Zechariah saw in a vision the high priest Joshua standing before God. When Satan accused Joshua, God rebuked Satan. God then took away Joshua’s filthy clothes, dressed him in splendid garments, and placed a clean turban on his head. This symbolizes God’s forgiveness of Israel’s sins and their restoration.

Zechariah, whose name means “The Lord remembers,” was from a priestly family. His father was Berechiah, and his grandfather Iddo is listed among the priests who returned to Jerusalem during the first wave of exiles (537 B.C.; Nehemiah 12:4). Zechariah received eight visions representing both judgment and restoration for Israel. The vision concerning the high priest Joshua is the fourth among them.
In this vision, as though in a heavenly courtroom, the high priest Joshua—representing Israel—stands before God. Satan, whose name means “accuser” or “adversary,” constantly seeks to tempt God’s people to sin and to trap them in guilt and condemnation. Jesus forgives sin, but Satan exposes it to accuse. When Satan accused Joshua of guilt, God sternly rebuked him. Satan is a fallen angel—a created being who cannot rival the Creator.
God, who chose Jerusalem and continually loves His people, accepted Joshua. Joshua is described as “a burning stick snatched from the fire,” symbolizing Israel’s suffering during the seventy years of Babylonian exile—a time of judgment for their sin. God commanded that Joshua’s filthy garments be removed and replaced with beautiful robes, and that a clean turban be placed on his head. This act restored Joshua’s priestly role in the new temple and symbolized Israel’s spiritual restoration as a priestly nation.
Beyond that, this vision reveals God’s redemptive grace and restoration for all sinners who stand accused and helpless before Satan. It shows that through God’s mercy, even those who are guilty and disgraced can be cleansed, forgiven, and restored to a place of honor and service.

Although Satan accused the high priest Joshua, who was wearing filthy garments, God stood on Joshua’s side. God became Joshua’s defender and advocate. In Zechariah’s vision, Joshua represents the entire nation of Israel. God, who chose Israel, loves His people unceasingly. Therefore, He did not leave Satan’s accusation unchallenged but rebuked him firmly.
The passage emphasizes this strongly by repeating the phrase “The Lord rebuke you” twice—showing how decisively God silenced Satan. Though Israel had endured seventy years of captivity in Babylon as punishment, they still stood before God as defiled and sinful. God’s command to remove Joshua’s filthy garments symbolized His act of taking away Israel’s sin and clothing them with beautiful garments—representing righteousness and restoration.
At Zechariah’s request, a clean turban was also placed on Joshua’s head, signifying the restoration of his priestly office and Israel’s renewed calling as a priestly nation. God not only forgives sin but also restores the dignity, mission, and glory of His people. He is the One who turns the accused sinner into a restored servant clothed in holiness.

Satan is merely a created being—a fallen angel. He can deceive, but he cannot directly harm those who believe in God, because God protects His children. The apostle John wrote that Jesus keeps us safe, and the evil one cannot even touch us (1 John 5:18).
Satan tries to separate us from God by tempting us to sin, filling us with guilt, and making us believe we are worthless. But God calls us His precious children—each one unique and deeply loved. God is the One who gives us life and eternal hope, while Satan seeks to destroy and lead people into eternal death.
We must learn to discern between Satan’s lies and God’s truth, and reject Satan’s voice. The way to do this is to stay close to God’s Word and meditate on it continually. When we read and reflect on Scripture daily, we will not be deceived by Satan’s accusations but will live with strength, joy, and the assurance of God’s forgiveness.

“Foot-Washing Ceremony”
<Wash One Another’s Feet>
Preparations: Bible, basin, warm water, towel, soap
1. Remember God’s grace in removing the filthy garments of the high priest Joshua, clothing him in clean garments, and restoring him. Read Zechariah 3:1–5 aloud together.
2. Recall the scene where Jesus washed His disciples’ feet, and read John 13:1–15 aloud together.
3. Explain that Jesus’ act of washing feet symbolizes the cleansing of sin, and His command to “wash one another’s feet” means “forgive one another’s sins.” Help your family understand the meaning of the foot-washing ceremony.
4. Parents wash their children’s feet first, then children wash their parents’ feet (the order can be adjusted to fit your family’s situation).
5. After washing each other’s feet, pray together, blessing one another.
The foot-washing ceremony is a time to remember God’s love that cleanses us from sin and restores us. Play soft worship music in the background, but keep the atmosphere reverent rather than playful. It is a beautiful way for Jesus’ love, forgiveness, and restoring grace to flow among family members. If washing feet feels too difficult, you may wash one another’s hands instead.
