4. 본문 이해 (Understanding the Scripture)
십자가 고난을 앞두신 예수님은 제자들에게 고별 설교를 하신 후, 마지막으로 하나님께 기도하셨어요. 예수님은 우리에게 ‘영생’을 주시기 위해 이 땅에 오셨어요. 예수님은 그 목적을 이루시고 하나님을 영화롭게 하길 바라셨어요. 영생은 한 분이시고 참되신 하나님과, 그분이 보내신 예수님을 아는 거예요.
Before his crucifixion, Jesus gave a farewell sermon to his disciples and then prayed to God for the last time. Jesus came to earth to give us eternal life. He desired to fulfill this purpose and glorify God. Eternal life comes from knowing the one true God and Jesus, whom He sent.
■ 인도자를 위한 본문 이해 (Understanding Scripture for the Leader)
십자가 고난을 앞두신 예수님은 제자들이 꼭 알아야 할 진리를 말씀해 주세요. 이 말씀이 담긴 12~16장을 ‘고별 설교’라고 해요. 고별 설교를 마치신 후 예수님은 하나님께 간절히 기도드리셨어요. ‘예수님의 대제사장적 기도’라고 불리는 17장은 예수님 자신을 위한 기도, 제자들을 위한 기도, 그리고 믿는 모든 이를 위한 기도로 이루어져 있어요. 자신을 위한 기도에서 예수님은 자신이 메시아로서 수행하시는 사역의 의미가 무엇인지 하나님 앞에서 확인하셨어요. 여기서 주목할 부분은 ‘영생’이라는 표현이에요. 우리가 일반적으로 정의하는 ‘영생’은 ‘영원히 사는 것’인데, 예수님은 영생을 색다르게 정의해 주셨어요. 즉, 영생이란 한 분이신 참 하나님과 하나님이 보내신 예수 그리스도를 아는 것이라고 하셨어요. 우리가 영이신 하나님을 알 수 있는 방법은 없어요. 하지만 예수님은 하나님이 어떤 분인지 알려 주시기 위해 육신을 입고 이 땅에 오셨어요. 그래서 예수님을 통해서만 하나님이 어떤 분인지 알 수 있어요. 영생은 예수님을 믿음으로써 하나님이 어떤 분인지 아는 것이며, 그분이 주시는 생명을 누리는 것이라고 이해할 수 있어요. 여기서 안다는 것은 단순한 앎이 아니라, 인격적으로 깊이 있는 교제를 누리는 관계를 가리켜요. 하나님은 우리에게 영생을 주시려고 독생자 예수님을 보내셨어요(3:16). 그러므로 영생을 얻는 것, 영생을 누리는 것은 예수님이 우리를 구원하기 위해 오신 하나님의 아들이심을 믿는 것에서 시작된다는 것을 기억해야 해요.
In the days leading up to His crucifixion, Jesus shared essential truths with His disciples. Chapters 12 through 16 are known as the Farewell Discourse. After concluding this discourse, Jesus prayed earnestly to God. Chapter 17, known as the High Priestly Prayer, includes three parts: a prayer for Himself, a prayer for His disciples, and a prayer for all believers.
In His prayer for Himself, Jesus affirmed before God the purpose of His ministry as the Messiah. A key part of this passage is the concept of “eternal life.” While we commonly define eternal life as “living forever,” Jesus offers a different definition: eternal life is knowing the one true God and Jesus Christ, whom God sent.
Because God is spirit, we cannot know Him on our own. However, Jesus came to earth in human form to reveal who God is. Therefore, we can only truly know God through Jesus. Eternal life, then, means knowing God by believing in Jesus and experiencing the life He gives. This “knowing” goes beyond simple knowledge; it refers to a deep, personal relationship with God.
God sent His only Son, Jesus, to give us eternal life (John 3:16). Therefore, receiving and enjoying eternal life begins with believing that Jesus is the Son of God who came to save us.

예수님은 영생이 무엇인지 분명하게 알려 주셨어요. 우리가 아는 영생의 정의는 ‘영원히 사는 것’인데, 이는 예수님이 말씀하신 정의와 크게 다르지 않아요. 하나님과 인격적인 만남(교제, 사귐) 가운데 하나님이 주시는 생명의 복을 영원토록 누리는 것이 곧 영생이기 때문이에요. 하나님이 보내신 예수님은 십자가 죽음으로 사망의 세력을 멸하시고 우리의 모든 죄를 용서해 주셨어요. 그렇기에 예수님을 믿고 주님으로 영접하면, 그분 안에 있는 영원한 생명을 우리도 소유하게 돼요. 예수님은 우리로 영원한 생명을 얻고 그것을 풍성히 누리게 하려고 이 땅에 오셨어요(10:10).
Jesus clearly explained what eternal life is. While we often define eternal life as “living forever,” this is not much different from Jesus’ definition. Eternal life means enjoying the blessings of God’s life forever through a personal relationship and fellowship with Him. Jesus, sent by God, destroyed the power of death through His death on the cross and forgave all our sins. Therefore, when we believe in Jesus and accept Him as Lord, we receive the eternal life that is found in Him. Jesus came to this world so that we might have eternal life and experience it abundantly (John 10:10).

구약 시대에 하나님은 꿈이나 환상 혹은 직접적인 계시를 통해 그분의 뜻을 알려 주셨어요. 신약 시대에는 하나님의 아들 예수님이 이 땅에 오셔서 하나님이 어떤 분인지 보여 주셨어요. 그러기에 우리는 예수님에 대해 증언하는 성경을 통해 하나님을 알 수 있어요. 하나님은 생명의 주권자세요. 하나님이 어떤 분인지 아는 만큼 그분과 교제하며 영생의 복을 누릴 수 있어요. 그러므로 하나님에 대해 더 많이 알기를 사모해야 해요. 하나님을 알수록 우리의 무지와 어리석음에서 벗어나 하나님의 지혜로 이 세상을 볼 수 있어요. 또한 그분의 능력 안에서 힘 있게 살며 이 땅에서도 영생을 누릴 수 있어요.
In the Old Testament, God revealed His will through dreams, visions, and direct revelation. In the New Testament, God’s Son, Jesus, came to earth to show us who God is. Therefore, we can know God through the Bible, which testifies about Jesus. God is the sovereign ruler of life. The more we know God, the more we can fellowship with Him and enjoy the blessings of eternal life. As we grow in our knowledge of God, we escape ignorance and foolishness, gaining the ability to see the world through His wisdom. In His power, we can live boldly and experience eternal life here on earth.
