7 얼마 뒤 시냇물이 다 말라 버렸습니다. 그 땅에 비가 내리지 않았기 때문입니다. 8 그러자 여호와께서 그에게 말씀하셨습니다. 9 “너는 일어나 시돈의 사르밧으로 가서 지내라. 내가 그곳에 있는 한 *과부에게 네게 먹을 것을 주라고 명령해 두었다.” 10 엘리야는 일어나 사르밧으로 갔습니다. 엘리야가 성문에 다다르자 과연 한 과부가 그곳에서 나뭇가지들을 줍고 있었습니다. 엘리야가 그 여인을 불러 말했습니다. “목을 *축이게 그릇에 물 좀 떠다 주시오.” 11 과부가 물을 가지러 가려고 할 때 엘리야가 그녀를 불러 말했습니다. “빵도 좀 주시오.” 12 그녀가 대답했습니다. “당신의 하나님 여호와께서 살아 계심을 두고 맹세하는데 제게 빵은 없고 통에 밀가루 한 줌과 병에 기름이 조금 있을 뿐입니다. 제가 나뭇가지를 주워 집에 가서 저와 제 아들을 위해 음식을 만들어 먹고는 죽을 생각이었습니다.” 13 엘리야가 그에게 말했습니다. “두려워하지 마시오. 가서 당신이 말한 대로 하되 먼저 그것으로 나를 위해 조그마한 빵 한 개를 구워 주시오. 그러고 나서 당신과 당신 아들을 위해 먹을 것을 만드시오. 14 이스라엘의 하나님 여호와께서 ‘여호와가 땅에 비를 내리는 그날까지 통의 밀가루가 떨어지지 않겠고 병의 기름이 마르지 않으리라’ 하고 말씀하셨소.” 15 과부는 가서 엘리야가 말한 대로 했습니다. 그러자 그 여자와 엘리야와 그 식구가 여러 날을 먹었는데도 16 통의 밀가루가 떨어지지 않고 병의 기름이 마르지 않았습니다. 여호와께서 엘리야를 통해 말씀하신 대로 된 것입니다.

7. Some time later the brook dried up because there had been no rain in the land.
8. Then the word of the LORD came to him:
9. “Go at once to Zarephath of Sidon and stay there. I have commanded a widow in that place to supply you with food.”
10. So he went to Zarephath. When he came to the town gate, a widow was there gathering sticks. He called to her and asked, “Would you bring me a little water in a jar so I may have a drink?”
11. As she was going to get it, he called, “And bring me, please, a piece of bread.”
12. “As surely as the LORD your God lives,” she replied, “I don’t have any bread–only a handful of flour in a jar and a little oil in a jug. I am gathering a few sticks to take home and make a meal for myself and my son, that we may eat it–and die.”
13. Elijah said to her, “Don’t be afraid. Go home and do as you have said. But first make a small cake of bread for me from what you have and bring it to me, and then make something for yourself and your son.
14. For this is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: ‘The jar of flour will not be used up and the jug of oil will not run dry until the day the LORD gives rain on the land.’ “
15. She went away and did as Elijah had told her. So there was food every day for Elijah and for the woman and her family.
16. For the jar of flour was not used up and the jug of oil did not run dry, in keeping with the word of the LORD spoken by Elijah.

8. Then the word of the Lord came to him,
9. “Arise, go to Zarephath, which belongs to Sidon, and dwell there. Behold, I have commanded a widow there to feed you.”
10. So he arose and went to Zarephath. And when he came to the gate of the city, behold, a widow was there gathering sticks. And he called to her and said, “Bring me a little water in a vessel, that I may drink.”
11. And as she was going to bring it, he called to her and said, “Bring me a morsel of bread in your hand.”
12. And she said, “As the Lord your God lives, I have nothing baked, only a handful of flour in a jar and a little oil in a jug. And now I am gathering a couple of sticks that I may go in and prepare it for myself and my son, that we may eat it and die.”
13. And Elijah said to her, “Do not fear; go and do as you have said. But first make me a little cake of it and bring it to me, and afterward make something for yourself and your son.
14. For thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, ‘The jar of flour shall not be spent, and the jug of oil shall not be empty, until the day that the Lord sends rain upon the earth.’”
15. And she went and did as Elijah said. And she and he and her household ate for many days.
16. The jar of flour was not spent, neither did the jug of oil become empty, according to the word of the Lord that he spoke by Elijah.

