하나님은 예후를 북 이스라엘 왕으로 세우시고, 아합의 집안사람을 심판하셨어요. 특히 아합의 아내 이세벨은 북 이스라엘에 바알 숭배를 퍼뜨린 장본인이에요. 이세벨은 죽음 직전까지도 교만하게 행하며 예후를 무시했어요. 하나님 보시기에 악했던 이세벨은 하나님 말씀대로 비참한 최후를 맞이했어요.
God made Jehu the king of northern Israel and judged Ahab’s household, especially Ahab’s wife, Jezebel,
who was responsible for spreading Baal worship in northern Israel. Jezebel’s arrogant behavior and
disregard for Jehu even before she died made her wicked in God’s eyes, and she met a miserable end, just as God said she would.

Ahab and Jezebel were responsible for spreading idolatry in northern Israel. They refused to listen to
God’s message from the prophet Elijah. After killing Naboth and taking his vineyard, Elijah pronounced God’s fearful judgment, and Ahab repented. When God saw Ahab’s repentance, He did not judge him while he was still alive. He gave him and his household one more chance. But his wife Jezebel and their children still had not turned from their sin, so they were judged. God made Jehu king of northern Israel and commanded him to destroy the house of Ahab. Jehu killed Ahab’s son Joram and Ahaziah, the king of Judah. He then went to Jezebel, Joram’s mother and Ahab’s wife. Jezebel was a pagan woman who worshiped Baal, and when she married Ahab, she brought Baal worship to northern Israel. When Jezebel realized that Jehu was coming to kill her, she dressed up and adorned her hair, an act that showed her arrogance and lack of fear. Jezebel mocked Jehu, comparing him to Shimri, who had rebelled against the king and reigned for only seven days (1 Kings 16:9-10). However, Jezebel died a miserable death, true to God’s word (1 Kings 21:23). In this way, all of Ahab’s household perished because they did not repent despite God’s warnings. God continues to warn us about sin before executing judgment. God is a long-waiting God, but it is important to remember that the judgment for not repenting is severe and scary.

9. Zimri, one of his officials, who had command of half his chariots, plotted against him. Elah was in Tirzah at the time, getting drunk in the home of Arza, the man in charge of the palace at Tirzah.
10. Zimri came in, struck him down and killed him in the twenty-seventh year of Asa king of Judah. Then he succeeded him as king.

It is uncomfortable and horrifying to look at Jezebel’s death, but it is important to remember that her sins went too far and that God was long-waiting and warning her of her sins before this judgment came to pass. Check out these Bible verses about Jezebel to see why God had no choice but to judge her. Jezebel was the daughter of the Baal-worshipping king of Sidon, Jezebel, who married Ahab in an arranged marriage (1 Kings 16:31). She promoted Baal worship in northern Israel and killed God’s prophets (1 Kings 18:4). When Ahab was desperate to take Naboth’s vineyard, she plotted to have Naboth killed and eventually took Naboth’s vineyard and gave it to Ahab (1 Kings 21:15). Wicked Jezebel was sentenced to a miserable judgment that she would not be buried in a tomb and that her body would be eaten by dogs, which came to pass (9:7, 10).

하나님은 죄를 경고하시고 오래 참으시며 돌이킬 기회를 주셨어요. 하지만 악한 이세벨은 끝내 하나님을 인정하지 않고 죄의 길에서 돌이키지 않았어요. 하나님은 결국 예후를 통해 아합 집안과 이세벨을 심판하셨어요. 하나님은 본래 심판하시고 벌주시는 분이 아니라, 누구든지 회개하고 돌아오면 용서하시는 사랑의 하나님이심을 기억하길 바라요.
God warned Jezebel of her sin, was patient with her, and gave her a chance to turn around, but wicked
Jezebel refused to acknowledge God and turn from her sinful ways. God eventually judged Ahab’s house
and Jezebel through Jehu. Let us not forget that God is not a God of judgment and punishment, but
God of love who forgives anyone who repents and returns.

We need to remember that there is an evil nature within us that is more natural to sin than to live the right way God wants us to live. Living as a slave to sin is not the life of a saved child of God. God has forgiven our sins and saved us through Jesus, and now we need to live a life worthy of that grace. The reality of our faith is that we need to remember God’s love for use on the cross and fight a fierce spiritual battle against sin, even to the point of shedding blood (Hebrews 12:4).

죄 때문에 죽을 수밖에 없던 저희를 예수님을 통해 구원해 주신 하나님 사랑에 감사드리세요.
Thank God for His love for us, for saving us through Jesus when we deserved to die because of our sin.

하나님, 죄로 인해 심판과 멸망이 예정된 저희를 예수님을 통해 구원해 주셔서 감사해요. 심판보다 구원 베풀기를 더 기뻐하시는 하나님의 사랑을 마음에 새기고, 죄를 멀리하고 하나님을 가까이하는 일에 힘쓰도록 도와주세요.
God, thank You for saving us through Jesus from judgment and destruction because of our sins. Help me to take Your love, which is more willing to save than to judge, into our hearts, and to strive to stay away from sin and draw near to You.

*준비물: 투명 비닐백(지퍼백), 유성 매직이나 네임펜, 물, 투명한 큰 통, 검정 크레파스나 색연필, 흰색 도화지나 종이
*Preparations: clear plastic bag (zipper-bag), oil-based magic or sharpies, water, large clear bucket, black crayons or colored pencils, white paper
1. 투명 비닐백 바깥에 유성 매직으로 십자가 테두리를 그립니다.
Draw the border of the cross on the outside of the clear plastic bag with oil-based magic.
2. 비닐백에 들어갈 만한 적당한 크기로 흰색 도화지를 오려 가운데에 검은색 하트를 그립니다.
Cut a piece of white paper the right size to fit in the plastic bag and draw a black heart in the center.
3. 하트를 그린 종이를 십자가와 겹쳐 보이도록 비닐백 안에 넣습니다.
Place the paper in the plastic bag so that it overlaps the cross.
4. 투명한 통에 물을 3분의 2가량 채웁니다.
Fill a clear bucket two-thirds full with water.
5. 비닐백을 물속에 넣으면, 검은색 하트는 보이지 않고 예수님의 십자가만 보입니다.
If you put the plastic bag into the water, you won’t see the black heart, only the cross of Jesus.
이 활동은 빛이 다른 물질을 통과할 때 굴절되는 성질을 이용한 과학 실험이에요. 이를 통해 예수님이 십자가에 달리심으로 우리 죄를 씻어 주셨음을 시각적으로 확인하는 시간이 되면 좋겠어요.
This activity is a science experiment that uses the refraction of light as it passes through different materials to visually confirm that Jesus washed away our sins on the cross.
