God, we have come before You, our Lord. Through worship, please let us know God’s heart and guide us to serve You properly.

8 When the sun rose, God provided a scorching east wind, and the sun blazed on Jonah’s head so that he grew faint. He wanted to die, and said, “It would be better for me to die than to live.”
9 But God said to Jonah, “Is it right for you to be angry about the plant?”
“It is,” he said. “And I’m so angry I wish I were dead.”
10 But the LORD said, “You have been concerned about this plant, though you did not tend it or make it grow. It sprang up overnight and died overnight.
11 And should I not have concern for the great city of Nineveh, in which there are more than a hundred and twenty thousand people who cannot tell their right hand from their left—and also many animals?”

9 But God said to Jonah, “Do you do well to be angry for the plant?” And he said, “Yes, I do well to be angry, angry enough to die.”
10 And the LORD said, “You pity the plant, for which you did not labor, nor did you make it grow, which came into being in a night and perished in a night.
11 And should not I pity Nineveh, that great city, in which there are more than 120,000 persons who do not know their right hand from their left, and also much cattle?”
4. 본문 이해 (Understanding the Scripture)
요나는 자신이 싫어하는 사람들에게 하나님이 은혜 베푸시는 것을 좋아하지 않았어요. 그는 자신을 시원하게 해 주던 박 넝쿨이 사라지는 것은 아까워하면서, 니느웨 사람들이 구원받는 것은 싫어했어요. 그런 요나에게 하나님은 죄인들까지도 아끼시는 그분의 넓은 사랑을 깨우쳐 주셨어요.
Jonah did not like it when God showed grace to the people he disliked. While he was sad about the disappearance of the vine that gave him shade, he hated the fact that the people of Nineveh were saved. To such Jonah, God awakened him to His broad love that cares even for sinners.
■ 인도자를 위한 본문 이해 (Understanding Scripture for the Leader)
니느웨는 당시 이스라엘과 숙적 관계이던 앗수르 제국의 수도였습니다. 요나는 니느웨에 가서 하나님의 심판을 경고하라는 명령을 따르고 싶지 않았습니다. 니느웨가 그들의 죄악으로 멸망하길 바랐기 때문입니다. 요나는 하나님 명령을 거역하고, 하나님 얼굴을 피해 당시 세상의 끝이라 여겼던 다시스(사 66:19)로 배를 타고 도망갔습니다. 하나님은 불순종하는 요나에게 폭풍을 보내셨고, 그 일로 요나는 바다에 던져져 물고기 뱃속에 사흘 간 있다가 나옵니다. 이후 요나는 하나님 명령에 순종해 니느웨로 가서 사흘 동안 심판의 말씀을 전합니다. 니느웨 사람들이 회개하기를 바라거나 안타까운 마음으로 외치지는 않았을 겁니다. 그런데 니느웨 사람들이 요나의 경고를 받아들이고 회개하기 시작했습니다. 베옷을 입고 재를 뒤집어쓰고 금식하며 간절히 기도했습니다. 이에 하나님은 뜻을 돌이켜 그들을 향한 심판을 거두셨습니다. 요나는 이를 보고 매우 화를 냈습니다. 완고하게 투정 부리는 요나에게 하나님은 박 넝쿨을 준비해 그늘을 만들어 주셨고 요나는 크게 기뻐했습니다. 하지만 하룻밤 사이에 박 넝쿨은 하나님이 준비하신 벌레에게 갉아 먹히고 뜨거운 동풍에 말라 사라져 버렸습니다. 박 넝쿨이 없어지자 요나는 힘들어하며 죽기를 바랐습니다. 하나님은 요나의 자기중심적인 모습을 꾸짖으시며 12만 명이나 되는 니느웨 사람과 많은 가축을 사랑하시는 하나님의 마음을 깨닫게 하십니다. 우리도 요나처럼 자신의 안일함이나 인간적인 감정과 판단만을 중요하게 생각하며 하나님 마음을 외면하고 있지는 않은지 돌아보기를 바랍니다.
Nineveh was the capital of the Assyrian Empire, which was a sworn enemy of Israel at the time. Jonah did not want to follow the command to go to Nineveh and warn them of God’s judgment. It was because he wanted Nineveh to be destroyed due to their sins. Jonah disobeyed God’s command and ran away by boat to Tarshish (Isaiah 66:19), which was considered the end of the world at that time, to flee from God’s presence. God sent a storm to the disobedient Jonah, and as a result, Jonah was thrown into the sea and spent three days inside a fish before coming out. Afterward, Jonah obeyed God’s command and went to Nineveh, preaching the word of judgment for three days. He probably didn’t cry out with a pitying heart or hope for the people of Nineveh to repent. However, the people of Nineveh accepted Jonah’s warning and began to repent. They wore sackcloth, covered themselves in ashes, fasted, and prayed earnestly. At this, God relented and withdrew the judgment against them. Seeing this, Jonah became very angry. To the stubbornly complaining Jonah, God prepared a vine to give him shade, and Jonah was very happy. But overnight, the vine was eaten by a worm God had prepared, dried up in the hot east wind, and disappeared. When the vine was gone, Jonah suffered and wished to die. God rebuked Jonah’s self-centeredness and made him realize God’s heart that loves the 120,000 people of Nineveh and many animals. I hope we also look back on whether we, like Jonah, are ignoring God’s heart by placing importance only on our own comfort or human emotions and judgments.
“내가 그들 가운데에서 징조를 세워서 그들 가운데에서 도피한 자를 여러 나라 곧 다시스와 뿔과 활을 당기는 룻과 및 두발과 이완과 또 나의 명성을 듣지도 못하고 나의 영광을 보지도 못한 먼 섬들로 보내리니 그들이 나의 영광을 뭇 나라에 전파하리라”(사 66:19).
“I will set a sign among them, and I will send some of those who survive to the nations—to Tarshish, to the Libyans and Lydians (famous as archers), to Tubal and Greece, and to the distant islands that have not heard of my fame or seen my glory. They will proclaim my glory among the nations.” (Isaiah 66:19)

