Caleb worked diligently to take possession of the land allotted to him. He proclaimed that whoever conquered Kiriath Sepher would receive his daughter Achsah as a wife, and Othniel (Caleb’s nephew) courageously captured the city and married her. Achsah then boldly asked her father for springs of water, and Caleb granted her request.

Even at the age of 85, Caleb remained determined to claim the land given to him. He attacked Hebron and drove out the Anakites—Sheshai, Ahiman, and Talmai, the descendants of Anak. When the twelve spies had first explored the land, ten of them reported with fear after seeing the Anak people (Num. 13:33), discouraging Israel and weakening their faith in God’s promise. But Caleb urged the people not to be afraid (Num. 14:9). His faith remained strong even decades later, and he successfully removed the Anakites from Hebron.
Caleb then sought to further secure his inheritance, promising his daughter in marriage to whoever captured Kiriath Sepher. In ancient Near Eastern tradition, it was common for kings or commanders to give their daughters to victorious warriors (1 Sam. 17:25). Othniel, later known as Israel’s first judge (Judg. 3:9), courageously conquered the city and married Achsah.
When Caleb gave them land as a wedding gift, Achsah went a step further. Knowing that the land required water for farming, she boldly asked her father for springs. Caleb graciously granted her request and gave her both the upper and lower springs. Through this account, we see not only Caleb, but also Othniel and Achsah as people of faith, courage, and initiative.

Othniel heard Caleb’s promise and boldly went to conquer Kiriath-Sepher. Kiriath-Sepher (Debir) means “city of scribes” or “city of books,” indicating that it was a fortified and intellectually strong city. After winning the battle, Othniel married Caleb’s daughter, as promised.
Achsah, Caleb’s daughter, also showed courage — she not only received land as her wedding gift, but also boldly asked her father for springs of water that were necessary for farming in the land. Caleb gladly gave her both the upper springs and the lower springs, blessing her household.
The land in the Negev (south) that Caleb gave Othniel and Achsah was dry. If Achsah had not asked, she would not have received the water she needed. Like Othniel, the one who acts in faith with courage, and like Achsah, the one who boldly asks, receives blessing.

As children of God, we can do all things within His will. We can also speak our desires to our Father through prayer. Othniel and Achsah were people of faith just like Caleb. Caleb became a model of faith not only among the tribe of Judah, but also for his own family. Othniel later became the first judge of Israel, and Achsah asked boldly for what she needed — and received it.
Both Othniel and Achsah lived actively and courageously, seizing opportunities rather than remaining passive. God delights in giving good gifts to those who ask and seek Him in faith. Remember also the Scripture that says “the Kingdom of Heaven belongs to those who take hold of it” (Matthew 11:12).
Through the figures in this passage, let each person be challenged — instead of living passively, choose an active and courageous life. Encourage one another to attempt something new and pursue it with faith.
“세례 요한의 때부터 지금까지 천국은 침노를 당하나니 침노하는 자는 빼앗느니라”(마 11:12).

<Make a Garland!>
Bucket List (Hope List) Garland
Preparations: Colored paper (red & green), star-shaped template, scissors, a hole punch or awl, twine or thin string, and pens
1. Before the year ends, share together what each person wants to accomplish.
2. Decide how many bucket list items (hopes) each person wants to set. Draw star shapes on red and green paper.
3. Cut out the stars and write one bucket list (hope) item inside each one.
4. Punch a hole at the top of each star, then string them together — red star, green star, repeating — to form a garland.
5. Hang the finished garland in a visible place using tape or hooks.
6. Throughout the month, look at one another’s bucket lists and encourage each other to challenge, try, and achieve them before the year closes.
A garland is a decorative string of fabric or paper pieces hung together to brighten a space. A red and green star garland can also become a beautiful Christmas decoration. As you check each other’s hopes and encourage one another to act on them, may it become a time to dream, attempt, and pursue like Othniel and Achsah — with courage and faith.
