하나님이 주신 지혜로 솔로몬이 강대한 나라를 이룬 이야기가 주변 민족에게 퍼졌어요. 스바의 여왕은 그 소문을 듣고 직접 확인하러 금은보화를 가지고 찾아왔어요. 솔로몬의 지혜와 영광이 소문보다 더 대단하자, 여왕은 솔로몬을 왕으로 세우시고 공의로 나라를 다스리게 하신 하나님을 찬양했어요.
The story of Solomon’s God-given wisdom that made him a mighty king spread to the surrounding nations. The queen of Sheba heard the rumors and came to see for herself, bringing gold and silver treasures. When she saw that Solomon’s wisdom and glory were greater than the rumors, she praised God for making Solomon king and ruling with justice.

“하나님이 솔로몬에게 지혜와 총명을 심히 많이 주시고 또 넓은 마음을 주시되 바닷가의 모래같이 하시니 솔로몬의 지혜가 동쪽 모든 사람의 지혜와 애굽의 모든 지혜보다 뛰어난지라 그는 모든 사람보다 지혜로워서 예스라 사람 에단과 마홀의 아들 헤만과 갈골과 다르다보다 나으므로 그의 이름이 사방 모든 나라에 들렸더라 그가 잠언 삼천 가지를 말하였고 그의 노래는 천다섯 편이며 그가 또 초목에 대하여 말하되 레바논의 백향목으로부터 담에 나는 우슬초까지 하고 그가 또 짐승과 새와 기어다니는 것과 물고기에 대하여 말한지라”(왕상 4:29~33).
Israel’s greatest period of glory was during the time of Solomon, and the Queen of Sheba’s visit to Jerusalem provides an objective assessment of this. The prevailing view is that the Queen of Sheba was the ruler of an ancient kingdom in the region of Yemen at the southwestern tip of the Arabian Peninsula. Based on the size of the tribute she brought (1 Kings 10:2), it’s clear that Sheba was a wealthy country with a thriving trade. Solomon was able to answer all of the riddles and difficult questions that the Queen of Sheba had prepared for him, because Solomon had tremendous God-given wisdom (1 Kings 4:29-33). Solomon’s palace was enormous and lavish. The rich food, the well-dressed servants, and the ornate decorations inside the palace left the queen speechless. The queen of Sheba, who had seen it all, declared that it was not only everything she had heard, but even better. The queen of Sheba praised the God of Israel for allowing all of this to happen. A Gentile woman praised God. God is using Solomon to show us how incredible it is to live in the blessings of God.

2. She came to Jerusalem with a very great retinue, with camels bearing spices and very much gold and precious stones. And when she came to Solomon, she told him all that was on her mind.

29. And God gave Solomon wisdom and understanding beyond measure, and breadth of mind like the sand on the seashore,
30. so that Solomon’s wisdom surpassed the wisdom of all the people of the east and all the wisdom of Egypt.
31. For he was wiser than all other men, wiser than Ethan the Ezrahite, and Heman, Calcol, and Darda, the sons of Mahol, and his fame was in all the surrounding nations.
32. He also spoke 3,000 proverbs, and his songs were 1,005.
33. He spoke of trees, from the cedar that is in Lebanon to the hyssop that grows out of the wall. He spoke also of beasts, and of birds, and of reptiles, and of fish.

Solomon’s wisdom, as experienced firsthand by the Queen of Sheba, was beyond imagination. The splendor of the palace and the people who lived there were amazing to behold. The author of 1 Kings describes what it would be like to fully enjoy the wisdom and blessings of God. The wealth and fame of the nation of Israel, as witnessed by the Queen of Sheba, was such as had never been seen before or since. Solomon and his kingdom, fully enjoying the blessings of God, exemplify all of this. God wants us to fully enjoy the grace and blessings that Solomon enjoyed. Through Solomon, we can see God’s desire to bless us.

The Bible is full of stories about God’s wisdom and blessings. God is a blessing-giver who gives us what’s best for us, too. We often think of God as a scary God who punishes, a God who judges us without mercy for our sins, and while God can be a sharp corrector when we sin or do wrong, it’s important to remember that’s not who God is (Jer 29:11; Lamentations 3:33). The same God who blessed Solomon wants to bless us abundantly.