4. 본문 이해 (Understanding the Scripture)
북 이스라엘은 비가 오지 않아 심한 가뭄에 시달렸어요. 엘리야는 하나님 말씀을 따라 사르밧에서 한 과부를 만나 떡(빵)과 물을 달라고 말했어요. 여인은 순종하는 마음으로 마지막 남은 재료로 떡을 만들어 엘리야를 대접했어요. 그러자 하나님 말씀대로 밀가루와 기름이 떨어지지 않는 기적이 일어났어요.
Elijah followed God’s word and met a widow in Zarephath, asking her for bread and water. The woman
obeyed and made bread with the last of her ingredients and served Elijah. Then, just as God had said, a miracle happened: the flour and oil stopped running out.
■ 인도자를 위한 본문 이해 (Understanding Scripture for the Leader)
북 이스라엘 왕 아합은 왕비 이세벨과 함께 바알과 아세라를 열렬히 숭배했어요(왕상 16:30~33). 그래서 그 시대에는 바알을 섬기는 제사장들이 득세했고, 백성도 대부분 하나님을 잊어버리고 바알과 아세라를 숭배했어요. 이때 하나님은 엘리야를 세우셔서 하나님만이 살아 계신 분임을 스스로 드러내고자 하셨어요. 오늘 본문은 매우 중요한 의미를 시사해 주어요. 바알과 아세라는 다산과 풍요의 신으로, 농경 사회인 가나안에서 숭배하던 신이에요. 당시 사람들은 어느 때보다 더 많이 바알과 아세라를 섬겼지만 아이러니하게도 북 이스라엘은 심한 가뭄에 시달리고 있었어요. 그런 상황에서 하나님은 엘리야를 통해 하나님만이 비를 내리시며 땅의 소산을 풍성하게 하시는 분임을 보여 주세요. 가뭄 때문에 모두 굶주림에 시달리고 있을 때 하나님이 엘리야를 사르밧의 한 과부에게 보내셨어요. 그 여인은 아들과 함께 한 번 먹을 밀가루와 기름밖에 가진 게 없는 매우 가난한 과부였어요. 더는 희망이 없어 마지막으로 음식을 만들어 먹고 죽으려 하는 상황이었지요. 엘리야는 하나님의 말씀을 전하며 자신을 위해 떡을 만들어 달라고 요청했는데, 이는 과부에게 그가 가진 전부를 요구하는 것과 같았어요. 불순종하는 아합이나 북 이스라엘 백성과 달리, 시돈 땅의 이방인 과부는 자신의 처절한 상황에서도 엘리야의 말을 믿고 순종했어요. 그러자 하나님은 비가 내리는 날까지 여인에게 끊임없이 밀가루와 기름을 공급하시는 놀라운 기적을 보여 주셨어요. 하나님은 가뭄과 기근에 시달리는 상황에서도 하나님 말씀에 귀 기울이고 순종하는 사람에게 은혜를 베푸시고 구원해 주시는 분이에요.
Ahab, the king of northern Israel, along with his queen Jezebel, was an ardent worshiper of Baal and
Asherah (1 Kings 16:30-33). The priests of Baal became dominant in his day, and most people forgot about God and worshiped Baal and Asherah. God raised Elijah to reveal Himself as the only living God. There is a very important message in today’s scripture. Baal and Asherah were gods of fertility and abundance, worshipped in Canaan, an agrarian society. At that time, people worshipped Baal and Asherah more than ever before, but ironically, northern Israel was suffering from a severe drought. God used Elijah to show that God was the only one who could send rain and make the earth’s produce abundant. God sent Elijah to a widow in Zarephath when everyone was starving because of the drought. She was a very poor widow who only had enough flour and oil for one meal with her son. She had no more hope and was about to make one last meal and die. Elijah spoke God’s word and asked her to make bread for him and it was asking the widow to give him everything she had. Unlike Ahab and the northern Israelites, who disobeyed, the widow, a gentile from the land of Sidon, believed and obeyed Elijah, even in her desperate situation. Then God showed her an amazing miracle, providing her with an endless supply of flour and oil until the rains came. God is gracious and delivers those who listen to and obey Him, even in the midst of drought and famine.

