9-1. 하나님의 선한 일에 함께해요

예루살렘 성전은 이스라엘 백성에게 심장과 같은 곳이에요. 예배를 드리며 하나님 백성의 정체성을 드러내는 상징적인 장소였어요. 하지만 이스라엘 백성이 하나님을 떠나 우상을 섬겼고 그 결과 심판을 받아 북 이스라엘은 앗수르(주전 722년)에 유다는 바벨론(주전 586년)에 멸망해요. 그때 예루살렘 성전도 처참하게 파괴되었어요. 하지만 하나님이 예레미야 선지자를 통해 주신 말씀대로 70년 후에 바벨론이 멸망하고(렘 25:12~13) 포로로 잡혀갔던 이들이 돌아와요. 1차 포로 귀환은 주전 537년 총독 스룹바벨을 중심으로 이루어졌고, 스룹바벨은 예루살렘 성전을 다시 세웠어요. 예루살렘에 남아 있던 유다 사람들은 성문을 만들어 스스로 보호하려 했지만, 방해 세력 때문에 이루지 못했어요(에 4:11~24 참조). 2차 포로 귀환은 주전 458년 에스라를 중심으로 이루어졌고, 에스라는 신앙 개혁에 힘썼어요. 3차 포로 귀환은 주전 444년 느헤미야를 중심으로 이루어졌어요. 느헤미야는 조국의 회복이 더딘 것을 보고 매우 안타까워했어요(1:2~4). 하나님은 조국의 회복을 간절히 고대하며 기도하던 느헤미야를 통해 일하셨어요. 바사(페르시아) 아닥사스다왕이 느헤미야의 사정을 듣고 적극적으로 돕고 나섰어요. 느헤미야는 예루살렘 성벽을 재건하고자 했어요. 성벽이 든든히 세워져야 예루살렘성 안에 사람들이 거주하고 성전도 제 기능을 회복할 수 있기 때문에 성벽 건축은 꼭 필요한 일이었지요. 하나님을 향한 사랑과 성벽 건축이라는 선한 뜻을 위해 마음을 쏟았던 느헤미야를 하나님은 선하신 손길로 인도해 주시고, 이 일을 시작할 수 있도록 유다 사람들 마음을 움직여 주셨어요.

The Jerusalem Temple was the heart of the Israelites, a symbolic place where they worshiped and expressed their identity as God’s people. But when the Israelites turned away from God and worshiped idols, they were judged, and northern Israel fell to Assyria (722 BC) and Judah to Babylon (586 BC), and the Temple in Jerusalem was destroyed. However, according to God’s word through the prophet Jeremiah, 70 years later, Babylon was destroyed (Jer. 25:12-13) and the captives returned. The first return centered on the governor Zerubbabel, who rebuilt the Temple in Jerusalem in 537 B.C. The Jews who remained in Jerusalem tried to protect themselves by building a gate but they could not do so because of opposition (see Ezra 4:11-24). The second exile was led by Ezra in 458 B.C. Ezra worked to reform the faith, and the third exile was led by Nehemiah in 444 B.C. Nehemiah was frustrated by the slow recovery of his country (1:2-4). God worked through Nehemiah as he prayed and hoped for the restoration of his country. King Artaxerxes of Persia heard of Nehemiah’s situation and actively sought to help. Nehemiah wanted to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem. Building the walls was necessary so that the city of Jerusalem could be inhabited and the temple could be restored to its proper function. Because of Nehemiah’s love for God and his heart for the good cause of building the walls, God guided him with His good hand and moved the hearts of the people of Judah to begin the work.

“여호와의 말씀이니라 칠십 년이 끝나면 내가 바벨론의 왕과 그의 나라와 갈대아인의 땅을 그 죄악으로 말미암아 벌하여 영원히 폐허가 되게 하되 내가 그 땅을 향하여 선언한바 곧 예레미야가 모든 민족을 향하여 예언하고 이 책에 기록한 나의 모든 말을 그 땅에 임하게 하리라”(렘 25:12~13).
12. “But when the seventy years are fulfilled, I will punish the king of Babylon and his nation, the land of the Babylonians, for their guilt,” declares the LORD, “and will make it desolate forever.
13. I will bring upon that land all the things I have spoken against it, all that are written in this book and prophesied by Jeremiah against all the nations.

“내 형제들 가운데 하나인 하나니가 두어 사람과 함께 유다에서 내게 이르렀기로 내가 그 사로잡힘을 면하고 남아 있는 유다와 예루살렘 사람들의 형편을 물은즉 그들이 내게 이르되 사로잡힘을 면하고 남아 있는 자들이 그 지방 거기에서 큰 환난을 당하고 능욕을 받으며 예루살렘성은 허물어지고 성문들은 불탔다 하는지라 내가 이 말을 듣고 앉아서 울고 수일 동안 슬퍼하며 하늘의 하나님 앞에 금식하며 기도하여”(느 1:2~4).
2. Hanani, one of my brothers, came from Judah with some other men, and I questioned them about the Jewish remnant that survived the exile, and also about Jerusalem.
3. They said to me, “Those who survived the exile and are back in the province are in great trouble and disgrace. The wall of Jerusalem is broken down, and its gates have been burned with fire.”
4. When I heard these things, I sat down and wept. For some days I mourned and fasted and prayed before the God of heaven.
