4. 본문 이해 (Understanding the Scripture)
바리새인들은 율법과 전통을 해석하고 지키는 데 엄격했어요. 그들 중 한 율법사(율법교사)가 예수님을 시험하려고 “어느 계명이 큽니까(가장 중요합니까)?”라고 물었어요. 예수님은 ‘하나님을 사랑하는 것’과 ‘이웃을 사랑하는 것’이라고 말씀하셨 어요. 성경의 가르침은 이 두 가지에 다 담겨 있어요.
The Pharisees were strict in interpreting and keeping the Law and traditions. One of them, an expert in the law (lawyer), tried to test Jesus by asking, “Which is the greatest (most important) commandment?” Jesus said it is to ‘Love God’ and ‘Love your neighbor.’ All the teachings of the Bible are contained in these two.
■ 인도자를 위한 본문 이해 (Understanding Scripture for the Leader)
예수님 당시 이스라엘의 대표적인 종교 그룹은 사두개파와 바리새파였습니다. 사두개파 사람들은 부활이 없다고 주장했고, 바리새파 사람들은 율법 철저하게 지키며 엄격한 경건 생활을 강조했습니다. 앞서 사두개파 사람들이 부활에 관한 질문으로 예수님을 시험했지만, 예수님의 지혜로운 가르침에 아무 말도 하지 못하고 물러났습니다(22:29~33). 이 소문을 들은 바리새인들은 예수님을 직접 시험하고자 했습니다. 율법에 정통했던 그들은 예수님에게 율법 중에서 가장 큰 계명은 무엇 인지 질문했습니다. 바리새인들은 율법과 장로의 유전(종교 전통) 등을 포함해 613개의 계명을 빠짐없이 준수해야 한다고 강조했습니다. 그 계명들은 모두 연결되어 있기 때문에 무엇이 중요하고 무엇이 덜 중요한지 말하기가 어려웠습니다. 그래서 그들은 ‘어느 계명이 큰가?’를 두고 늘 논쟁했습니다. 예수님은 이 곤란한 질문에 명쾌하게 답하셨습니다. 먼저 신명기 6장 5절 말씀을 인용하며 ‘네 마음을 다해, 목숨을 다해, 뜻을 다해 하나님을 사랑하는 것’이 가장 중요하다고 말씀하셨습니다. 그런 다음 레위기 19장 18절 말씀을 인용해 ‘네 이웃을 네 몸과 같이 사랑하는 것’이라고 하셨습니다. 이 두 가지가 율법과 선지자의 말씀, 즉 구약의 모든 말씀을 떠받치고 있는 두 기둥과 같다고 하셨습니다. 하나님을 사랑하는 사람은 이웃을 사랑하게 되어 있습니다. 두 계명은 서로 다른 것 같지만 하나로 연결되어 있습니다.

“너는 마음을 다하고 뜻을 다하고 힘을 다하여 네 하나님 여호와를 사랑하라”(신 6:5).
“원수를 갚지 말며 동포를 원망하지 말며 네 이웃 사랑하기를 네 자신과 같이 사랑하라 나는 여호와이니라”(레 19:18).
During Jesus’ time, the representative religious groups in Israel were the Sadducees and the Pharisees. The Sadducees argued there is no resurrection, while the Pharisees emphasized a strict godly life by keeping the Law rigorously. Previously, the Sadducees tested Jesus with a question about the resurrection, but they could not say anything and withdrew due to Jesus’ wise teaching (22:29–33). Hearing this rumor, the Pharisees intended to test Jesus themselves. As experts in the Law, they asked Jesus which commandment was the greatest. The Pharisees emphasized that 613 commandments, including the Law and the traditions of the elders, must be observed without exception. Because all those commandments were connected, it was difficult to say which was more or less important. Therefore, they were always debating, “Which commandment is the greatest?” Jesus answered this difficult question clearly. First, quoting Deuteronomy 6:5, He said that ‘loving God with all your heart, soul, and mind’ is the most important. Then, quoting Leviticus 19:18, He said it is to ‘love your neighbor as yourself.’ He stated that these two are like two pillars supporting the Law and the Prophets—that is, all the words of the Old Testament. A person who loves God is bound to love their neighbor. Though the two commandments seem different, they are connected as one.
“Jesus replied, ‘You are in error because you do not know the Scriptures or the power of God. At the resurrection people will neither marry nor be given in marriage; they will be like the angels in heaven. But about the resurrection of the dead—have you not read what God said to you, “I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob”? He is not the God of the dead but of the living.’ When the crowds heard this, they were astonished at his teaching.” (Matt 22:29–33)
“Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.” (Deut 6:5)
“Do not seek revenge or bear a grudge against anyone among your people, but love your neighbor as yourself. I am the Lord.” (Lev 19:18)

