14. Hezekiah received the letter from the messengers and read it. Then he went up to the temple of the LORD and spread it out before the LORD.
15. And Hezekiah prayed to the LORD : “O LORD, God of Israel, enthroned between the cherubim, you alone are God over all the kingdoms of the earth. You have made heaven and earth.
16. Give ear, O LORD, and hear; open your eyes, O LORD, and see; listen to the words Sennacherib has sent to insult the living God.
17. “It is true, O LORD, that the Assyrian kings have laid waste these nations and their lands.
18. They have thrown their gods into the fire and destroyed them, for they were not gods but only wood and stone, fashioned by men’s hands.
19. Now, O LORD our God, deliver us from his hand, so that all kingdoms on earth may know that you alone, O LORD, are God.”

14. Hezekiah received the letter from the hand of the messengers and read it; and Hezekiah went up to the house of the Lord and spread it before the Lord.
15. And Hezekiah prayed before the Lord and said: “O Lord, the God of Israel, enthroned above the cherubim, you are the God, you alone, of all the kingdoms of the earth; you have made heaven and earth.
16. Incline your ear, O Lord, and hear; open your eyes, O Lord, and see; and hear the words of Sennacherib, which he has sent to mock the living God.
17. Truly, O Lord, the kings of Assyria have laid waste the nations and their lands
18. and have cast their gods into the fire, for they were not gods, but the work of men’s hands, wood and stone. Therefore they were destroyed.
19. So now, O Lord our God, save us, please, from his hand, that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that you, O Lord, are God alone.”
4. 본문 이해 (Understanding the Scripture)
앗수르(앗시리아) 왕 산헤립은 예루살렘을 침공하기 위해 선전 포고용 편지를 보냈어요. 히스기야는 두렵고 답답했지만, 앗수르 왕보다 강하신 하나님을 의지했어요. 그는 성전에 올라가 산헤립의 편지를 하나님 앞에 펴 놓고 기도했어요. 살아 계신 하나님은 모든 것을 보시고 들으시는 분이에요.
Sennacherib, the king of Assyria, sent a letter of declaration to invade Jerusalem. Hezekiah was scared and frustrated, but he relied on God, who was stronger than the king of Assyria. He went up to the temple, laid out Sennacherib’s letter before God, and prayed. The living God sees and hears everything.
■ 인도자를 위한 본문 이해 (Understanding Scripture for the Leader)
히스기야는 29년 동안(주전 728~687년) 유다를 다스렸어요. 당시 앗수르는 고대 근동을 장악하던 강대국이었어요. 북 이스라엘은 앞서 주전 722년에 앗수르 왕 살만에셀 5세에 의해 멸망했지요. 앗수르는 살만에셀 5세와 사르곤 2세를 거쳐 산헤립이 왕이 된 후에도 유다를 끊임없이 위협했어요. 결국 히스기야는 산헤립의 압박을 견디지 못하고 엄청난 조공을 바쳐야 했어요(18:13~16). 그러나 산헤립은 만족하지 못하고 유다의 수도 예루살렘을 차지하려고 했어요. 산헤립은 예루살렘에 랍사게(앗수르의 고위 관료 명칭)를 보내 항복을 요구했어요. 히스기야의 신앙을 비웃으며 백성의 믿음을 흔들었어요. 앗수르 왕에게 항복하고 포로로 끌려가는 것이 더 잘 먹고 잘사는 길이라고 선동했어요. 또 어떤 신도 앗수르 왕의 손에서 건질 수 없었다며, 하나님을 무능한 신으로 비하했어요. 히스기야는 이런 내용이 담긴 편지를 들고 성전으로 올라가 하나님 앞에 펼쳐 놓고 간절히 기도했어요. 그는 먼저 자신이 의지하는 하나님만이 천하만국의 주인이며 창조주이심을 고백하고 선포했어요. 그리고 자신이 느끼는 두려움과 현재의 절망적인 상황에 관해서도 솔직히 말씀드렸어요. 앗수르가 얼마나 강하고 위협적인지, 어떻게 주변 나라들을 정복하고 있는지, 또한 얼마나 서슴없이 하나님을 모독하고 있는지 모두 말씀드렸지요. 그러면서 살아 계신 하나님이 유다를 구해 주시길 간절히 기도드렸어요. 사방이 꽉 막힌 상황에서 하나님만 의지하는 히스기야의 믿음은 하나님의 크신 역사를 이루는 통로가 되어요.
Hezekiah ruled Judah for 29 years (728-687 B.C.). At the time, Assyria was the dominant power in the ancient Middle East. Northern Israel had been destroyed by the Assyrian king Sennacherib V in 722 B.C. The Assyrians were constantly threatening Judah after Sennacherib became king. Assyria continued to threaten Judah even after Sennacherib became king, through Sennacherib V and Sargon II. Eventually, Hezekiah was unable to withstand Sennacherib’s pressure and was forced to pay a huge tribute (18:13-16). But Sennacherib was not satisfied and sought to take Jerusalem, the capital of Judah. Sennacherib sent Rabshakeh (a high Assyrian official) to Jerusalem to demand surrender. He sneered at Hezekiah’s faith and shook the faith of the people, telling them that it would be better for them to surrender to the Assyrian king and be taken captive. Hezekiah took the letter up to the temple, spread it out before God, and prayed earnestly. He first confessed and proclaimed that the God he trusted was the Lord and Creator of the heavens and the earth. He was honest about the fear he felt and the hopelessness of his situation. He told them how powerful and threatening Assyria was, how they were conquering the surrounding nations, and how they were blaspheming against God. He prayed fervently that the living God would deliver Judah. Hezekiah’s faith in God became the channel through which God’s mighty works were accomplished.
“히스기야 왕 제십사년에 앗수르의 왕 산헤립이 올라와서 유다 모든 견고한 성읍들을 쳐서 점령하매 유다의 왕 히스기야가 라기스로 사람을 보내어 앗수르 왕에게 이르되 내가 범죄하였나이다 나를 떠나 돌아가소서 왕이 내게 지우시는 것을 내가 당하리이다 하였더니 앗수르 왕이 곧 은 삼백 달란트와 금 삼십 달란트를 정하여 유다 왕 히스기야에게 내게 한지라 히스기야가 이에 여호와의 성전과 왕궁 곳간에 있는 은을 다 주었고 또 그때에 유다 왕 히스기야가 여호와의 성전 문의 금과 자기가 모든 기둥에 입힌 금을 벗겨 모두 앗수르 왕에게 주었더라”(왕하 18:13~16).
13. In the fourteenth year of King Hezekiah’s reign, Sennacherib king of Assyria attacked all the fortified cities of Judah and captured them.
14. So Hezekiah king of Judah sent this message to the king of Assyria at Lachish: “I have done wrong. Withdraw from me, and I will pay whatever you demand of me.” The king of Assyria exacted from Hezekiah king of Judah three hundred talents of silver and thirty talents of gold.
15. So Hezekiah gave him all the silver that was found in the temple of the LORD and in the treasuries of the royal palace.
16. At this time Hezekiah king of Judah stripped off the gold with which he had covered the doors and doorposts of the temple of the LORD, and gave it to the king of Assyria.

