하나님은 에스겔을 이스라엘의 파수꾼으로 삼으셨어요. 파수꾼은 공동체를 지키며 위험을 알리는 사람이에요. 파수꾼이 하나님의 경고를 전했는데도 악인이 회개하지 않으면, 파수꾼에게는 잘못이 없어요. 하지만 파수꾼이 깨우치지 않아 악인이 자기 죄로 죽으면, 하나님이 파수꾼에게 책임을 물으세요.
God appointed Ezekiel as a watchman over Israel. A watchman is someone who guards the community and warns them of danger. If the watchman gives God’s warning and the wicked do not repent, then the watchman is not held responsible. But if the watchman fails to sound the alarm and the wicked die in their sin, God will hold the watchman accountable.

Ezekiel received his calling by the Kebar River “in the thirtieth year” (Ezekiel 1:1), which is believed to refer to the year he turned 30. To emphasize that the vision truly happened, Ezekiel carefully recorded the exact time and place the word of the Lord came to him. Judah fell to Babylon after three invasions, the final one in 586 BC. It is believed that Ezekiel was taken to Babylon during the second invasion, around 593 BC (see 1:2).
God gave Ezekiel the role of a watchman. A watchman hears God’s warning and is responsible for passing it on to others. God commanded Ezekiel to eat a scroll containing His words (3:1–3), symbolizing his full acceptance of the message. Ezekiel saw how the people of Israel were living in sin and felt angry and troubled. But God comforted him and gave him strength to carry out his mission (3:14).
Ezekiel had to warn the people so that they would not perish in their sin. If he failed to deliver God’s warning and the wicked died in their sin, Ezekiel would be held responsible. God uses His prophets to warn people of sin because He does not want anyone to be destroyed. He desires that all turn back and be saved. In the same way, God has called us to be watchmen who proclaim the gospel—so that others may turn from sin and find salvation.

First, explain what a watchman is. In biblical times, a watchman was someone who stood guard and warned the people of danger. God appointed Ezekiel as a watchman over the Israelites to help them avoid destruction by warning them of their sins and calling them to repentance.
Help children understand what would happen if a watchman failed to give the warning (v. 18), and what happens if the warning is given, regardless of the outcome (v. 19).

When Babylon had nearly destroyed Judah, God raised up Ezekiel to speak His word. Ezekiel came from a priestly family and would have served in the temple, but he was taken into exile and could not fulfill that role. Instead, he was called to be a prophet while living by the Kebar River in Babylon—a foreign land without a temple.
Yet even in exile, God was still the God of Israel. He had not abandoned His people. Because He loved them, He wanted them to realize their sins and turn back to Him. Repentance was the first step toward restoration.
God made Ezekiel a prophet and gave him the responsibility of warning the wicked to turn from their evil ways. If they did not listen, they would be judged—but Ezekiel would have done his part. This shows God’s heart: He does not want anyone to perish but desires everyone to repent and live.

Just as God gave Ezekiel the mission to warn the wicked, He has given all believers the mission of sharing the gospel. Help the children understand that since we have received the blessing of faith by grace, it’s our responsibility to share that blessing with those who don’t yet know God. Encourage them to think of someone in their life who needs to hear the good news and talk about how they might share it in a loving and simple way.

God told Ezekiel to eat the scroll—His word—and then deliver that message to both the righteous and the wicked. God didn’t want anyone to perish in their sin. In the same way, God has given us, who have received the gospel, the mission of being spiritual watchmen (1 Corinthians 9:16–17).
Today, our role as watchmen is to share the gospel of Jesus Christ. Many people still don’t know that salvation comes only through believing in Jesus. As those who have received His grace, we’re called to spread this good news.
Take time to reflect on the importance of evangelism and think about how you can gently and lovingly tell someone who doesn’t yet believe in Jesus about His love and salvation.

<How to Make a Gospel Tract>
Preparations: red construction paper, white A4 paper, glue, scissors, pens, coloring tools, decorative supplies, and a small gift
1. Talk together as a family about the message of the gospel you want to share and who you want to share it with.
2. Think of fun and simple ways to express the key message you want to include.
3. Cut the red construction paper into a 20cm x 20cm square.
4. Cut the white A4 paper into a 19cm x 19cm square.
5. On the white paper, draw pictures or write catchy, creative phrases that express the gospel.
6. Glue the white paper onto the center of the red paper.
7. Color and decorate it with stickers to make it attractive.
8. Give the finished gospel tract to the person you’ve chosen, along with a small, thoughtful gift.
A small, simple gift—like a flower or a piece of chocolate—can make sharing the gospel more meaningful and heartfelt.
