4. 본문 이해 (Understanding the Scripture)
바울은 데살로니가 성도들이 보여 준 믿음과 소망과 사랑의 모습 때문에 하나님께 감사했어요. 그들의 믿음이 빨리 성장한 이유는 ‘말씀을 듣는 자세’ 때문이에요. 데살로니가 성도들은 하나님의 말씀을 받을 때 사람의 말로 받아들이지 않았고, 실제 하나님의 말씀으로 받아들이고 온전히 순종했어요.
Paul thanked God for the faith, hope, and love that the Thessalonians had. The reason their faith grew so quickly was because of their “listening attitude.” When the Thessalonians received God’s word, they did not take it as human words; they took it as the real word of God and obeyed it fully.

데살로니가 교회는 바울이 2차 전도 여행 중 데살로니가를 방문했을 때 세워진 교회예요. 바울이 데살로니가에 머문 시간은 매우 짧았어요. 사도행전 기록에 따르면 데살로니가에 3주 정도 머물렀던 것으로 보여요(행 17:1, 2). 그럼에도 바울은 빌립보 감옥에서 체험한 성령의 능력(행 16:23~26)을 힘입어 데살로니가에서 그 어느 때보다 열심히 복음을 전했을 거예요(2:2). 이에 데살로니가에 많은 그리스도인이 생겨 나고 교회가 세워졌어요. 이후 바울은 데살로니가를 다시 방문하고자 했지만, 그 소망은 이루어지지 않았어요. 하지만 디모데를 통해 데살로니가 성도들의 소식을 전해 들은 바울은 그들의 모범적인 믿음 생활과 형제 사랑에 대해 칭찬을 아끼지 않았어요. 또한 성도들의 이러한 믿음 성장과 부흥으로 인해 하나님께 끊임없이 감사드렸어요. 데살로니가 성도들이 믿음과 소망과 사랑으로 굳게 선 이유는 하나님의 말씀을 사람이 하는 말로 받지 않고 실제로 하나님이 하시는 말씀으로 받아들였기 때문이에요. 그런 까닭에 살아 계신 하나님의 말씀이 성도 가운데 살아 움직여 능력을 발휘한 거예요.
The church in Thessalonica was founded when Paul visited the city on his second mission journey. Paul’s time in Thessalonica was very short; according to the book of Acts, he was only there for about three weeks (Acts 17:1, 2). Nevertheless, Paul was probably working harder than ever in Thessalonica because of the power of the Holy Spirit he experienced in Philippian prison (Acts 16:23-26), and he shared the gospel there (2:2). As a result, many Christians were added and a church was established in Thessalonica. Later, Paul hoped to visit the city again, but his desire was not fulfilled. However, when he heard from the Thessalonian Christians through Timothy, he commended them for their exemplary faith and brotherly love. He also praised God for this growth and revival in their faith. The reason the Thessalonians stood firm in faith, hope, and love was because they did not take the word of God as man’s word, but as God’s word, and that was why the word of the living God was alive and powerful in them.
“많이 친 후에 옥에 가두고 간수에게 명하여 든든히 지키라 하니 그가 이러한 명령을 받아 그들을 깊은 옥에 가두고 그 발을 차꼬에 든든히 채웠더니 한밤중에 바울과 실라가 기도하고 하나님을 찬송하매 죄수들이 듣더라 이에 갑자기 큰 지진이 나서 옥터가 움직이고 문이 곧 다 열리며 모든 사람의 매인 것이 다 벗어진지라”(행 16:23~26).
23. After they had been severely flogged, they were thrown into prison, and the jailer was commanded to guard them carefully.
24. Upon receiving such orders, he put them in the inner cell and fastened their feet in the stocks.
25. About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening to them.
26. Suddenly there was such a violent earthquake that the foundations of the prison were shaken. At once all the prison doors flew open, and everybody’s chains came loose.

EEven though the church in Thessalonica had only been established for a short time, the faith of the believers there had grown and progressed to such a degree that it was known and modeled throughout Macedonia and the surrounding area. “We always thank God for all of you, mentioning you in our prayers. We continually remember before our God and Father your work produced by faith, your labor prompted by love, and your endurance inspired by hope in our Lord Jesus Christ.” Paul wrote at the beginning of his letter (1 Thess. 1:2-3). The work of the Holy Spirit continued in the believers after Paul and his team left, and they were an influence for good in the neighboring churches and congregations. This amazing work of faith began with their attitude toward hearing God’s word. They did not take Paul’s word as the word of man, but as the word of God, and the power of the word continued to work because they received it as the word of God.
“우리가 너희 모두로 말미암아 항상 하나님께 감사하며 기도할 때에 너희를 기억함은 너희의 믿음의 역사와 사랑의 수고와 우리 주 예수 그리스도에 대한 소망의 인내를 우리 하나님 아버지 앞에서 끊임없이 기억함이니”(살전 1:2~3).

The key to the Thessalonians’ growth into exemplary people of faith in such a short time was their attitude toward the Word of God. They heard the Word as God’s Word, not man’s word, which enabled them to grow into people of faith who demonstrated “the work of faith, the labor of love, and the patience of hope” in God’s work even after Paul left Thessalonica. Compare the way the Thessalonians received the Word with the way you receive the Word. Reflect on how much you are growing in your faith through your daily encounters with the Word – not just the sermons you hear in public worship, but also the times you encounter the Word in your daily life, such as small groups, home worship, personal meditation time, and sermon broadcasts – and consider how your attitude toward the Word should be different going forward.
