4. 본문 이해 (Understanding the Scripture)
우리는 ‘양’이고 예수님은 우리를 사랑으로 돌보시는 ‘목자’라 할 수 있어요. 돈을 받고 양을 돌봐 주는 ‘삯꾼’은 위험한 상황에 처하면 양을 버리고 도망가 버려요. 반면 ‘선한 목자’는 양을 지키기 위해 자기 목숨을 아끼지 않아요. 예수님은 우리를 위해 목숨을 버리시는 ‘선한 목자’예요.
We are the sheep, and Jesus is the ‘shepherd’ who lovingly cares for us. A ‘hired hand,’ who is paid to take care of the sheep, will abandon them and run away if danger arises. In contrast, the ‘good shepherd’ lays down his life to protect them. Jesus is the ‘good shepherd’ who lays down His life for us.
■ 인도자를 위한 본문 이해 (Understanding Scripture for the Leader)
예수님은 “나는 선한 목자다.”라고 말씀하셨어요. 요한복음에는 예수님이 자신을 소개하실 때 ‘나는 ~이다’라는 표현이 자주 등장해요. 이는 예수님이 자신이 누구인지 강조하며 말씀하시는 표현이에요. 요한복음에서 예수님은 자신을 ‘생명의 떡’(6:35), ‘세상의 빛’(8:12), ‘양의 문’(10:7), ‘선한 목자’(10:11), ‘부활과 생명’(11:25), ‘길이요 진리요 생명’(14:6), ‘참포도나무’(15:1)라고 말씀하셨어요. 본문의 ‘선한 목자’라는 표현은 예수님과 우리의 관계를 비유해요. 팔레스타인에서는 목자들이 양을 돌보는 일을 흔히 볼 수 있어요. 대부분 양을 직접 돌보지만 양의 수가 많을 때는 대가를 주고 대신 양을 돌볼 사람을 고용하기도 했어요. 예수님은 ‘선한 목자’와 ‘삯꾼’을 비교해 말씀하세요. 삯꾼은 들판에서 이리 떼를 만나면 혹시라도 죽을까 봐 양을 버리고 혼자 도망가기 일쑤예요. 하지만 진짜 주인인 목자는 자기 소유의 양들을 아끼고 사랑하기에 위험과 희생을 무릅쓰고 지켜 내요. 그래서 예수님은 “나는 선한 목자다.”라고 말씀하신 거예요. 자기의 양 떼를 아끼며 사랑하기에 모든 위험으로부터 지키고 보호해 주신다는 의미예요. 선한 목자이신 예수님은 양들을 위해서라면 목숨까지도 내놓을 정도로 사랑하세요. 예수님은 죄로 인해 죽을 수밖에 없는 우리를 살리시기 위해 십자가 죽음에 자신을 내어 주셨어요. 우리를 사랑하시기 때문에 생명까지 내어 주신 예수님이 우리의 목자가 되신다는 사실이 얼마나 든든하고 감사한지 몰라요. 연약하고 어리석은 양과 같은 우리가 따라야 할 음성은 선한 목자이신 예수님의 음성이에요. 목자가 되셔서 푸른 초장과 잔잔한 물가로 인도하시는 하나님을 노래한 다윗처럼 말이에요(시 23:1~6).
Jesus said, “I am the Good Shepherd.” In the Gospel of John, Jesus frequently uses the phrase “I am” to introduce Himself, highlighting who He is. In John, Jesus refers to Himself as “the bread of life” (6:35), “the light of the world” (8:12), “the door of the sheep” (10:7), “the good shepherd” (10:11), “the resurrection and the life” (11:25), “the way, the truth, and the life” (14:6), and “the true vine” (15:1).
In Jesus’ time, it was common for shepherds to care for their sheep. While shepherds usually took care of them personally, when the flock became too large, they would hire someone to look after them for a price. Jesus contrasts the “good shepherd” with a “hired hand,” who, when faced with danger, would abandon the sheep and run away. In contrast, the true shepherd, who is the rightful owner, loves the sheep so much that He is willing to risk and sacrifice His own safety to protect them. This is why Jesus says, “I am the good shepherd.” He loves His sheep so deeply that He guards and protects them from all harm.
As the good shepherd, Jesus loves His sheep so much that He willingly lays down His life for them. Jesus gave Himself to die on the cross to save us from the death we deserved because of our sins. How reassuring and grateful we are to have Jesus as our shepherd, knowing that He loves us so much that He laid down His life for us. As weak and foolish sheep, the voice we need to follow is the voice of Jesus, the Good Shepherd, just like David sang of God leading us to green pastures in Psalm 23:1-6.

Jesus said, “I am the good shepherd.” The Jewish people of His day, who were familiar with the lives of sheep and shepherds, would have understood the meaning of this parable. A shepherd usually stays with his sheep, getting to know their individual characteristics and caring for them. But a hired hand, who is paid to look after the sheep on behalf of the owner, often abandons the sheep and runs away when danger threatens his life. In contrast, the good shepherd cares deeply for his sheep, loving them so much that he would lay down his life to protect them. Jesus is that kind of shepherd. Jesus, the “good shepherd,” laid down His life on the cross to save us.

As my Good Shepherd, Jesus is always looking out for me and keeping me safe. If I go down the wrong path, He warns me to turn back. If I’m feeling sad or upset, He comforts me, telling me it’s okay. He watches closely to understand what I like and don’t like, and He lovingly cares for me, cheering me on. With Jesus as my guide, I can live safely in this dangerous world, never knowing when trouble may come. Let’s remember the Good Shepherd who leads us on the right path, and together, commit to following Him.“

Materials: large paper, pencil, ruler, black ballpoint pen or pen, coloring and decorating supplies, neighborhood map printout, etc.
1. Identify the administrative location of your home and church (e.g., ○○-dong, Suwon, Gyeonggido, Korea).
2. Using Google or Naver Maps, discuss how to mark your home, church, and other familiar places on the map.
3. Have your parents or a family member who is good at drawing sketch the map on paper.
4. Draw your home and church on the map, and mark places your family frequents or places you’d like to include.
5. Once the map is complete, decorate it to make it look nice.
6. Post the finished map in a prominent place in your home.
As you draw the map, think about how you can get there quickly and why maps are necessary. In the past, when transportation and roads weren’t as developed as they are today, maps played an essential role. Reflect on how reassuring it must have been to know that Jesus, the Good Shepherd, is leading the way for us.