Please explain to your children the foundation and core content of the Law given by God. Tell them that loving God with all their best is the priority. A person who loves God with all their heart and sincerity naturally comes to love others as well. Then, they will be able to love the neighbors toward whom God’s heart is directed.

‘율법에서 가장 중요한 계명은 무엇인가?’라는 질문은 예수님 당시 이스라엘 사람들이 쉽게 대답할 수 없는 어려운 질문 이었습니다. 사람들은 각자 중요하다고 생각하는 계명을 주장했기에 논쟁이 끊이지 않았습니다. 예수님을 시험하려는 바리 새인들은 당시 유대 지도자들이 결론 내리기 어려워하던 것을 질문했습니다. 만약 어느 한 가지가 중요하다고 대답하면 다른 구절을 대며 예수님을 끝없이 공격하기에 좋은 질문이었습니다. 하지만 말씀이 육신이 되어 이 땅에 오신 예수님은 율법의 정신을 너무나도 잘 아셨고, 따라서 이 질문은 중요한 사실을 가르칠 좋은 기회였습니다. 예수님은 이스라엘 백성 이라면 누구든지 알고 있는 쉐마 말씀을 인용해 하나님을 사랑하는 것이 가장 먼저고, 그다음은 이웃을 자기 몸처럼 사랑 하는 것이라고 말씀하셨습니다. 율법과 예언자들의 말씀(구약을 통칭하는 말)은 이 두 가지에 모두 담겨 있습니다.
The question “Which is the most important commandment in the Law?” was a difficult one that people in Israel during Jesus’ time could not easily answer. Since everyone argued for the commandment they thought was important, debates were endless. The Pharisees, trying to test Jesus, asked a question that the Jewish leaders of that time found hard to conclude. It was a perfect question to endlessly attack Jesus by citing other verses if He answered that any one thing was important. However, Jesus, who came to this earth as the Word made flesh, knew the spirit of the Law so well; therefore, this question was a great opportunity to teach an important fact. Jesus quoted the Shema, which every Israelite knew, saying that loving God comes first, and second is loving one’s neighbor as oneself. The Law and the Prophets (a term for the entire Old Testament) are all contained in these two.

하나님을 사랑하는 것은 입술로만 고백할 것이 아니라 삶으로 드러내야 합니다. 우리는 예배와 교회 생활 그리고 개인적 인 경건 생활을 통해 하나님을 향한 사랑을 표현할 수 있습니다. 하나님을 사랑하는 사람은 이웃을 향해 시선을 두게 됩 니다. 하나님 사랑과 이웃 사랑은 분리될 수 없습니다. 먼저 하나님 사랑을 어떻게 실천할지 나누어 보십시오. 그리고 하 나님께 받은 사랑을 어떻게 이웃에게 전할지 나누어 보십시오. 이웃을 사랑하고 섬기는 것이 믿음 생활(요일 3:17~18)의 일부가 되어야 함을 자녀에게 알려 주십시오.

