49. “You must not count the tribe of Levi or include them in the census of the other Israelites.50. Instead, appoint the Levites to be in charge of the tabernacle of the Testimony–over all its furnishings and everything belonging to it. They are to carry the tabernacle and all its furnishings; they are to take care of it and encamp around it.51. Whenever the tabernacle is to move, the Levites are to take it down, and whenever the tabernacle is to be set up, the Levites shall do it. Anyone else who goes near it shall be put to death.52. The Israelites are to set up their tents by divisions, each man in his own camp under his own standard.53. The Levites, however, are to set up their tents around the tabernacle of the Testimony so that wrath will not fall on the Israelite community. The Levites are to be responsible for the care of the tabernacle of the Testimony.”

51. When the tabernacle is to set out, the Levites shall take it down, and when the tabernacle is to be pitched, the Levites shall set it up. And if any outsider comes near, he shall be put to death.
52. The people of Israel shall pitch their tents by their companies, each man in his own camp and each man by his own standard.
53. But the Levites shall camp around the tabernacle of the testimony, so that there may be no wrath on the congregation of the people of Israel. And the Levites shall keep guard over the tabernacle of the testimony.”
4. 본문 이해 (Understanding the Scripture)
하나님은 전쟁에 나가 싸울 만한 20세 이상 남자들을 지파별로 세어 보라고 모세에게 명하셨어요. 하지만 레위 지파만은 제외하라고 하셨어요. 레위인(레위 사람)은 하나님을 섬기기 위해 구별되었기 때문이에요. 그들은 거룩하신 하나님과 이스라엘 백성을 중재하고, 성막에서 예배를 도왔어요.
God commanded Moses to count all the men over the age of 20 from each tribe who were able to go to war. However, He told him to exclude the tribe of Levi. The Levites were set apart to serve God. They acted as mediators between the holy God and the people of Israel and assisted in worship at the tabernacle.
■ 인도자를 위한 본문 이해 (Understanding Scripture for the Leader)
출애굽한 이스라엘은 시내 광야에 머물며 하나님의 말씀을 받았어요(출 19:1~40:22; 민수기 1:1~10:10). 하나님의 백성이 지켜야 할 십계명을 받았고, 이방 민족과 싸울 수 있도록 군대를 소집하고 전력을 갖추었으며, 공동체의 질서와 규칙을 세웠어요. 하나님은 모세에게 지파와 가문별로 20세 이상의 남자를 계수하라고 명하셨어요. 질서 있는 행진과 더불어 전쟁에 대비하게 하기 위함이에요. 그런데 하나님이 레위 지파는 계수하지 말라고 하셨어요. 레위인에게는 하나님의 성막을 관리하고 그곳의 거룩함이 훼손되지 않도록 지켜야 할 임무가 주어졌어요. 레위인은 이스라엘 백성이 광야를 행진하는 동안 성막을 펼치고 접는 일을 해야 해요. 그리고 백성이 하나님의 거룩한 경계를 함부로 침범해 목숨을 잃는 일(출 19:24)이 일어나지 않게 해야 해요. 하나님은 레위인을 따로 구별해 세우심으로써 하나님의 영광을 드러내시고, 백성이 하나님의 복을 온전히 받을 수 있게 하신 거예요. 레위인은 하나님을 가장 가까이에서 모시는 특권이 주어진 사람들로, 하나님의 영광과 거룩하심을 위해 백성을 잘 섬겨야 해요.
After the Exodus, the Israelites stayed in the wilderness of Sinai and received God’s Word (Exodus 19:1–40:22; Numbers 1:1–10:10). During this time, God gave them the Ten Commandments to follow, an army was assembled and equipped to fight against foreign nations, and order and rules for the community were established.
God commanded Moses to count every man over the age of 20 by tribe and family to ensure an orderly march and to prepare for battle. However, He specifically instructed Moses not to count the tribe of Levi. The Levites were set apart for a different mission—they were entrusted with the responsibility of caring for God’s tabernacle and ensuring its holiness was not defiled.
As the Israelites traveled through the wilderness, the Levites were in charge of setting up and taking down the tabernacle. They were also responsible for making sure that no one trespassed into God’s holy presence, which could result in death (Exodus 19:24).
By setting apart the Levites, God revealed His glory and allowed His people to fully receive His blessings. The Levites were given the privilege of serving closest to God, and they were called to faithfully serve the people for the sake of God’s holiness and glory.

The Levites served as intermediaries between God and the people of Israel. In their role before God, they guarded and maintained the tabernacle to ensure that His holiness was not compromised. In their role toward the people, they taught them to live according to God’s law, helping them avoid His wrath.
Only the Levites were allowed to approach God’s holy tabernacle. If anyone else attempted to come near and crossed God’s boundary, they would face judgment. The Levites played a crucial role in keeping God at the center of Israel. As the Israelites traveled and camped in the wilderness, the Levites remained at the heart of the community, dwelling near the tabernacle and ensuring that God was always at the center of His people.

우리는 모두 예수 그리스도 안에서 하나님이 택하시고 부르신 자들이에요. 하나님은 우리를 자녀 삼아 주셔서 하나님과 교제하고 예배할 수 있는 특권을 주셨어요. 하나님이 구약 시대 레위인들에게 맡기셨던 그 역할을 오늘 우리에게 맡겨 주셨다는 사실을 기억하기 바라요. 하나님과 백성 사이에서 중간 역할을 하며 예배를 섬겼던 레위인처럼 우리도 하나님을 예배하는 일을 도울 수 있어요. 우리에게는 세상을 향해 하나님의 복을 전하는 사명이 있기 때문이에요.
We are all God’s chosen and called people in Jesus Christ. God has made us His children and given us the privilege of having fellowship with Him and worshiping Him.
Let us remember that God has entrusted us with a role similar to that of the Levites in the Old Testament. Just as the Levites served as intermediaries between God and the people by assisting in worship, we too can serve in worship and help others draw closer to God. We have been given the mission of sharing God’s blessings with the world.

1. Think about the people who faithfully serve in your church.
2. Decide who you would like to write a thank-you letter to.
3. Discuss and reflect on what you are grateful for and how you can express it in your letter.
4. Carefully write your letter, place it in an envelope, and prepare it neatly.
5. Prepare a small treat and deliver it along with the letter during Sunday service.
