1-3. 예수님을 소개하는 사람

세례 요한은 예수님보다 6개월 일찍 태어났고, 예수님이 공생애를 시작하시기 전에 이스라엘 백성을 향해 하나님의 말씀을 선포한 선지자입니다. 구약성경에 나오는 마지막 선지자인 말라기 이후 400년 동안 이스라엘에는 하나님의 선지자가 없었습니다. 세례 요한은 마치 엘리야와 같은 모습으로 나타나(왕하 1:8) 금욕적인 생활과 권세 있는 메시지로 백성의 이목을 사로잡았습니다. 대단한 선지자가 나타났다는 소문이 퍼져 수많은 사람이 세례 요한을 찾아왔습니다. 세례 요한은 그들을 향해 “회개하라, 천국이 가까이 왔다!”라고 선포했습니다. 그의 회개 촉구는 예수님을 받아들일 수 있도록 돕는 역할을 했습니다. 즉 예수님을 통해 베푸실 하나님의 구원으로 초대하는 것이었습니다. 세례 요한은 구약과 신약을 연결해 주는 선지자라 할 수 있습니다. 그는 예수님을 소개하는 자신의 임무를 충실하고 겸손하게 감당했습니다. 사람들이 자신을 그리스도로 오해하지 않도록 자신은 광야에서 외치는 소리에 불과하다고 말했습니다(요 1:19~23). 자신은 예수님의 신발 끈을 푸는 일도 감당하지 못할 사람이라고 자신을 낮추며(눅 3:16) 오직 예수님만 높여 드렸습니다.

John the Baptist was born about six months before Jesus and was the prophet who proclaimed God’s word to the people of Israel before Jesus began His public ministry. For 400 years after the prophet Malachi, there had been no prophet sent by God to Israel. John the Baptist appeared in a manner similar to Elijah (2 Kings 1:8), capturing people’s attention through his ascetic lifestyle and powerful message.

As news spread that a great prophet had appeared, many people came to see John the Baptist. To them he proclaimed, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near!” His call to repentance prepared people to receive Jesus. In other words, it was an invitation to God’s salvation that would be accomplished through Jesus.

John the Baptist can be described as the prophet who connects the Old Testament and the New Testament. He faithfully and humbly fulfilled his mission of introducing Jesus. To prevent people from mistaking him for the Messiah, he said that he was merely “the voice of one calling in the wilderness” (John 1:19–23). He humbled himself, saying that he was not even worthy to untie the straps of Jesus’ sandals (Luke 3:16), and exalted only Jesus.

“그들이 그에게 대답하되 그는 털이 많은 사람인데 허리에 가죽띠를 띠었더이다 하니 왕이 이르되 그는 디셉 사람 엘리야로다”(왕하 1:8).
8. They replied, “He was a man with a garment of hair and with a leather belt around his waist.” The king said, “That was Elijah the Tishbite.” (2 Kings 1:8)

“유대인들이 예루살렘에서 제사장들과 레위인들을 요한에게 보내어 네가 누구냐 물을 때에 요한의 증언이 이러하니라 요한이 드러내어 말하고 숨기지 아니하니 드러내어 하는 말이 나는 그리스도가 아니라 한대 또 묻되 그러면 누구냐 네가 엘리야냐 이르되 나는 아니라 또 묻되 네가 그 선지자냐 대답하되 아니라 또 말하되 누구냐 우리를 보낸 이들에게 대답하게 하라 너는 네게 대하여 무엇이라 하느냐
이르되 나는 선지자 이사야의 말과 같이 주의 길을 곧게 하라고 광야에서 외치는 자의 소리로라 하니라”(요 1:19~23).
19. Now this was John’s testimony when the Jews of Jerusalem sent priests and Levites to ask him who he was.
20. He did not fail to confess, but confessed freely, “I am not the Christ.”
21. They asked him, “Then who are you? Are you Elijah?” He said, “I am not.” “Are you the Prophet?” He answered, “No.”
22. Finally they said, “Who are you? Give us an answer to take back to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?”
23. John replied in the words of Isaiah the prophet, “I am the voice of one calling in the desert, ‘Make straight the way for the Lord.’ ” (John 1:19-23)

“요한이 모든 사람에게 대답하여 이르되 나는 물로 너희에게 세례를 베풀거니와 나보다 능력이 많으신 이가 오시나니 나는 그의 신발끈을 풀기도 감당하지 못하겠노라 그는 성령과 불로 너희에게 세례를 베푸실 것이요”(눅 3:16).
16. John answered them all, “I baptize you with water. But one more powerful than I will come, the thongs of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire. (Luke 3:16)