Loving God should not be confessed only with lips but must be revealed through life. We can express our love for God through worship, church life, and personal spiritual disciplines. A person who loves God sets their eyes on their neighbor. Love for God and love for neighbor cannot be separated. First, share how you will practice love for God. Then, share how you will pass on the love received from God to your neighbor. Let your children know that loving and serving neighbors must be a part of their life of faith (1 John 3:17–18).
“If anyone has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need but has no pity on them, how can the love of God be in that person? Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.” (1 John 3:17–18)
6. 감사하기 (Gratitude)
하나님께 감사드리고 싶은 일을 세 가지 정도 기록하게 한 후에 함께 나눕니다. 일상에서 경험한 크고 작은 감사나 예배 중에 생각난 감사를 나누어도 되고, 평범한 일상을 누리게 하시는 은혜에 대한 감사를 나누어도 됩니다. 감사를 나눔으로 하나님 은혜를 기억하고 하나님 중심의 삶을 훈련하게 됩니다.
Have everyone record about three things they want to thank God for and share them. You may share small or large thanksgivings experienced in daily life, or those that came to mind during worship. You can also share thanks for the grace of enjoying an ordinary daily life. By sharing thanks, we remember God’s grace and train ourselves for a God-centered life.
7. 기도 (Prayer)
하나님, 성경의 모든 말씀이 결국 ‘하나님 사랑’과 ‘이웃 사랑’으로 정리됨을 알게 하시니 감사합니다. 신앙생활을 하면 할 수록 저희가 하나님을 더 깊이 사랑하고, 하나님이 사랑하시는 이웃도 더 세심하게 섬기게 해 주세요.
God, thank You for letting us know that all the words of the Bible are ultimately summarized into ‘Love for God’ and ‘Love for Neighbor.’ As we live our lives of faith, help us to love You more deeply and to serve the neighbors You love more carefully.

‘사랑 가득한 나무’
<사랑 나무 만들기>
* 준비물: 빈 화분, 황토 볼, 두루마리 휴지 심, 색지(녹색, 갈색), 연필, 풀, 가위, 하트 스티커 등
1. 빈 화분에 황토 볼을 채웁니다.
2. 휴지 심을 갈색 색지로 감싼 뒤 풀로 붙입니다.
3. 연필로 초록 색지에 구름 모양의 나무 덤불을 그린 다음 가위로 오립니다.
4. 갈색 휴지 심 윗부분에 2cm 길이의 칼집을 낸 뒤 나무 덤불을 끼웁니다.
5. ‘하나님 사랑, 이웃 사랑’을 위해 실천할 일을 함께 나누고, 이를 실천할 때마다 나무 덤불에 하트 스티커를 하나씩 붙입니다.
6. 일주일 동안 나무 덤불을 하트로 가득 채워 사랑이 가득한 나무를 완성합니다.
황토 볼은 종합생활용품 판매장이나 화분을 파는 꽃가게에서 구매할 수 있습니다. 혹은 가정에 있는 큰 나무 화분을 이용해 하트 스티커 대신 하트 걸이를 직접 걸면서 활동할 수도 있습니다. 하나님 사랑과 이웃 사랑이 결코 분리될 수 없음을 기억 하며 두 가지를 함께 실천할 수 있도록 지도해 주십시오.
‘Tree Full of Love’
<Making a Love Tree>
* Materials: Empty flowerpot, loess balls (clay pebbles), toilet paper roll core, colored paper (green, brown), pencil, glue, scissors, heart stickers, etc.
1. Fill the empty pot with loess balls.
2. Wrap the toilet paper roll core with brown paper and glue it.
3. Draw a cloud-shaped bush on green paper with a pencil and cut it out.
4. Make a 2cm slit at the top of the brown roll core and insert the green bush.
5. Share things to practice for ‘Love for God, Love for Neighbor’ together; every time you practice one, put a heart sticker on the tree bush.
6. Complete the ‘Tree Full of Love’ by filling the bush with hearts throughout the week.
Loess balls can be purchased at general stores or flower shops. Alternatively, you can use a large tree pot at home and hang heart ornaments instead of stickers. Please guide them to practice both, remembering that love for God and love for neighbor can never be separated.