30. Ahab son of Omri did more evil in the eyes of the LORD than any of those before him.
31. He not only considered it trivial to commit the sins of Jeroboam son of Nebat, but he also married Jezebel daughter of Ethbaal king of the Sidonians, and began to serve Baal and worship him.
32. He set up an altar for Baal in the temple of Baal that he built in Samaria.
33. Ahab also made an Asherah pole and did more to provoke the LORD, the God of Israel, to anger than did all the kings of Israel before him.

The drought and famine came at a time when the Israelites were worshiping Baal and Asherah, the

Even today, people strive for prosperity, abundance, and good fortune, but we need to remember that it
is God who ultimately blesses and enriches us. See what happened to northern Israel, which worshipped Baal and Asherah, the gods of abundance and fertility, and faced the worst drought and hunger in its history. Confess that God is the one who sends rain and provides food.

When you look at the rice, vegetables, and meat on your table every day, the job you have, the school you go to, the health you have, and the ability to work, you can thank God for all these things. Take a look at the things you take for granted and give thanks to God for them. It will be an expression of faith that recognizes the sovereignty of God, that everything comes from Him, and that He is in control. Your faith in God will be more evident when you confess specific things with your lips.

God, we confess that it is by your great grace that we eat, sleep, work, and go about our daily lives in a normal way. Help us to remember that you are the one who provides for all our needs in due season, and help us to live a life of gratitude in obedience to your Word.

“알록달록 주먹밥 만들기”(Making Colorful Rice Balls)
*준비물: 밥, 다진 채소, 조미 김, 소금과 참기름 약간, 프라이팬, 일회용 비닐장갑, 접시
*Preparation: rice, chopped vegetables, seaweed paper, a little salt and sesame oil, frying pan, disposable plastic gloves, plate.
1. 따뜻한 밥에 소금과 참기름을 조금 넣어 간을 합니다.
Season the warm rice with a pinch of salt and sesame oil.
2. 다진 채소를 프라이팬에 볶습니다. (채소를 너무 많이 넣으면 밥이 뭉쳐지지 않으니 조금만 준비합니다.)
Fry the chopped veggies on the frying pan. (Don’t add too much veggies or the rice won’t hold together, so use a little bit.)
3. 간을 해 둔 밥에 볶은 채소를 넣고 버무립니다. (기호에 따라 소고기나 참치를 넣어도 좋습니다.)
Toss the seasoned rice with the fried vegetables. (You can also add beef or tuna if you prefer.)
4. 밥을 조금 덜어 손바닥으로 뭉쳐서 동그랗게 주먹밥 모양을 만듭니다.
Scoop out a small amount of rice and flatten it into a ball in the palm of your hand.
5. 조미 김을 잘게 부수어 커다란 접시에 펼쳐 놓고, 동그란 주먹밥을 굴려 김 가루를 묻힙니다.
Crumble the seaweed into small pieces, spread it out on a large plate, and roll the rice balls into
rounds to coat them in the crumbled seaweed.
6. 접시에 보기 좋게 담고, 하나님께 감사 기도를 드린 후 맛있게 먹습니다.
Arrange it nicely on a plate, say a prayer of thanks to God, and enjoy.
주먹밥을 접시에 예쁘게 담은 후 가족이 손을 모아 하나님께 감사 기도를 드리는 장면은 자녀의 기억에 아름다운 장면으로 남을 거예요.
After placing the rice balls neatly on a plate, the family joins hands to say a prayer of thanksgiving to God, which will be a beautiful moment in your child’s memory.
