11. But Naaman went away angry and said, “I thought that he would surely come out to me and stand and call on the name of the LORD his God, wave his hand over the spot and cure me of my leprosy.
12. Are not Abana and Pharpar, the rivers of Damascus, better than any of the waters of Israel? Couldn’t I wash in them and be cleansed?” So he turned and went off in a rage.
13. Naaman’s servants went to him and said, “My father, if the prophet had told you to do some great thing, would you not have done it? How much more, then, when he tells you, ‘Wash and be cleansed’!”
14. So he went down and dipped himself in the Jordan seven times, as the man of God had told him, and his flesh was restored and became clean like that of a young boy.

13. But his servants came near and said to him, “My father, it is a great word the prophet has spoken to you; will you not do it? Has he actually said to you, ‘Wash, and be clean’?”
14. So he went down and dipped himself seven times in the Jordan, according to the word of the man of God, and his flesh was restored like the flesh of a little child, and he was clean.

4. 본문 이해 (Understanding the Scripture)
아람의 군대 장관(군사령관) 나아만이 나병(악성 피부병)을 고치기 위해 북 이스라엘의 엘리사를 찾아왔어요. 엘리사의 심부름꾼이 요단강에서 일곱 번 씻으면 낫는다고 전하자, 나아만은 화가 나서 돌아가려 했어요. 결국 종들의 설득을 받아들여 엘리사의 말에 순종한 나아만은 깨끗이 나았어요.
Naaman, the army minister (military commander) of Aram, came to Elisha in northern Israel to be cured of his leprosy (a malignant skin disease). When Elisha’s servant told him that he could be cured by washing seven times in the Jordan River, Naaman was angry and turned to leave. Eventually, persuaded by his servants, Naaman obeyed Elisha’s words and was cured.

아람은 이스라엘의 북동쪽에 있던 국가이며, 수도는 다메섹이에요. 하나님은 이스라엘뿐 아니라 이방 나라도 통치하시는 분이에요. 본문은 아람 왕의 총애를 받던 나아만 장군에 관한 이야기예요. 나아만은 당시 의술로는 고칠 수 없는 나병(악성 피부병)에 걸렸어요. 나아만이 나병을 고치려고 백방으로 애쓰는 모습을 지켜본 북 이스라엘 출신의 어린 여종이 엘리사 선지자를 소개해 주었어요. 나아만은 아람 왕의 친서를 들고 먼저 북 이스라엘 왕을 찾아갔지만, 무능하고 믿음이 없는 북 이스라엘 왕은 나병을 고쳐 달라는 아람 왕의 편지를 읽고 옷을 찢으며 절망했어요. 아람이 북 이스라엘을 침략했다는 기록을 볼 때(왕하 5:2) 당시 아람의 군사력이 북 이스라엘보다 우세했음을 알 수 있어요. 왕이 옷을 찢었다는 이야기를 들은 엘리사가 나아만 장군을 자신에게 보내라고 해요. 나아만 장군이 엘리사를 찾아왔지만, 엘리사는 만나 주지 않고 심부름꾼을 시켜 요단강에서 일곱 번 씻으라고 전했어요. 이에 나아만은 무시당한다고 생각했어요. 게다가 아람의 아름다운 강 아바나와 바르발과 비교할 수 없이 형편없고 작은 요단강에서 몸을 씻으라는 말이 이해되지 않았어요. 그는 화를 내며 자기 나라로 돌아가려고 했어요. 그때 종들이 나아만을 설득했고, 나아만은 마음을 돌이켜 엘리사의 말대로 요단강에 가서 몸을 씻었어요. 그러자 그의 몸이 어린아이 피부같이 깨끗하게 회복되었어요. 하나님이 일하시는 방법은 우리 생각과 다를 때가 많아요. 이해되지 않고 상식적이지 않아도 하나님의 능력을 믿고 순종하면 놀라운 기적을 맛보게 돼요.
Aram was a country to the northeast of Israel, with its capital in Damascus. God rules not only over Israel, but also over gentile nations. The story is about a general named Naaman, who was a favorite of the king of Aram. Naaman had leprosy (a vicious skin disease) that was incurable by medical science at the time. A young maidservant from northern Israel, who had seen Naaman’s efforts to be healed, introduced him to the prophet Elisha. Naaman first went to the king of Northern Israel with a letter from the king of Aram, but the incompetent and faithless king of Northern Israel tore his clothes in despair when he read the letter from the king of Aram asking to be healed of his leprosy. We know from the record that Aram invaded Northern Israel (2 Kings 5:2) that Aram’s military might was superior to Northern Israel’s at the time. When Elisha heard that the king had torn his clothes, he sent General Naaman to Elisha. Naaman came to see Elisha, but instead of meeting him, Elisha sent an errand boy to tell him to wash seven times in the Jordan River. Naaman felt ignored, and he did not understand why he was being told to wash in the Jordan, which was so small and inferior to the beautiful rivers Abana and Barbal in Aram. The servants persuaded Naaman to change his mind, and he did as Elisha told him and went to the Jordan River to wash, and his body was restored to the skin of a child. The way God works is often not what we think it is, and when we believe and obey God’s power, even when it does not make sense, we see amazing miracles.

