예수님이 잡혀가셨을 때 베드로는 예수님을 모른다고 부인했어요. 그러나 부활하신 예수님을 만난 후에는 예수님을 사랑한다고 진심으로 고백했어요. 예수님은 베드로의 수치스러운 과거를 책망하지 않으셨어요. 세 번의 질문과 세 번의 응답으로 그의 사랑을 확인하신 후, 그에게 사명을 맡기셨어요.
When Jesus was arrested, Peter denied knowing Him. However, after encountering the risen Jesus, he sincerely confessed his love for Him. Jesus did not rebuke Peter for his shameful past. Instead, through three questions and three responses, He affirmed Peter’s love and entrusted him with a mission.
■ 인도자를 위한 본문 이해 (Understanding Scripture for the Leader)
부활하신 예수님이 제자들을 만나기 위해 갈릴리(디베랴) 호수로 찾아오셨어요. 본문은 예수님이 부활하신 후 세 번째로 제자들을 찾아오신 장면이에요. 예수님은 밤이 새도록 물고기를 잡지 못한 제자들에게 배 오른편에 그물을 던지라고 말씀하셨어요. 제자들이 말씀대로 그물을 던지자 엄청나게 많은 물고기를 잡을 수 있었어요. 이는 처음 예수님을 만났던 때를 연상시켜요(눅 5:4~6). 제자들은 예수님인 줄 알아보았고, 베드로는 물로 뛰어들어 육지에서 아침 식사를 차려 놓고 기다리시는 예수님께 다가갔어요. 하지만 세 번이나 예수님을 모른다고 부인했던 베드로(18:17, 25~27)는 예수님의 얼굴을 뵐 면목이 없었어요. 식사를 마친 후 예수님은 베드로를 치유하시고 회복시키시기 위해 물으셨어요. “네가 이 사람들보나 나를 더 사랑하느냐.” 베드로는 주님께 자신의 사랑을 고백했어요. 예수님은 세 번 같은 질문을 하시며 베드로에게 회복의 기회를 주셨어요. 그리고 진실한 사랑을 고백하는 베드로에게 “나의 양 떼를 먹이라”라며 사명을 주셨어요. 예수님 앞에서 회복하지 못하는 사람은 없어요. 예수님은 우리의 잘못과 실수에도 다시 기회를 주시고 사명을 감당하는 사람으로 회복시키세요.
The risen Jesus came to the Sea of Galilee (Tiberias) to meet His disciples. This was the third time He appeared to them after His resurrection. The disciples had been fishing all night but had caught nothing. Jesus told them to cast their nets on the right side of the boat, and when they obeyed, they caught a huge number of fish—just like when they first met Jesus (Luke 5:4–6). Recognizing that it was Jesus, Peter immediately jumped into the water and rushed toward Him, where Jesus was waiting with breakfast prepared on the shore.
However, Peter, who had denied Jesus three times (John 18:17, 25–27), likely felt unworthy to stand before Him. After they finished eating, Jesus sought to heal and restore Peter by asking, “Do you love Me more than these?” Peter sincerely confessed his love for the Lord. Jesus asked him the same question three times, giving Peter an opportunity for restoration. Then, He entrusted him with a mission: “Feed My lambs.”
No one is beyond restoration in the presence of Jesus. Despite our mistakes and failures, Jesus offers us another chance and calls us to fulfill His mission.
“말씀을 마치시고 시몬에게 이르시되 깊은 데로 가서 그물을 내려 고기를 잡으라 시몬이 대답하여 이르되 선생님 우리들이 밤이 새도록 수고하였으되 잡은 것이 없지마는 말씀에 의지하여 내가 그물을 내리리이다 하고 그렇게 하니 고기를 잡은 것이 심히 많아 그물이 찢어지는지라”(눅 5:4~6).

