2. Now Ahaziah had fallen through the lattice of his upper room in Samaria and injured himself. So he sent messengers, saying to them, “Go and consult Baal-Zebub, the god of Ekron, to see if I will recover from this injury.”
3. But the angel of the LORD said to Elijah the Tishbite, “Go up and meet the messengers of the king of Samaria and ask them, `Is it because there is no God in Israel that you are going off to consult Baal-Zebub, the god of Ekron?’
4. Therefore this is what the LORD says: `You will not leave the bed you are lying on. You will certainly die!'” So Elijah went.

2 Now Ahaziah fell through the lattice in his upper chamber in Samaria, and lay sick; so he sent messengers, telling them, “Go, inquire of cBaal-zebub, the god of Ekron, dwhether I shall recover from this sickness.” 3 But the angel of the LORD said to Elijah ethe Tishbite, “Arise, go up to meet the messengers of the king of Samaria, and say to them, ‘Is it because there is no God in Israel that you are going to inquire of cBaal-zebub, the god of Ekron? 4 Now therefore thus says the LORD, fYou shall not come down from the bed to which you have gone up, but you shall surely die.’” So Elijah went.

4. 본문 이해 (Understanding the Scripture)
북 이스라엘 왕 아하시야는 왕궁 다락방 난간에서 떨어져 큰 부상을 입었어요. 죽음의 위기 앞에서 그는 하나님을 찾지 않고 에그론의 신 바알세붑에게 심부름꾼을 보내 자신의 병에 대해 묻게 했어요. 진노하신 하나님은 엘리야를 아하시야에게 보내 그의 불신앙을 꾸짖으시고 죽음을 선포하셨어요.
Ahaziah, king of northern Israel, fell from the railing of the attic of his palace and was severely injured. Faced with
death, he did not seek God, but sent an errand boy to Baalzebub, the god of Egron, to inquire about his illness. In
anger, God sent Elijah to Ahaziah to rebuke his unbelief and pronounce his death.
■ 인도자를 위한 본문 이해 (Understanding Scripture for the Leader)
북 이스라엘 왕 아하시야는 열심히 우상을 숭배하던 아합과 이세벨의 아들이에요. 아합과 이세벨을 본받은 그는 하나님 보시기에 악하다고 평가받았어요(왕상 22:51~53). 아하시야는 이스라엘의 하나님을 무시하고 우상을 더 의지했어요. 왕궁의 옥상 난간에서 떨어져 크게 다친 아하시야는 심부름꾼을 에그론(블레셋의 도시)의 신 바알세붑에게 보내 자신이 살아나게 될지 물었어요. 바알세붑은 파리 모양을 한 신으로 ‘오물의 신’으로 불리기도 했는데, 예언하는 능력이 있다고 여겨지는 우상이었어요. 위기 앞에서 하나님이 아닌 우상을 찾는 모습을 보신 하나님은 엘리야를 보내 그가 알고 싶어 하는 그의 최후를 전해 주셨어요. 엘리야는 왕의 심부름꾼을 만나 아하시야가 이스라엘에 하나님이 없어서 이방신을 찾는 어리석은 행동을 하느냐고 꾸짖어요. 그리고 아하시야가 반드시 죽게 될 것이라는 하나님의 말씀을 전해 주었어요. 하나님은 끊임없이 하나님의 사람을 보내 하나님만이 생명의 주인이시며 온 세상을 다스리시는 분임을 알려 주셨어요. 하지만 어리석고 고집이 센 사람들은 하나님 말씀에 귀 기울이지 않고 오히려 무능한 우상을 찾다가 멸망하고 말았어요.
Ahaziah, king of northern Israel, was the son of Ahab and Jezebel, who were fervent idolaters, and he was judged to be wicked in
God’s eyes (1 Kings 22:51-53). When Ahaziah fell from the roof railing of the royal palace and was badly injured, he
sent an errand boy to Baalzebub, the god of Ekron (a Philistine city), to ask if he would survive. Baalzebub was a flylike
god, sometimes called the “god of filth,” who was believed to have the power to prophesy. When God saw that
Ahaziah was looking to idols instead of God in the face of crisis, He sent Elijah to tell him the end of his life that he
wanted to know. Elijah met with the king’s messenger and rebuked Ahaziah for his foolishness in looking to foreign
gods because there was no God in Israel. Elijah then shared God’s word that Ahaziah would surely die. God had
been sending men of God over and over again to remind people that God alone was the Lord of life and ruler over the
whole world, but foolish and stubborn people refused to listen to God and instead sought after ineffectual idols and
were destroyed.

중상을 입어 죽을 위기 앞에서도 아하시야는 이스라엘의 하나님을 찾지 않고 에그론의 신 바알세붑에게서 해답을 찾으려 했어요. 하지만 하나님만이 온 세상을 다스리시는 분이자 생명의 주인이세요. 이스라엘의 하나님이 바로 아하시야가 알고 싶어 했던 답을 주실 수 있는 분이에요. 어려울 때 하나님을 찾지 않고 우상을 찾은 아하시야는 결국 죽음을 맞이하게 되었어요.
Even when he was seriously wounded and facing death, Ahaziah didn’t turn to the God of Israel, but to Baalzebub, the
god of Egron, for answers. But only God is in control of the whole world and the giver of life, and the God of Israel is
the one who can give Ahaziah the answers he wanted to know. Instead of turning to God in times of trouble, Ahaziah
turned to an idol, and he ended up dying.

많은 경우 학생들은 문제가 생기면 인터넷을 검색하거나 또래에게 털어놓거나, 또래가 많이 하는 방법으로 해결하려 해요. “이스라엘에 하나님이 안 계셔서 너희가 바알세붑에게 가느냐”라는 하나님 말씀처럼 우리 역시 하나님이 계시는데도 다른 것으로 문제를 해결하려 할 때가 많아요. 그리스도인은 문제가 생기면 먼저 하나님께 기도하고, 하나님 말씀에 귀 기울이며, 성경에서 지혜를 얻는 방법을 선택해야 해요. 나는 힘들고 어려운 일을 해결할 방법을 몰라도, 전능하신 하나님은 선한 답과 해결 방법을 알고 계세요. 하나님 앞에 문제를 솔직히 고백하고 도우심을 구하면 하나님이 도와주세요.
Many times, when students have problems, they try to solve them by searching the Internet, confiding in their peers,
or doing what their peers do. Just as God said, “Because there is no God in Israel, you go to Beelzebub,” we often try
to solve problems with other things, even though we have God. As Christians, when we have problems, we should
choose to pray to God first, listen to God, and get wisdom from the Bible. I don’t know how to solve difficult and
difficult things, but God Almighty knows the good answers and solutions. If I honestly confess my problems to God
and ask for help, God will help me.

In the face of a crisis in his life, Ahaziah still did not rely on God, but on something else that would help him think
better of himself. The Bible says that God alone is the Lord of life and sovereign over all things. A family that believes
in God and prays can always count on God’s help. If you have a difficult problem in your home, be honest with your
children (as much as possible) and pray together to experience God’s work.

God of life and death, I want to be the one who remembers you first in times of crisis. Help my family to be people of
faith who don’t focus on the futility of the situation, but pray together and find our way in your word.