Hezekiah is a man of faith who relies on God in the face of enormous problems. He faced the mighty Assyrian attack with faith and relied only on God as he was surrounded and pressured from all sides. Hezekiah’s reliance on the power and authority of the true and only God, the God who made the heavens and earth, rather than the king of Assyria, who conquers one country after another, is a great challenge to us today.

When we’re going through something difficult, when we’re frustrated and upset, and when we’re in a situation where no one else can help us, we can pray to God like Hezekiah did. We can tell God everything honestly, and He will respond with what’s best for us because He is the One who sees, hears, and knows everything.

히스기야는 아무것도 할 수 없는 답답한 상황에서 가장 먼저 하나님 앞에 나아갔어요. 자신을 두렵게 하는 편지를 하나님 앞에 펼쳐 놓고 하나님께 모든 상황을 상세하게 말씀드렸어요. 하나님만이 완전한 도움이심을 믿고 의지했기 때문이에요. 우리가 믿는 하나님은 사소하고 개인적인 일도 지나치지 않고 귀 기울이시는 자상하신 하늘 아버지예요. 우리를 지으신 하나님은 우리 마음을 가장 잘 아시고 도와주실 수 있는 전능자세요. 우리는 하나님 앞에서 감출 것 없이 모든 것을 담대하게 말씀드릴 수 있는 사랑받은 자녀예요.
Hezekiah’s first response to a frustrating situation where he couldn’t do anything was to go to God. He laid out the letter that scared him and told God every detail of the situation, trusting that God was the only One who could help. The God we believe in is a loving heavenly Father who listens to us without overlooking the smallest, most personal details. The God who made us is the Almighty who knows our hearts best and can help us. We are His beloved children who can boldly tell Him everything, with nothing to hide.

Thank God for listening to your prayers when you’re struggling and frustrated.

Explain how to play “I Am Ground” to your family.

Let them know ahead of time that serving a penalty in a game isn’t necessarily a bad thing. It’s a time to get to know each other better by hearing honest feelings and concerns that you may not have thought of. In the same way, our relationship with God can grow closer when we are honest with Him about our hearts.
