4. 본문 이해 (Understanding the Scripture)
예수님은 제자들에게 참된 복에 대해 가르쳐 주셨어요. 마음의 가난, 애통(슬픔), 온유, 의에 굶주림, 긍휼(자비), 마음의 청결, 화평하게 함, 의를 위해 박해받음 등은 세상에서 말하는 복의 기준과는 매우 달라요. 예수님이 말씀하신 복은 천국을 소망하는 사람이 이 땅에서 추구할 삶의 방식이에요.
Jesus taught His disciples about true blessing. Poverty of spirit, mourning, meekness, hunger and thirst for righteousness, mercy, purity of heart, peacemaking, and being persecuted for righteousness are very different from what the world considers to be blessings. The blessings Jesus spoke of describe a way of life that those who hope for the kingdom of heaven are to pursue while living in this world.

메시아로서 공생애를 시작하신 예수님은 하나님 나라의 복음을 선포하시며 병들고 약한 사람들을 고쳐 주셨습니다요. 어느 날 산에 오르신 예수님은 사람들에게 긴 말씀을 전하셨습니다(5~7장). 이를 산에서 가르쳐 주신 말씀이라는 의미로 ‘산상수훈’이라고 합니다. 팔복(八福, 여덟 가지 복)에 해당하는 본문은 하나님 나라에서 복 있는 사람을 소개합니다. 심령이 가난한 사람, 애통하는 사람, 온유한 사람, 의에 주리고 목마른 사람은 복이 있습니다. 그들은 하나님을 의지하기에 하나님이 베푸시는 은혜를 누릴 수 있습니다. 그리고 긍휼히 여기는 사람, 마음이 정직한 사람, 화평하게 하는 사람, 올바르게 살기 위해 온갖 고난을 견디는 사람도 복이 있습니다. 그들은 자신이 행동한 대로 하나님의 위로와 상을 받게 될 것입니다. 예수님은 율법만 지키면 하나님 백성으로서 의무를 다했다고 여기던 당시 사람들에게 하나님이 다스리는 나라의 가치와 기준이 무엇인지, 하나님 백성은 어떻게 살아야 하는지 분명하게 가르쳐 주셨습니다. 이 말씀은 오늘날 형식적인 믿음 생활에만 충실하면 좋은 신앙인이 된 것처럼 착각하는 우리에게도 하나님 나라 백성으로서 무엇을 위해 어떻게 살아야 하는지 교훈합니다.
Jesus, who began His public ministry as the Messiah, proclaimed the gospel of the kingdom of God and healed the sick and the weak. One day, He went up on a mountain and delivered an extended teaching to the people (chapters 5–7). This teaching is known as the Sermon on the Mount, meaning “the teaching given on the mountain.” The passage commonly called the Beatitudes (the eight blessings) introduces who is truly blessed in the kingdom of God.
Those who are poor in spirit, those who mourn, the meek, and those who hunger and thirst for righteousness are blessed, because they depend on God and therefore receive the grace He gives. Likewise, those who are merciful, pure in heart, peacemakers, and those who endure suffering for the sake of righteousness are also blessed. They will receive God’s comfort and reward according to their deeds.
Through this teaching, Jesus clearly explained to people of His time—who believed that merely keeping the Law meant they had fulfilled their duty as God’s people—what the values and standards of God’s kingdom truly are, and how God’s people are meant to live. This message also instructs us today, who may mistakenly think that outward or formal religious life alone makes us faithful believers, showing us what it truly means to live as citizens of God’s kingdom and what kind of life we are called to pursue.

The people Jesus called “blessed” are not those who hold high positions, are physically strong, highly educated, or wealthy. The people Jesus described as truly blessed are those who are poor in spirit before God and depend on Him alone, those who grieve and ache with God’s heart as they look at the world, those who choose what pleases God and live rightly even in difficulty, those who show mercy to others, and those who are gentle and humble.
Through these blessings, Jesus taught us how citizens of the kingdom of God are meant to live. This is a time for reflection: What kind of “blessing” do we usually seek in our daily lives? Are we chasing worldly success and recognition as the world defines blessing? May this be an opportunity to rediscover what true blessing is for God’s children, and to reflect again on the kind of life and posture of faith we are called to pursue.

Talk together about what kind of blessing God’s children should remember and how we can live a life that reflects those blessings. For example, if you want to become a peacemaker, think about how you can help bring reconciliation in situations of conflict or disagreement, or how you should treat someone who has wronged you. Discuss how you can act and what kind of attitude you should have at school, kindergarten, or in your own specific situations. We may not be perfect, but encourage one another to remember at least one of the blessings Jesus spoke about each day and to live it out in daily life.
6. 감사하기 (Gratitude)
하나님께 감사드리고 싶은 일을 세 가지 정도 기록하게 한 후에 함께 나눕니다. 일상에서 경험한 크고 작은 감사나 예배 중에 생각난 감사를 나누어도 되고, 평범한 일상을 누리게 하시는 은혜에 대한 감사를 나누어도 됩니다. 감사를 나눔으로 하나님 은혜를 기억하고 하나님 중심의 삶을 훈련하게 됩니다.
Have each person write down about three things they would like to thank God for, and then share them together. These can be big or small moments of gratitude from everyday life, or thanksgivings that came to mind during worship, including gratitude for the grace that allows us to enjoy ordinary daily life. By sharing gratitude, we remember God’s grace and practice living a God-centered life.
7. 기도 (Prayer)
하나님, 저희가 세상 사람들이 구하는 복이 아니라 예수님이 말씀하신 복을 구하길 원합니다. 주님이 기뻐하실 마음으로 날마다 주님의 말씀에 순종하게 해 주세요. 그래서 하늘의 복을 누리며 사는 가족이 되게 해 주세요.
God, we want to seek not the blessings the world pursues, but the blessings Jesus spoke about. Help us to obey Your Word each day with hearts that delight You. May our family live while enjoying the blessings of heaven.

“Making Picture Cards”
<Making the Beatitudes Cards>
Preparations: 9 postcard-sized cards, coloring supplies, writing utensils, a hole punch, an O-ring
1. Illustrate each of the Beatitudes on the cards using pictures.
2. On the back of each card, write the corresponding Beatitude in simple, easy-to-understand words.
3. Punch a hole on the side that will be easiest to flip through, then bind the cards together with an O-ring.
4. Place a blank card at the very front and decorate it nicely as the cover.
Use words that are as simple as possible so children can understand the meaning of the Beatitudes. By thinking together about easy expressions and drawing pictures, children can more clearly imagine what a truly blessed person is like. You can also turn this into a game by looking only at the pictures and guessing which Beatitude each card represents.
