God, we come before you as a family with our hearts united. Enlighten us to Your good will, our Creator, and help us to respond in obedience.

4. 본문 이해 (Understanding the Scripture)
이스라엘의 죄가 오랫동안 지속되자, 하나님은 인내를 그치시고 그들의 죄를 벌하기로 하셨어요. 심판 경고를 들은 이스라엘은 스스로를 위해 공의를 심고 인애(사랑)의 열매를 거두어야 해요. 하나님을 찾고, 묵은땅을 갈아엎듯 마음을 새롭게 하고 죄악을 버리면 구원의 은혜를 경험할 거예요.
After Israel’s sins persisted for so long, God became impatient and decided to punish them. After hearing the warning of judgment, Israel must sow justice for themselves and reap the fruits of mercy (love). Seek God, renew your heart like a broken record, and forsake your sins, and you will experience the grace of salvation.
■ 인도자를 위한 본문 이해 (Understanding Scripture for the Leader)
호세아가 활동했던 시대에 북 이스라엘의 왕은 여로보암 2세였어요. 그는 북 이스라엘에서 41년 동안 다스렸어요. 그가 통치하던 시기에 북 이스라엘은 국력이 커져서 주변 나라에 큰 영향력을 미치고 영토도 확장되어 번영을 누렸어요(왕하 14:25). 경제적인 풍요와 정치적인 안정을 누리던 북 이스라엘은 하나님을 잊어버렸어요. 풍요로운 소유물로 멋지고 화려한 예배를 드렸지만, 그곳에 하나님을 향한 경외심은 없었어요. 제사장들도 마찬가지였어요. 하나님의 말씀을 제대로 연구하지 않았고, 백성을 어떻게 가르쳐야 할지도 몰랐어요. 그들은 그저 백성이 바치는 제물로 자기 이익을 취하기에 바빴어요. 이스라엘 백성에게 하나님은 과거에 조상들을 인도했던 광야의 신 정도일 뿐, 지금 그들에게 지금 필요한 신은 농사가 잘되도록 비와 폭풍우를 내려 주는 바알이었어요. 그래서 하나님께는 형식적인 예배를 드리고, 바알을 더 중요한 신으로 여기며 섬겼어요. 백성은 이처럼 영적으로 타락했고, 도덕적으로도 무감각해져서 이웃에게 불의를 행했어요. 가난한 사람들을 억압하고 착취하며, 자기의 이익을 위해서라면 다른 이들의 아픔이나 상처는 아랑곳하지 않았지요. 하나님은 이러한 백성을 향해 심판을 예고하셨어요. 호세아는 죄에 찌든 백성의 모습을 묵은땅에 비유하며 새롭게 갈아엎으라고 외쳐요. 그들이 바르게 살고자 한다면 하나님이 은혜와 사랑을 베푸실 것이며, 하나님께 돌아와 그분을 찾기만 한다면 하나님이 당장이라도 그들에게 공의를 베푸실 거라고 말해요.
During Hosea’s time, the king of northern Israel was Jeroboam II. He reigned in northern Israel for 41 years. During his reign, northern Israel grew in power, became influential in neighboring countries, expanded its territory, and prospered (2 Kings 14:25). In their economic prosperity and political stability, Northern Israel forgot about God. They had great possessions and fancy worship services, but there was no reverence for God. The priests were the same way: they hadn’t studied God’s Word and didn’t know how to teach the people. To the Israelites, God was just a wilderness god who had led their ancestors in the past, but the god they needed now was Baal, the god who brought rain and storms to help them farm. The people became spiritually corrupt, morally numb, and unjust to their neighbors, oppressing and exploiting the poor, and disregarding the pain and suffering of others for their own gain. Hosea compares the sinful state of the people to the old earth and calls for renewal. He tells them that God will show them grace and love if they want to live right and that God will give them justice right away if they return to Him and seek Him.
“이스라엘의 하나님 여호와께서 그의 종 가드헤벨 아밋대의 아들 선지자 요나를 통하여 하신 말씀과 같이 여로보암이 이스라엘 영토를 회복하되 하맛 어귀에서부터 아라바 바다까지 하였으니”(왕하 14:25).