아람에 있는 아바나와 바르발은 아름답기로 유명한 강이었어요. 하나님을 믿지 않는 이방 민족은 자연에 신적 능력이 깃들어 있다고 생각했어요. 그래서 강이 크고 화려하면 신적 능력이 충만한 것으로 여겼어요. 한편 요단강은 신적 치유 능력이 있다고 보기에는 작고 보잘것없는 강이었어요. 특히 우기가 아닌 건기에는 더욱더 초라해 보였지요. 하나님은 엘리사를 통해 하나님의 능력을 보여 주시고자 했어요. 요단강이 중요한 것이 아니라 하나님 말씀에 순종하는 것이 중요함을 알려 주시려고 한 거예요. 사람의 계산과 상식으로는 이해할 수 없는 방법이지만, 하나님이 일하시면 볼품없어 보이는 곳에서도 놀라운 일이 일어날 수 있다는 사실을 기억해야 해요.
The rivers Abana and Barbal in Aram were famous for their beauty. The non-believing gentile peoples believed that nature was imbued with divine power, so if a river was large and colorful, it was thought to be full of divine power. The Jordan River, on the other hand, was small and unassuming, especially during the dry season, when it seemed to have divine healing powers. God wanted to use Elisha to demonstrate His power, to show us that it is not about the Jordan River but it is about obeying God’s Word. It is important to remember that when God works, amazing things can happen in seemingly unlikely places, even if they don’t make sense to our human calculations and common sense.

Like Naaman’s hesitation to get into the river, we often struggle to choose what’s right. Let’s talk together to help us see that Naaman’s struggle is our struggle.
▒ 인도자를 위한 해설 (Commentary for the Leader)
우리는 우리의 경험과 지식과 정보를 기준으로 판단할 때가 많아요. 그 판단이 하나님의 뜻을 거스르는 것임을 알면서도 내 욕심을 위해 따르고 있지는 않은지 돌아보길 바라요. 그리고 하나님의 생각은 우리와 다르고 우리의 생각보다 높다는 사실을 기억해야 해요(사 55:8~9). 중요한 선택을 앞두고 하나님 뜻을 구하는 모습은 하나님을 의지하는 믿음의 사람들이 취해야 하는 모습이에요.
We often make judgments based on our own experience, knowledge, and information. May we examine whether we are following our own desires, even when we know they are contrary to God’s will, and remember that God’s thoughts are different and higher than ours (Isaiah 55:8-9). Seeking God’s will before making important choices is what people of faith who rely on God should do.
“이는 내 생각이 너희의 생각과 다르며 내 길은 너희의 길과 다름이니라 여호와의 말씀이니라 이는 하늘이 땅보다 높음같이 내 길은 너희의 길보다 높으며 내 생각은 너희의 생각보다 높음이니라”(사 55:8~9).

Thank God for the things you’ve obeyed, by believing God’s Word is right, and for the things He has healed and restored.

하나님, 때로는 하나님이 원하시는 방법이 이해되지 않고 순종하기 어려울 때가 있어요. 하나님 뜻이 저희 생각보다 항상 높고 크심을 기억하며 순종하게 해 주세요. 그래서 하나님이 예비하신 은혜를 풍성히 누리게 해 주세요.
God, sometimes I don’t understand how you want me to do things and it’s hard to obey. Help me to obey, remembering that your will is always higher and bigger than ours, so that we may enjoy the grace you have in store for us in abundance.
