17. Jehoiada then made a covenant between the LORD and the king and people that they would be the LORD’s people. He also made a covenant between the king and the people.
18. All the people of the land went to the temple of Baal and tore it down. They smashed the altars and idols to pieces and killed Mattan the priest of Baal in front of the altars. Then Jehoiada the priest posted guards at the temple of the LORD.
19. He took with him the commanders of hundreds, the Carites, the guards and all the people of the land, and together they brought the king down from the temple of the LORD and went into the palace, entering by way of the gate of the guards. The king then took his place on the royal throne,
20. and all the people of the land rejoiced. And the city was quiet, because Athaliah had been slain with the sword at the palace.

17. And Jehoiada made a covenant between the Lord and the king and people, that they should be the Lord’s people, and also between the king and the people.
18. Then all the people of the land went to the house of Baal and tore it down; his altars and his images they broke in pieces, and they killed Mattan the priest of Baal before the altars. And the priest posted watchmen over the house of the Lord.
19. And he took the captains, the Carites, the guards, and all the people of the land, and they brought the king down from the house of the Lord, marching through the gate of the guards to the king’s house. And he took his seat on the throne of the kings.
20. So all the people of the land rejoiced, and the city was quiet after Athaliah had been put to death with the sword at the king’s house.

4. 본문 이해 (Understanding the Scripture)
대제사장 여호야다는 요아스를 왕으로 세워 다윗 왕조를 부활시키고, 왕과 백성이 하나님만 섬기도록 언약을 맺게 했어요. 그러자 백성이 바알 제단을 깨뜨리고 바알 제사장을 죽이며 바른 신앙의 길을 걸었어요. 백성이 하나님 보시기에 기쁘게 행하니 하나님은 그들에게 즐거움과 평안을 주셨어요.
Jehoiada the high priest made Joash king, revived the Davidic dynasty, and made a covenant between
the king and people to serve only God. Then the people broke down the altars of Baal, killed the priests of Baal, and walked in the right way of faith. The people did what was pleasing in God’s sight, and God gave them joy and peace.
■ 인도자를 위한 본문 이해 (Understanding Scripture for the Leader)
북 이스라엘의 예후는 요람을 문병하러 온 유다 왕 아하시야도 죽였어요. 아하시야가 죽자 그의 어머니 아달랴가 왕권을 잡았어요. 아달랴는 아합과 이세벨의 딸이며, 정략결혼으로 유다에 시집온 사람이었어요. 그녀는 유다에 바알 숭배를 들여온 장본인이었지요. 아달랴는 왕권을 차지하기 위해 손자들까지 잔인하게 죽이며 스스로 권력을 취했어요. 하지만 하나님은 여호야다 제사장의 아내 여호세바를 통해 다윗 가문의 유일한 혈육인 요아스를 남겨 두셨어요. 성전에서 몰래 키운 요아스가 일곱 살이 되자 여호야다는 하나님이 언약하신 다윗 왕조의 대를 이어 가기 위해 반역을 계획해요. 하나님을 향한 믿음을 지키고 다윗 왕조를 향한 충성심이 있는 백부장들과 가리 사람들과 왕궁을 지키는 호위병들과 함께 철저한 계획을 세워 이 일을 감행해요. 가리 사람(일명 그렛 사람, 대상 18:17)은 다윗이 사울에게 쫓겨 다닐 때 함께했던 블레셋 족속으로 추정되며, 다윗 왕조를 향한 충성심이 강했던 사람들이었어요. 그래서 여호야다는 그들을 믿고 함께 이 중요한 일을 도모했지요. 요아스를 왕으로 세우는 데 성공한 여호야댜는 백성과 하나님의 무너진 관계를 회복하고 언약 백성으로서의 정체성을 새롭게 상기시켜 주었어요. 그러자 백성은 바알의 제단을 제거하고 무너뜨렸어요. 우상 숭배는 하나님이 가장 싫어하시는 죄라는 것을 알았기 때문이에요.
Jehu, a man from northern Israel, also killed Ahaziah, king of Judah, who had come to visit Joram. When Ahaziah died, his mother Athaliah took the throne. Athaliah was the daughter of Ahab and Jezebel, who had married Judah in an arranged marriage. She was responsible for introducing Baal worship into Judah. Athaliah brutally murdered her own grandchildren to gain power for herself, but God left Joash, the only blood relative of the House of David, through Jehoshaphat, the wife of the priest Jehoiada. When Joash, whom she secretly raised in the temple, turns seven, Jehoiada plans a rebellion to continue God’s covenanted line of the Davidic dynasty. He does this with a well-thought-out plan with the help of the centurions, the Gariites, and the palace guards, loyal to the Davidic dynasty because of their faith in God. The Gariites (also known as the Gittites, 1 Chron. 18:17) are a group of Philistines who were with David when he was pursued by Saul, and they were loyal to the Davidic dynasty. So Jehoiada trusted them and worked with them to accomplish this important task. By succeeding in making Joash king, Jehoiada restored the people’s broken relationship with God and reminded them of their identity as covenant people. Then the people removed and tore down Baal’s altars because they knew that idolatry was God’s least favorite sin.

The king and the people made a covenant that made them “God’s people.” The people’s hearts were
transformed. They learned what God hated, and they did their best to turn back to God, getting rid of
everything related to Baal that they had worshiped.

여호야다는 하나님을 떠났던 백성이 하나님과 다시 언약을 맺게 했어요. 그는 백성이 그들의 정체성을 깨닫고 하나님 백성답게 살아가도록 도왔어요. ‘하나님 백성’의 정체성을 확신하게 된 백성은 하나님이 기뻐하시지 않는 바알 숭배를 모두 제거하는 데 최선을 다했어요. 하나님께 집중하면 죄를 분별하게 되고, 죄를 이길 용기가 생겨요.
Jehoiada brought a people who had left God back into covenant with God. He helped the people realize
their identity and live as God’s people. Once the people were sure of their identity as “God’s people,” they did their best to get rid of all the Baal worship that was not pleasing to God. Focusing on God helps us discern sin and gives us the courage to overcome it.

If I know that I am a child of God, I know the heart of God the Father who loves me, so I can live a life that pleases God instead of disappointing Him. So what does it look like to live as a child of God? It is not about being in charge and living according to my desires and ideas, but it is about being in charge and living according to what God wants. God’s way of life is written in the Bible. Let’s support and encourage each other to stay close to God’s Word and apply it to our lives.