1. 하나님은 이스라엘 백성에게 “묵은땅을 기경하라(갈아라).”라고 말씀하셨어요. ‘묵은땅’은 무엇을 비유한 것일까요?(12절)
God told the Israelites, “Cultivate (plow) the fallow ground.” What does “fallow ground” refer to? (v. 12)

묵은땅은 오랫동안 경작하지 않고 그대로 둔 땅을 말해요. 오랫동안 경작하지 않았기에 잡초와 가시나무와 돌멩이가 많을 수 있어요. 묵은땅에 씨앗을 심고 자라게 하려면, 밭을 갈아엎어야 해요. 본문에 나오는 묵은땅은 오랫동안 회개하지 않은 마음을 가리켜요. 이러한 마음에는 죄악이 뿌리를 내리고 있어요. 하나님은 죄로 물든 마음 밭을 갈아엎고 공의와 사랑을 심고 그 열매를 거두어야 한다고 말씀하세요. 임박한 심판을 알지 못한 채 죄에 빠져 있는 백성을 향해 하나님은 그분께 돌아온다면 심판을 피할 수 있음을 알려 주세요.
Fallow ground is land that has been left untilled for a long time. Because it hasn’t been tilled for a long time, it may have many weeds, thorns, and stones. To plant seeds in fallow ground and make it grow, the field must be plowed. The fallow ground in this passage refers to hearts that have been unrepentant for a long time. Sin has taken root in these hearts. God says that the sin-stained field of the heart must be plowed, and justice and love must be planted and the fruit reaped. For the people who are mired in sin, unaware of the impending judgment, let them know that God offers them escape from judgment if they return to Him.
▒ 인도자를 위한 해설 (Commentary for the Leader)
과거 기브아 시대부터 지금까지 이스라엘의 죄악이 오랫동안 지속되었어요. 죄에 익숙해진 백성의 마음은 묵은땅과 같았어요. 하나님이 오래 참으시며 심판을 보류하셨지만, 이제는 원하시는 때에 징계하실 거예요. 그러니 돌이켜 하나님의 백성답게 올바르게 살아야 해요. 그래야 하나님의 긍휼과 은혜를 입을 수 있어요. 바로 지금 하나님을 찾고, 묵은땅을 갈아엎듯 자신의 죄악을 버려야 해요. 그러면 소낙비처럼 내리는 구원 은혜를 경험할 거예요. 하나님을 찾고 회개해야 하는 가장 좋은 시간은 바로 ‘지금’이에요. 하나님을 찾고 하나님 백성답게 바르게 사는 길로 돌이키는 것만이 그들이 살 길이에요.
Israel’s sinfulness has been going on for a long time, from the time of Gibeah to now, and the hearts of the people who have become accustomed to sin have become like a barren land. God has been patient and withheld judgment for a long time, but now he will discipline them when he wants to. So we must turn around and live rightly as God’s people so that we can receive God’s compassion and grace. The best time to seek God and repent is now, and only by seeking God and returning to the right way of living as God’s people will they be able to receive God’s mercy and grace.

하나님의 말씀보다 내가 편한 것이나 내가 좋아하는 것을 따라 살다 보면 나도 모르게 나쁜 습관이 생길 수 있어요. 나쁜 습관은 죄를 짓게 하는 지름길과 같아요. 오래 방치하지 않도록 미리 나쁜 습관을 버려야 해요. 오래된 습관일수록 고치기 어렵기 때문이지요.
If I follow what I’m comfortable with or what I like rather than what God says, I can develop bad habits without realizing it. Bad habits are like a shortcut to sin. I need to break bad habits early so that I don’t let them linger, because the older the habit, the harder it is to break.

