4. 본문 이해 (Understanding the Scripture)
예수님은 마지막 유월절 식사 자리에서 제자들의 더러운 발을 씻겨 주셨어요. 발을 씻기는 일은 종이 하는 하찮은 일이에요. 하지만 예수님은 주님이요 선생님인데도 제자들의 발을 씻기심으로 진정한 섬김의 본을 보여 주셨어요. 이것은 우리의 죄를 씻어 주신 십자가 구속 사역과 연결되는 일이에요.
At the last Passover meal, Jesus washed the dirty feet of his disciples. This task was typically done by a servant, as it was considered lowly and humble. However, despite being their Lord and Teacher, Jesus demonstrated true service by washing his disciples’ feet. This act pointed to his redemptive work on the cross, where he would cleanse us from our sins.

제자들은 예수님이 가시는 길을 이해하지 못했어요. 그래서 서로 누가 높은지 다투었어요(마 20:20~21, 24; 눅 22:24). 예수님은 십자가 죽음을 앞두고 계셨는데, 그 일은 온 인류의 죄를 씻기는 구원 사역이었어요. 예수님은 자신이 무엇을 위해 오셨는지 알지 못하는 제자들에게 가르침을 주시고자 그들의 발을 씻겨 주셨어요. 당시 팔레스타인 사람들은 밖에 나갔다가 돌아오면 발을 씻고 실내에 들어갔는데, 보통 발을 씻기는 일은 가장 낮은 계급의 종들이 하는 일이었어요. 예수님은 허리에 수건을 두르시고는 제자들의 발을 차례로 씻겨 주셨어요. 베드로는 스승인 예수님이 자기 발을 절대 씻기실 수 없다고 거부했어요. 그러자 예수님은 “너를 씻겨 주지 아니하면 네가 나와 상관이 없느니라”(13:8)라고 말씀하셨어요. 예수님은 발을 씻기심으로 섬김의 본을 보여 주셨을 뿐 아니라, 십자가에서 죄를 깨끗하게 하시는 구속 사역도 미리 보여 주셨어요. 제자들이 왕으로 오신 예수님 옆에서 한 자리 차지하려는 야망과 탐심으로 가득 차 있었던 것과 달리, 하나님이신 예수님은 낮고 천한 사람의 몸을 입고 오셔서 그들을 위해 자신을 내어 줌으로써 죗값을 대신 치르셨어요. 예수님이 제자들의 발을 씻기신 것은 제자들이 앞으로 행할 섬김을 상징적으로 보여 주신 거예요.
The disciples did not understand the path Jesus was taking, and they argued among themselves about who was the greatest (Matt. 20:20-21, 24; Luke 22:24). Jesus, however, was preparing to die on the cross—a saving act that would cleanse humanity from sin. To teach his disciples, who did not yet understand his mission, Jesus washed their feet.
At that time, people in Palestine would wash their feet after returning home, but this task was usually done by the lowest-ranking servants. Jesus, however, wrapped a towel around his waist and personally washed the feet of his disciples. When Peter refused, saying that his teacher could never wash his feet, Jesus replied, “Unless I wash you, you have no part with me” (John 13:8).
Through this act, Jesus not only demonstrated the heart of service but also foreshadowed his redemptive work on the cross, where he would cleanse them from sin. Unlike the disciples, who were filled with ambition and selfish desires to secure a position next to Jesus as King, Jesus—who is God—humbled himself by taking on human form and willingly giving himself up to pay the penalty for sin. His act of washing the disciples’ feet was a symbolic lesson, preparing them for the life of service they were called to live.

Jesus had spoken multiple times about His coming crucifixion, but the disciples failed to grasp its true meaning. Instead, they were preoccupied with who would hold a higher position if Jesus became king. To clearly teach them His purpose for coming to earth, Jesus humbled Himself like a servant and washed their feet. This act demonstrated humility, service, forgiveness, and love—qualities that directly connected to His atoning work on the cross. The memory of Jesus washing their feet must have remained vivid in their minds, helping them remember His teachings long after.

예수님은 마르다에게 나사로가 다시 살아날 것이라고 말씀하셨어요. 하지만 마르다는 유대인들이 가졌던 전통적인 부활 신앙으로 형식적인 대답을 했어요. ‘마지막 날’에 나사로가 다시 살아날 것을 믿는다고 말이에요. 마르다는 전통적으로 내려오던 부활 신앙을 막연하게 고백했지만, 실제 그런 일이 나사로에게 일어나리라고는 믿지 못했어요. 이에 예수님은 “나는 부활이요 생명이다.”라고 선언하셨어요. 이는 예수님이 죽은 사람도 살리실 수 있다는 말씀으로, 생명의 주권자만이 하실 수 있는 말이에요. 생명이신 예수님은 부활의 첫 열매(고전 15:20~22)가 되셔서 영원한 생명과 구원의 길을 열어 주셨어요. 나사로가 다시 살아난 사건은 이러한 예수님의 부활과 생명을 미리 보여 주는 표적이었어요.
Jesus told Martha that Lazarus would rise again, but Martha responded based on the traditional Jewish belief in resurrection, saying she believed Lazarus would rise on the “last day.” While Martha confessed the traditional resurrection belief, she did not believe it would actually happen to Lazarus. In response, Jesus declared, “I am the resurrection and the life.” This statement meant that Jesus, as the sovereign Lord of life, had the power to raise the dead. As the source of life, Jesus became the firstfruits of the resurrection (1 Corinthians 15:20-22), opening the way to eternal life and salvation. The raising of Lazarus was a preview of Jesus’ resurrection and the life He offers.
“그러나 이제 그리스도께서 죽은 자 가운데서 다시 살아나사 잠자는 자들의 첫 열매가 되셨도다 사망이 한 사람으로 말미암았으니 죽은 자의 부활도 한 사람으로 말미암는도다 아담 안에서 모든 사람이 죽은 것 같이 그리스도 안에서 모든 사람이 삶을 얻으리라”(고전 15:20~22).

Jesus wrapped a towel around his waist and washed his disciples’ dirty feet, showing them firsthand that true service is not about standing over others and displaying power. A disciple of Jesus must humble themselves and serve, even if they hold a position of authority. The world teaches that having power, status, or an advantage should be used for personal gain, often by oppressing others. However, Jesus’ act of service demonstrates how Christians should live. His followers are not meant to focus solely on their own comfort and blessings but should humbly reach out to others and serve them with love.