베드로는 예수님을 뵐 면목이 없었을 거예요. 예수님이 잡혀 끌려가시는 모습을 보자 신변의 위협을 느껴 예수님을 전혀 모르는 사람처럼 행동하며 예수님을 부인했기 때문이에요. 어디든지 예수님을 따르겠다고 큰소리쳤음에도(13:36~37) 위기 순간을 맞이하자 세 번이나 예수님을 부인했어요. 닭이 울자 베드로는 예수님이 예고하셨던 말씀(13:38)을 떠올리며 통곡했어요. 그런 까닭에 부활하신 예수님을 다시 만나 반가웠지만 뵐 면목이 없었어요. 베드로는 부끄러운 마음, 죄스러운 마음이었을 거예요. 그러나 사랑의 예수님은 베드로에게 다시 기회를 주셨어요. 세 번 부인했던 입술로 다시 세 번 예수님을 사랑한다고 고백하게 하심으로 베드로의 실수를 회복시켜 주셨어요. 예수님은 베드로의 고백을 받으시고 “내 양을 먹이라.”라고 사명을 주셨어요. 베드로는 비록 실수를 저질렀지만, 예수님이 다시 기회를 주셔서 주님의 양 떼를 이끄는 초대교회의 지도자가 될 수 있었어요.
Peter must have felt unworthy to face Jesus. When Jesus was arrested and taken away, Peter, fearing for his own safety, denied knowing Him. Even though he had boldly declared that he would follow Jesus anywhere (John 13:36–37), in the moment of crisis, he denied Him three times. When the rooster crowed, Peter remembered Jesus’ words (John 13:38) and wept bitterly.
So while Peter was overjoyed to see the risen Jesus, he likely also felt ashamed and guilty. But Jesus, full of love, gave Peter another chance. By asking him three times, “Do you love Me?” Jesus allowed Peter to undo his three denials with three confessions of love, restoring him from his failure. After accepting Peter’s confession, Jesus entrusted him with a mission, saying, “Feed My sheep.”
Though Peter had made mistakes, Jesus gave him a new opportunity, and Peter went on to become a leader in the early church, shepherding God’s people.

You have probably made mistakes or done something wrong at some point in your life. Share how God has worked in your heart through those mistakes, whether before Him or in front of others.
For younger children, they may not have experienced big mistakes or failures yet. In that case, encourage them to remember that Jesus forgives us no matter what and to have faith to repent and turn back to Him.

베드로의 치명적인 실수에도 예수님은 그를 회복시키시고 초대교회 성도들을 이끄는 사명을 주셨어요. 우리가 아무리 큰 잘못을 저질러도 예수님께 용서받지 못할 죄는 없어요. 예수님은 그분의 자녀를 끝까지 품고 사랑하시는 분이세요(13:1). 또한 그분께 속한 사람을 끝까지 지키시고 잃지 않으시는 분이에요(17:12). 어떠한 실패나 실수도 용서해 주시는 예수님, 언제나 먼저 다가와 만나 주시는 예수님의 사랑을 기억하길 바라요. 그리고 그 예수님께 나의 진실한 사랑을 고백하길 바라요. 내가 드리는 사랑의 고백 위에 주님이 새로운 사명을 주실 거예요.
Despite Peter’s great failure, Jesus restored him and entrusted him with the mission of leading the early church. No matter how big our mistakes are, there is no sin that Jesus cannot forgive. He loves His children to the very end (John 13:1) and faithfully keeps those who belong to Him, never losing them (John 17:12).
May we always remember Jesus’ love—the love that forgives every failure, the love that reaches out to us first. And may we sincerely confess our love to Him. When we offer Him our heartfelt confession of love, He will give us a new mission.

After a week, review how well you kept your commitment and encourage one another.
Examples of actions include:
Arriving at church on time
Going to bed early on Saturday instead of playing games
Doing QT (Quiet Time) daily without skipping
Helping someone in need
Visiting someone who is sick
Reaching out to a lonely or marginalized person and sharing a meal with them
We can express our love for Jesus by doing things that please Him. Let’s encourage one another to continue showing our love for Jesus through our actions!