이스라엘 백성은 하나님의 율법을 잊어버린 지 오래되었고, 죄를 지으며 하나님과 상관없는 삶을 살았어요. 하나님을 기억하지 못하고 원래부터 바알을 섬겼던 것처럼 바알에게 절하고 제물을 바치며 살았어요. 바알이 그들에게 먹을 것을 주고 풍족하게 살게 해 준다고 믿었지요. 이러한 백성에게 하나님은 여전히 기회를 주셨어요. 어서 돌아와 하나님을 찾으라고 말씀하셨어요. 지금까지 살아온 삶에서 벗어나기가 쉽지 않지만, 묵은땅을 갈아엎듯 죄로 찌든 모습을 과감히 버리고 하나님의 백성답게 살아가야 해요. 우리도 하나님을 잊어버리고 내 마음대로 내 생각대로 사는 것이 익숙해지면 습관처럼 죄를 짓게 돼요. 나에게 있는 죄 된 모습이나 죄를 짓게 하는 나쁜 습관을 찾아보고 빨리 없애려고 노력해야 해요.
The people of Israel had long since forgotten God’s law, sinned, and lived a life that had nothing to do with God. They had forgotten God and went back to bowing down to Baal and making sacrifices to him, just as they had always done. They believed that he would give them food and make them live in abundance. God still gave them a chance. He told them to come back and find God. It’s not easy to get away from the way we’ve been living, but we have to tear up our sinful ways and live like God’s people. When we forget about God and get used to living our own way and doing our own thing, we sin out of habit. We need to look for our sinful ways and bad habits that cause us to sin and try to get rid of them quickly.

잘못된 죄의 습관을 버리고 올바른 길로 인도해 주시는 하나님께 감사드리세요.
Break the wrong sinful habits and thank God for leading you to the right path.
7. 기도 (Prayer)
하나님, 죄로 향하는 저희의 마음이 변화되기를 원합니다. 하나님이 싫어하시는 죄의 습관을 버릴 수 있게 도와주세요. 하나님이 기뻐하시는 의와 사랑을 심고 그 열매를 맺으며, 하나님과 즐거이 연합하는 저희 가족이 되게 해 주세요.
Dear God, we want to change my heart toward sin. Help us to break the habits of sin that you hate. Help us to plant and bear the fruit of righteousness and love that you delight in, so that we can be a family in joyful union with you.

화분을 정리해요
“오래된 화분 정리하기”
* 준비물: 오래된 화분이나 빈 화분, 모종삽, 장갑, 쓰레기봉투, 흙, 거름
1. 가정에 방치된 화분이나 빈 화분을 준비합니다.
2. 오래된 화분에 있는 죽은 식물을 꺼냅니다.
3. 흙과 거름을 잘 섞어 화분에 담은 후 적당한 곳에 보관합니다.
화분 속의 죽은 식물을 뽑아 버리고 내년에 새로운 식물이나 씨앗을 심을 수 있도록 식물이 잘 자랄 환경을 만들어 주세요. 새로운 식물이나 씨앗을 심기 위해 흙을 뒤집고 거름도 줘 보세요. 내년 봄에 어떤 식물을 심을지 함께 이야기해 보세요. 묵은땅을 기경하는 것에 대한 이해를 도울 수 있을 거예요.
Organize Pots
“Clean Out Old Pots”
* Preparations: old or empty pots, gardening shovel, gloves, trash bags, soil, and manure
1. Have an unattended plant or empty pot at home.
2. Remove dead plants from old pots.
3. Mix the soil and manure well, pot it up, and store it in a suitable place.
Pull out dead plants in pots and make sure your plants have a good environment to thrive so that you can plant new plants or seeds next year. Turn the soil over and give it some manure so that you can plant new plants or seeds. Talk together about what you’ll plant next spring. This will help you understand the importance of tilling the soil.
