12. On the day the LORD gave the Amorites over to Israel, Joshua said to the LORD in the presence of Israel: “O sun, stand still over Gibeon, O moon, over the Valley of Aijalon.”
13. So the sun stood still, and the moon stopped, till the nation avenged itself on its enemies, as it is written in the Book of Jashar. The sun stopped in the middle of the sky and delayed going down about a full day.
14. There has never been a day like it before or since, a day when the LORD listened to a man. Surely the LORD was fighting for Israel!

Joshua fought against the Amorite alliance to honor the covenant made in God’s name. God was with Israel and answered Joshua’s extraordinary prayer. At Joshua’s command, the sun and moon stood still, allowing Israel to completely defeat the Amorite army. Even the sun and moon are under the power of the Creator God, who controls all of creation.

When the Canaanites heard that Israel had entered the land and taken cities, fear spread among them. The Gibeonites cleverly made a treaty with Israel, pretending to be from a distant land. Adoni-Zedek, the king of Jerusalem, was alarmed when he learned that Gibeon, a powerful city, had made peace with Israel. This meant that Israel was no longer a small or weak opponent. In response, Adoni-Zedek gathered four neighboring kings to form an Amorite alliance and attack Gibeon (Joshua 10:1–5).
When the Gibeonites called for help, Joshua honored the covenant made in God’s name and came to their aid, even though it had been formed through deceit. God encouraged Joshua not to fear, promising to deliver the Amorite kings into his hands (10:8). Joshua, trusting in God’s word, marched all night and attacked suddenly. God intervened with a miraculous hailstorm that struck down many of the enemy soldiers (10:11), showing that the battle was truly the Lord’s.
Then came an even greater miracle. Joshua prayed boldly for the sun and moon to stop, and God granted his request. The sun stood still until Israel achieved total victory. This event demonstrated that the Creator of the universe commands even celestial bodies to fulfill His will. God revealed His sovereign power over heaven and earth for the sake of His covenant people.
This passage reminds us that God’s power is limitless and that He acts on behalf of those who trust and obey Him. Just as He fought for Israel, He continues to fight for His people today.

1. Now Adoni-Zedek king of Jerusalem heard that Joshua had taken Ai and totally destroyed it, doing to Ai and its king as he had done to Jericho and its king, and that the people of Gibeon had made a treaty of peace with Israel and were living near them.
2. He and his people were very much alarmed at this, because Gibeon was an important city, like one of the royal cities; it was larger than Ai, and all its men were good fighters.
3. So Adoni-Zedek king of Jerusalem appealed to Hoham king of Hebron, Piram king of Jarmuth, Japhia king of Lachish and Debir king of Eglon.
4. “Come up and help me attack Gibeon,” he said, “because it has made peace with Joshua and the Israelites.”
5. Then the five kings of the Amorites–the kings of Jerusalem, Hebron, Jarmuth, Lachish and Eglon–joined forces. They moved up with all their troops and took up positions against Gibeon and attacked it. (Joshua 10:1-5)

8. The LORD said to Joshua, “Do not be afraid of them; I have given them into your hand. Not one of them will be able to withstand you.” (Joshua 10:8)

11. As they fled before Israel on the road down from Beth Horon to Azekah, the LORD hurled large hailstones down on them from the sky, and more of them died from the hailstones than were killed by the swords of the Israelites. (Joshua 10:11)

Joshua trusted God’s promise of victory and boldly fought against the Canaanite alliance. When time seemed too short to complete the battle, Joshua prayed for the sun and moon to stand still — a prayer of deep faith. The Creator God, who governs the movement of heaven and earth, alone has power to stop the sun and moon. Scripture records that this was a unique event in history when God listened to such a prayer (Joshua 10:14). God’s response made it clear that He was with Israel and fought on their behalf. Until the battle was won, the Israelites witnessed God’s power and praised Him for the victory that came through obedience and faith.

The same God who fought for Israel fights for us today. God takes full responsibility for those He calls His children. As the sovereign Lord of all creation, He transcends science and human understanding, knowing every situation and need we face. He protects us in both extraordinary miracles and in ordinary, everyday ways—keeping us safe from harm, guiding us through uncertainty, and giving peace in times of fear. Every moment of safety and calm we enjoy is a gift of His constant care. Encourage the group to thank God for His daily protection and remember that His presence is our greatest security.

<Confessing Our Faith>
Preparations: Full text of the New Apostles’ Creed, A4 drawing paper, writing tools, and decorating materials.
1. Read the New Apostles’ Creed aloud together as a family.
2. On an A4 sheet, write the entire Creed beginning each section with the phrase: “I believe in __________.”
3. If children are young, parents may write the words while children decorate the paper.
4. If children are in upper elementary grades or older, each family member can write their own personal copy on separate sheets.
5. Display the written creed in a visible place in your home.
6. Once a day—either in the morning or after dinner—gather together and read your family’s confession of faith aloud.
By repeating the phrase “I believe in…”, each family member will be reminded of the essence of our faith and who God truly is. Try practicing this mission together for a week—or even for 21 days—and watch how your shared faith deepens as a family.
