4. 본문 이해 (Understanding the Scripture)
마귀는 우리의 믿음을 무너뜨리려고 쉬지 않고 우리를 유혹해요. 그러기에 정신을 차리고 깨어 있어야 해요. 마귀의 시험과 고난은 나만 겪는 일이 아니에요. 마귀는 예수님을 믿는 모든 사람을 속이고 흔들어요. 마귀를 물리치는 비결은 믿음에 굳게 서서 예수님 이름으로 담대히 맞서 싸우는 거예요.
The devil never stops tempting us to destroy our faith, so we need to stay alert and awake. You are not the only one who faces temptations and trials from the devil. The devil deceives and shakes everyone who believes in Jesus. The secret to defeating the devil is to stand firm in your faith and stand boldly against him in Jesus’ name.

베드로는 박해를 견디며 살아가는 성도들에게 믿음 안에서 굳게 서 있으라고 당부해요. 눈에 보이는 것이 위협적이며 더 큰 영향력이 있어 보이기 때문이에요. 성도는 보는 것으로 살아가지 않고 믿음으로 사는 사람이에요(고후 5:7). 원수 마귀는 성도가 믿음으로 살지 못하도록 눈에 보이는 것이 더 크고 힘이 있다고 속여요. 우리가 믿음 위에 든든히 서지 않으면 보이는 것이 더 크게 보이고 두려움으로 위축되어 믿음을 포기하고 절망하게 돼요. 그렇기에 믿음 위에 굳게 서서 마귀의 거짓 속삭임과 계속되는 참소를 대적하며 적극적으로 싸워야 해요. 바울은 마귀를 대적하기 위해 하나님의 전신 갑주를 입으라고 해요(엡 6:13~18). 언제 어디서 우리의 믿음을 무너뜨리고 하나님과 멀어지게 할지 모르기 때문이에요. 우리는 마귀의 존재를 기억하며 늘 깨어 있어야 해요. 정신을 차리고 깨어 있다는 것은 경비병이 경계 태세를 늦추지 않고 온전히 집중하는 모습을 말해요. 베드로의 경고는 초대교회에만 적용되는 것이 아니라 오늘날 우리 그리스도인에게도 동일하게 적용돼요. 하나님을 생각할 겨를도 없이 분주하고 바쁜 삶, 돈을 의지하는 삶, 영향력 있는 사람을 의지하는 삶, 그리고 그들과 같이 되려고 성공에 집착하는 삶 등 우리의 믿음을 무가치하게 여기게 하는 요소가 주변에 참 많아요. 그런 세상에서 경계를 늦추지 말고 온전한 믿음의 사람으로 살아가기 위해 힘써야 해요.
Peter urges the believers who are enduring persecution to stand firm in the faith because the visible is threatening and seems to have more power. A believer must live by faith, not by sight (2 Corinthians 5:7). The enemy, the devil, tries to keep us from living by faith by convincing us that the visible is bigger and more powerful. If we don’t stand firmly on our faith, the visible becomes bigger and more powerful and we shrink in fear, giving up our faith and despairing. That is why we need to stand firm on our faith and actively fight against the devil’s false whispers and constant accusations. Paul tells us to put on the whole armor of God to resist the devil (Eph. 6:13-18). We must always be alert and aware of the devil’s presence because we never know when or where he will try to undermine our faith and draw us away from God. To be alert and aware is like a guard being on guard and fully focused. Peter’s warning does not just apply to the early church but to us Christians today. There are so many things around us that can make our faith seem worthless: a busy, hectic life that leaves little time for God, a life of dependence on money, a life of dependence on influential people, and a life obsessed with success so that we can be like them. In this world, we need to be vigilant and strive to live as people of faith.

16. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one.
17. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.
18. And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints.

베드로는 마귀를 대적하기 위해 정신을 차리고 깨어 있으라고 해요. 바울은 이 같은 태도를 하나님의 전신 갑주를 입는 것에 비유해요(엡 6:13~18). 진리의 말씀으로 허리띠를 띠고, 의의 호심경을 붙이고, 평안의 복음으로 신을 신고, 믿음의 방패와 구원의 투구를 갖추고, 성령의 검 곧 하나님의 말씀으로 싸우라고 말해요. 즉 믿음 안에서 정신을 차리고 깨어 있는 삶은 경계 태세를 늦추지 않고 모든 것을 믿음 안에서 비춰 보며 사는 삶을 말해요.
Peter tells us to be sober and alert to resist the devil, and Paul likens this attitude to putting on the full armor of God (Eph. 6:13-18). He tells us to gird up our loins with the word of truth, fasten the breastplate of righteousness, put on the shoes of the gospel of peace, equip ourselves with the shield of faith and the helmet of salvation, and fight with the sword of the Spirit, the word of God. In other words, living a life of alertness and vigilance in the faith is a life lived with a constant state of vigilance, keeping everything in the light of faith.

정신을 차리고 깨어 있는 삶은 눈에 보이는 것에 좌우되지 않고 믿음으로 행동하는 것을 말해요. 믿음 안에서 흔들리지 않기 위해서는 언제 어디서나 하나님과 연결되어 있어야 해요. 가족과의 관계, 직장 동료와의 관계, 학교 친구와의 관계, 그리고 내가 의도하는 것을 이루는 과정 등 모든 일에 하나님이 원하시는 바가 우선되어야 해요. 내가 기준이 되고 세상 판단이 기준이 되면 믿음으로 살 수 없어요. 하나님을 늘 생각하고 그분의 기준에 삶을 맞추며 순종할 때, 믿음으로 승리하는 삶을 살게 될 거예요.
Living sober and awake is about acting by faith and not by what you can see. In order to stay steadfast in my faith, I need to be connected to God everywhere and at all times. God’s will must come first in everything I do: my relationships with my family, my relationships with my coworkers, my relationships with my friends at school, and in the process of achieving what I set out to do. I cannot live by faith if I am my own standard and the world’s judgment is my standard. When I am always thinking about God, aligning my life with His standards, and obeying Him, I will live a victorious life of faith.

God, I do not want to be deceived by the devil, the father of lies, anymore. Help me to live by faith and not be deceived by what I see. Help me to clothe myself daily with the full armor of God, to stand firm on my faith, and to resist the devil with boldness.

The phrase “living awake in faith” can be challenging for children, so it is helpful to use an example from everyday life: the role of a security guard. Use the security guard to help them think about the concept of living a spiritually awake life in concrete terms.