Discuss why Jonah cared for the vine. And talk about why God cared for and loved the people of Nineveh. Check the scale of the people and animals living in Nineveh together (Verse 11). And think about how much difference there is between the size of Jonah’s love for the vine and the size of God’s love for the people of Nineveh.

하나님이 니느웨를 향한 심판을 거두시자 요나는 화를 냈습니다. 이스라엘 민족을 괴롭히던 앗수르가 망하길 바랐기 때문입니다. 요나는 하나님의 구원과 사랑과 자비가 자기 민족과 자기만을 위한 것이라고 생각했습니다. 그래서 하나님의 마음을 외면한 채 자기중심적으로 판단했고 마음대로 행동했습니다. 박 넝쿨 같은 작은 식물을 아끼는 요나에게, 하나님은 좌우를 구분하지 못해 죄악 속에서 멸망할 수밖에 없는 니느웨 사람들을 향한 크신 긍휼과 사랑을 깨우쳐 주셨습니다.
Jonah became angry when God withdrew His judgment against Nineveh. It was because he wanted Assyria, which had tormented the people of Israel, to perish. Jonah thought that God’s salvation, love, and mercy were only for himself and his nation. So he ignored God’s heart, judged self-centeredly, and acted as he pleased. To Jonah, who cared for a small plant like a vine, God awakened His great compassion and love for the people of Nineveh, who could not tell their right hand from their left and were bound to perish in sin.

Is there someone I tried to distance myself from due to narrow-mindedness and prejudice, like Jonah? How would God look at that person?

