8-5. 우리를 향하신 하나님의 뜻

데살로니가는 마게도냐(마케도니아)의 수도로 당시 인구 20만 명 정도의 매우 큰 도시였어요. 그곳 사람들은 그리스 철학의 영향을 받아 죽음 이후에는 삶이 없다고 생각했어요. 그러나 바울을 통해 복음을 들은 데살로니가 성도들은 죽음 이후의 삶과 예수 그리스도의 재림에 관심을 갖게 되었어요. 하지만 예수님의 재림을 잘못 이해한 그들은 성적으로 문란한 문화에서 벗어나지 못한 채 게으르고 나태한 생활을 계속했어요. ‘어차피 세상이 끝날 텐데 육체의 쾌락을 마음껏 즐기자.’, ‘수고롭게 일하는 것은 필요 없다.’라고 생각한 거예요. 이에 바울은 편지를 써서 재림에 대한 바른 가르침을 주고, 마지막 때를 살아가는 그리스도인이 어떤 삶을 살아야 하는지 교훈해요. 첫째, 항상 기뻐하라고 해요. 기쁨은 자연스러운 감정 중 하나이지만, 바울은 “기뻐하라!”라고 명령해요. 예수 그리스도를 통해 영원한 생명을 얻은 사람은 기쁨의 근원이 예수님께 있음을 기억하라는 뜻이에요. 둘째, 쉬지 말고 기도하라고 해요. 믿음의 삶 곧 거룩한 삶은 하나님의 도우심 없이는 불가능하기에 쉬지 말고 기도하는 삶을 살라고 권한 거예요. 셋째, 모든 일에 감사하라고 해요. 데살로니가 교회는 핍박과 환난 가운데 있었어요(1:6). 하지만 예수님이 성도들에게 주신 최후 승리와 구원의 기쁨을 기억하며 믿음 안에서 모든 상황을 바라보고 감사하라고 한 거예요. 어려운 상황에서 고군분투하며 믿음을 지켜 나가는 성도들을 향한 바울의 사랑이 얼마나 깊은지 알 수 있어요.

Thessalonica was the capital of Macedonia and was a very large city of about 200,000 people. The people there were influenced by Greek philosophy and thought that there was no life after death. However, after hearing the Gospel through Paul, the Thessalonians became interested in life after death and the return of Jesus Christ. However, because they misunderstood the return of Jesus, they continued to live a lazy and idle life, unable to escape their sexually promiscuous culture. They thought, ‘The world is going to end anyway, so let’s enjoy the pleasures of the flesh.’ They thought, ‘There’s no point in working hard.’ So Paul wrote to give them proper instruction about the Second Coming and how a Christian living in the last days should live. First, he tells them to always rejoice. Joy is one of our natural emotions, but Paul commands, “Rejoice!” He wants them to remember that if they have eternal life through Jesus Christ, the source of their joy is Jesus. Second, he tells them to pray without ceasing. A life of faith, a holy life, is not possible without God’s help. He encourages them to live a life of prayer without ceasing because they are powerful. Third, give thanks in all things. The Thessalonian church was in the midst of persecution and tribulation (1:6). But he encouraged them to look at every situation in faith and be thankful, remembering the final victory Jesus gave them and the joy of salvation. This shows the depth of Paul’s love for them as they struggle to keep their faith in difficult circumstances.

“또 너희는 많은 환난 가운데서 성령의 기쁨으로 말씀을 받아 우리와 주를 본받은 자가 되었으니”(살전 1:6).
