4. 본문 이해 (Understanding the Scripture)
베드로는 하나님이 우리에게 베푸신 크고 특별한 은혜를 찬양해요. 긍휼이 많으신 하나님이 우리를 구원하시고 우리에게 ‘산 소망’을 주셨기 때문이에요. 십자가에서 죽으신 예수님을 다시 살리신 하나님은, 예수님을 믿고 하나님 자녀가 된 우리에게 썩지 않고 낡지 않는 하늘 유업을 선물해 주셨어요.
Peter praises God’s great and special favor to us because our compassionate God has saved us and given us a “living hope.” The same God who raised Jesus, who died on the cross, from the dead has given us an incorruptible, unfading, heavenly inheritance for those who believe in Jesus and become God’s children.
■ 인도자를 위한 본문 이해 (Understanding Scripture for the Leader)
베드로전․후서는 베드로가 소아시아 지역에 흩어져 살던 성도들에게 쓴 편지예요. 당시 성도들은 로마 네로 황제의 본격적인 박해(주후 64년) 때문에 언제든지 삶의 터전을 버리고 피신해야 하는 나그네와 같은 삶을 살고 있었어요. 베드로는 비록 고통스러운 세상을 살고 있지만 성도는 이 세상에 속하지 않으며 약속된 영원한 기업을 보장받은 천국 시민이라는 정체성을 확인해 주려고 했어요. 그래서 박해 속에서 힘들게 살고 있는 성도들에게 그들이 하나님 앞에 얼마나 귀하고 소중한 존재인지 알려 주고, 믿음을 굳건히 하도록 용기를 주고 있어요. 베드로는 편지 서두인 본문에서 성도가 가진 특권이 얼마나 대단한지 설명해요. 그 특권은 죄인 된 우리가 하나님의 긍휼하심을 입어 거듭나게 되었고, 예수 그리스도의 부활을 통해 산 소망을 얻게 되었다는 거예요. 여기서 ‘산 소망’은 힘겨운 현실 속에서도 여전히 살아갈 힘과 용기를 주는 소망을 의미해요. 그 소망의 근거는 하늘에 예비해 두신 썩지 않고 사라지지 않을 영원한 천국이에요. 만약 이 세상이 전부라면 우리의 믿음 생활은 참으로 허무하고 헛된 것이 될 거예요. 바울도 이 세상의 것이 전부라면 우리 믿음이 헛되다고 말해요(고전 15:17, 19). 이 세상의 삶을 나그네의 삶으로 바라보고 영원한 천국 시민으로서 정체성을 기억하며 살아간다면 소망의 이유(벧전 3:15)에 대해 분명하게 말할 수 있을 거예요.
1 and 2 Peter are Peter’s letters to the Christians who were scattered throughout Asia Minor. At that time, the Christians were living a life of wanderlust, having to abandon their homes and flee at any time due to the extreme persecution of the Roman Emperor Nero (AD 64). Peter wanted to affirm their identity as citizens of heaven, who are not of this world but are guaranteed a promised eternal inheritance, even though they are living in a world of suffering, so he wanted to let them know how precious and valuable they are to God and encourage them to stand firm in their faith. In the opening paragraphs of his letter, Peter explains the privilege of being a believer: that as sinners, we have been born again through God’s compassion, and through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, we have a living hope, and by “living hope,” he means a hope that gives us strength and courage to continue living in the midst of difficult realities. The basis of that hope is an incorruptible, unfading, and eternal kingdom in heaven. If this world is all there is, then our life of faith will be truly hollow and vain. Paul says that if this world is all there is, then our faith is vain (1 Corinthians 15:17, 19). If we look at life in this world as a traveler’s life and remember our identity as eternal citizens of heaven, we can speak clearly about the reason for our hope (1 Peter 3:15).
“그리스도께서 다시 살아나신 일이 없으면 너희의 믿음도 헛되고 너희가 여전히 죄 가운데 있을 것이요”(고전 15:17).
And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins. (1 Corinthians 15:17, NIV)
“만일 그리스도 안에서 우리가 바라는 것이 다만 이 세상의 삶뿐이면 모든 사람 가운데 우리가 더욱 불쌍한 자이리라”(고전 15:19).
If only for this life we have hope in Christ, we are to be pitied more than all men. (1 Corinthians 15:19, NIV)
“너희 마음에 그리스도를 주로 삼아 거룩하게 하고 너희 속에 있는 소망에 관한 이유를 묻는 자에게는 대답할 것을 항상 준비하되 온유와 두려움으로 하고”(벧전 3:15).
But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect, (1 Peter 3:15, NIV)

After Peter proclaims his praise to God the Father, he goes on to describe the many privileges that have been given to us by God’s compassionate grace. Read verses 3 and 4 carefully, and discuss the specific privileges that have been given to you.

베드로는 박해받는 상황에서 어렵고 힘들게 믿음 생활을 하는 성도들에게 그들이 붙잡고 있는 믿음이 결코 헛된 것이 아님을 분명하게 말해요. 하나님의 긍휼하심을 입어 거듭나게 된 것, 예수 그리스도의 부활을 통해 우리에게 주어진 산 소망, 그리고 나그네 된 우리가 지향하며 살아야 할 영원한 기업이 주어졌음을 성도들이 알길 원했어요.
Peter wants the believers to know that the faith they hold is not in vain, that they have been born again by God’s mercy, that we have been given a new birth, a new life through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, and an eternal inheritance to which we, as travelers, should aspire.

Despite the different stories we tell about ourselves, we need to remember that our identity as “children of God” is final and eternal. We strive to fit the mold of what the world wants us to be, but we need to remember that it is not everything. Parents do their best at work, and children study hard, but in the end, our final destination is the eternal kingdom of God.

하나님의 크신 긍휼하심을 입어 거듭나게 하시고, 하늘의 산 소망을 가지고 살아가게 하심을 감사드리세요.
Thank God for His great compassion, for making you born again, and for giving you the living hope of heaven.

긍휼이 풍성하신 하나님, 저희에게 예수님을 보내 주시고 영원한 ‘산 소망’을 갖게 해 주셔서 감사해요. 괴롭고 힘든 일이 생길 때마다 하늘 유업과 상을 생각하고 선으로 악을 이기며 담대히 믿음으로 살아가게 해 주세요.
God, rich in compassion, thank you for sending Jesus to us and for giving us an eternal “living hope.” Whenever we are troubled and struggling, let us remember Your inheritance and awards, overcome the evil, and live boldly in faith.