자칫 우리는 내가 잘되고 내 가족이 잘되는 것만 생각할 수 있습니다. 이런 신앙은 자기중심적인 신앙입니다. 하나님이 나를 사랑하시는 것처럼 다른 사람도 극진히 사랑하신다는 것을 아이들이 기억하게 해 주십시오. 내 판단과 편견으로 다른 사람을 정죄하고 저주하지는 않았는지, 각자 자신의 언어생활과 마음가짐을 돌아보길 바랍니다. 요나서를 통해 깨닫게 된 하나님의 마음으로 내가 싫어하는 사람, 내가 미워하는 사람을 다시 볼 수 있도록 도와주십시오.
We can easily think only of ourselves and our family doing well. Such faith is a self-centered faith. Help the children remember that just as God loves me, He deeply loves others as well. I hope each of you reflects on your language habits and mindset to see if you have condemned or cursed others with your own judgment and prejudice. With the heart of God realized through the Book of Jonah, help them see again the people they dislike or hate.
6. 감사하기 (Gratitude)
하나님께 감사드리고 싶은 일을 세 가지 정도 기록하게 한 후에 함께 나눕니다. 일상에서 경험한 크고 작은 감사나 예배 중에 생각난 감사를 나누어도 되고, 평범한 일상을 누리게 하시는 은혜에 대한 감사를 나누어도 됩니다. 감사를 나눔으로 하나님 은혜를 기억하고 하나님 중심의 삶을 훈련하게 됩니다.
Write down about three things you want to thank God for and share them together. You can share big and small thanks experienced in daily life, thanks that came to mind during worship, or thanks for the grace of enjoying an ordinary daily life. By sharing gratitude, we remember God’s grace and practice living a God-centered life.
7. 기도 (Prayer)
하나님, 요나처럼 저희가 자기중심적으로 생각하는 일은 없는지 돌아봅니다. 저희의 좁은 마음이 아니라 하나님의 넓은 마음을 따르게 도와주세요. 그래서 싫어하거나 미워하는 사람조차 하나님의 마음으로 품을 수 있게 해 주세요.
God, we look back on whether we think self-centeredly like Jonah. Please help us to follow God’s broad heart, not our narrow hearts. So please let us embrace even the people we dislike or hate with God’s heart.
‘주님이 가르쳐 주신 기도’로 가정예배를 마칩니다.

8. 가족 미션 (Family Mission)
<박넝쿨 가리개 만들기>
* 준비물: 초록색 8절 도화지, 가위, 나무젓가락, 셀로판테이프, 연필, 박 넝쿨 사진
1. 박 넝쿨 사진을 보면서 어떻게 넝쿨 잎을 그릴지 생각해 봅니다.
2. 연필로 초록색 도화지에 최대한 크게 잎 모양을 그립니다.
3. 넝쿨 잎이 시작되는 부분을 가위로 길게 오리고 잎 모양도 오립니다.
4. 길게 오린 부분을 나무젓가락에 감싼 뒤 셀로판테이프로 고정시켜 손잡이처럼 만듭니다.
5. 밖으로 나가 넝쿨 잎을 써 보며 시원함과 따가움을 경험해 봅니다.
6. 박 넝쿨이 없어졌을 때 요나가 얼마나 속상했을지 이야기해 봅니다.
7. 박 넝쿨과 비교할 수 없을 만큼 우리를 사랑하시는 하나님의 마음도 나누어 봅니다. (‘박넝쿨’로 번역된 식물은 피마자 혹은 아주까리로 볼 수 있습니다. 우리나라 박 넝쿨로 검색하면 원하는 이미지를 못 찾을 수도 있습니다.)
우리가 하나님보다 더 아끼고 집착하는 것은 무엇인지 나누어 보길 바랍니다. 햇볕 좋은 날에 돗자리를 듣고 야외에 나가 활동하면 더 실감 나게 느낄 수 있을 겁니다.
<Making a Gourd Vine Shade Screen>
* Materials: Green drawing paper (1/8 size), scissors, wooden chopsticks, cellophane tape, pencil, picture of a vine
1. Looking at the picture of the vine, think about how to draw the vine leaf.
2. Using a pencil, draw the leaf shape as large as possible on the green drawing paper.
3. Use scissors to cut a long strip at the part where the vine leaf starts, and then cut out the leaf shape.
4. Wrap the long cut strip around the wooden chopstick and secure it with cellophane tape to make it like a handle.
5. Go outside, use the vine leaf, and experience the coolness and the stinging heat.
6. Talk about how upset Jonah must have been when the vine disappeared.
7. Also share about God’s heart, which loves us incomparably more than the vine.
(The plant translated as ‘vine’ can be seen as a castor oil plant. You might not find the image you want if you search for a Korean gourd vine.)
I hope you discuss what it is that we care about and obsess over more than God. It will feel more real if you take a mat and do this activity outdoors on a sunny day.
