1. On the twenty-fourth day of the same month, the Israelites gathered together, fasting and wearing sackcloth and having dust on their heads.
2. Those of Israelite descent had separated themselves from all foreigners. They stood in their places and confessed their sins and the wickedness of their fathers.
3. They stood where they were and read from the Book of the Law of the LORD their God for a quarter of the day, and spent another quarter in confession and in worshiping the LORD their God.

학사 에스라와 레위인들의 가르침으로 유다 백성은 하나님 말씀을 깨달았어요. 율법대로 초막절을 지킨 후, 백성은 다시 모여 금식하며 회개했어요. 그들은 하나님이 싫어하시는 일을 단호하게 버렸어요. 또한 낮 세 시간 동안 하나님 말씀을 듣고, 이어서 세 시간 동안 죄를 고백하며 하나님을 예배했어요.
After observing the Feast of Tabernacles according to the law, the people gathered again to fast and repent. They resolutely forsook the things God hated. They listened to God speak for three hours during the day and then worshiped God for three hours confessing their sins.

느헤미야는 예루살렘 성벽을 건축해 성전이 온전히 기능할 수 있는 환경을 만들었어요. 이어서 하나님의 백성답게 살아가는 것이 무엇인지, 어떻게 예배드려야 하는지를 구체적으로 가르치기 시작했어요. 에스라를 통해 온 백성이 율법에 대해 배우게 했어요. 학사이자 제사장인 에스라는 2차 포로 귀환을 주도한 인물로, 포로 생활 중에도 율법을 열심히 연구하고 지키며 가르칠 준비가 된 사람이었어요(스 7:6, 10). 그는 백성에게 율법을 자세하게 가르치고, 하나님의 백성답게 살아가도록 그들의 정체성을 깨우쳐 주었어요. 그의 가르침으로 인해 사람들은 하나님 백성으로서의 내적 회복을 이룰 수 있었어요. 에스라를 비롯한 레위 사람들의 열심 있는 가르침과 하나님 말씀에 대한 백성의 사모함으로 유다 공동체는 신앙 공동체로 회복되기 시작했어요. 그들은 율법대로 초막절을 지킨 지(느 8:13~18 참조) 얼마 지나지 않아 다시 하나님 앞에 모였어요. 그들은 해가 뜨자마자 말씀을 들었고, 말씀대로 살지 못했던 모습을 돌아보며 철저히 회개했어요. 말로만 회개하지 않고 자신들의 신앙 정체성을 흔드는 이방 사람(관습이나 우상)과 절교하며 신앙을 지키려고 힘썼어요. 말씀 앞에서 자신을 돌아보며 철저히 돌이킨 사람이 바른 예배자로 설 수 있어요.
Nehemiah built the walls of Jerusalem so that the temple could function fully. He then began to teach the people specifically what it meant to live as God’s people and how they should worship. Through Ezra, the people learned about the law. Ezra, a scholar and priest who led the second exile, had studied the law diligently during the captivity and was prepared to teach it (Ezra 7:6, 10). He taught the people the details of the law and reminded them of their identity as God’s people. His teaching led to an inner restoration of the people as God’s people. Through the zealous teaching of Ezra and the Levites and the people’s hunger for God’s Word, the community of Judah began to be restored as a community of faith. Not long after they had observed the Feast of Tabernacles according to the law (see Neh. 8:13-18), they gathered before God again. They heard the Word as soon as the sun rose, and they repented thoroughly of their failure to live by the Word. They didn’t just repent verbally, but they also sought to keep their faith by breaking with the pagans (customs and idols) that were shaking their faith identity. Only those who have examined themselves before the Word and turned thoroughly can stand as proper worshipers.
“이 에스라가 바벨론에서 올라왔으니 그는 이스라엘의 하나님 여호와께서 주신 모세의 율법에 익숙한 학자로서 그의 하나님 여호와의 도우심을 입음으로 왕에게 구하는 것은 다 받는 자이더니”(스 7:6).
6. this Ezra came up from Babylon. He was a teacher well versed in the Law of Moses, which the LORD, the God of Israel, had given. The king had granted him everything he asked, for the hand of the LORD his God was on him. (Ezra 7:6; NIV)

After observing the Feast of Tabernacles (July 15-22) for a week, as written in the Torah, the people gathered again on the 24th of the month to hear more of God’s Word. They began to realize what it meant to live as God’s people, thoroughly repented and forsook their shameful ways before God, and demonstrated their commitment to living according to the Word by focusing on the Word throughout the day to hear more of it.

The Word and prayer are the way to meet God. The Word is the food of the soul and the compass of life. Prayer is the breath of the soul and the time to talk to God. Listening to God’s Word and talking to God every day will help you grow in intimacy with God. God looks for worshipers who make the Word and prayer a priority in their lives.

Look at what the people of Judah did to meet with God, and how much time they took. They admitted they were sinners, humbly fasted and repented, and then hungrily listened to the Word for three hours and prayed for three hours of repentance. It’s not easy for us to do that every day, but it’s so important to set time in our day to listen to God’s Word and repent, because that’s our time with God. Set time for yourself to meet with God in His Word and in prayer, and make it happen. Focusing on God’s Word, examining ourselves to live according to it, giving up things we don’t like, and worshiping God are all expressions of our love for God.

우리에게 말씀을 주시고 회개할 기회를 주시는 하나님께 감사드리세요.
Thank God for giving us the Word and the opportunity to repent.
7. 기도 (Prayer)
하나님, 저희 가족이 하나님을 더욱 가깝게 만나길 원해요. 하나님이 싫어하시는 말과 행실을 버리고, 전심으로 회개하며 하나님 말씀에 귀 기울이도록 도와주세요. 매일 QT와 매일 기도로 하나님 자녀답게 살아가도록 인도해 주세요.
Dear God, we want our family to have a closer relationship with You. Help us to put away the things we say and do that You don’t like, repent wholeheartedly, and listen to Your Word. Guide us to live like children of God through daily QT and daily prayer.

*준비물: A4 크기의 두꺼운 종이, 필기도구, 자, 하트 스티커, 실물 통장
1. 실물 통장을 참고해 가족 수대로 통장을 만듭니다. (내지는 한 장으로 혹은 여러 장 겹쳐서 만들 수 있습니다.)
2. 종이를 반으로 접고, 겉표지에 ‘하나님을 사랑하는 마음 통장’이라고 씁니다.
3. 하나님을 사랑하는 마음을 어떻게 표현할지 표지 뒷면에 각자 정한 표현 방법을 적습니다.
4. 내지에 날짜와 항목, 시간을 적는 칸을 만들고 예쁘게 꾸밉니다.
5. 하나님을 향한 사랑을 실천할 때마다 통장에 하트 스티커를 붙입니다.
6. 일주일 혹은 정한 기간이 지난 후 가장 많이 스티커를 붙인 사람을 칭찬하고 격려합니다.
QT하기, 기도하기, 예배 준비하기, 찬양하기, 예배 시간에 말씀 경청하기, 다른 이들을 사랑으로 섬기기 등으로 하나님을 사랑하는 마음을 표현할 수 있어요. 통장에 돈을 저금하듯이 하나님을 사랑하는 마음을 차곡차곡 채우는 사랑 통장을 의미 있게 활용해 보세요.
Make the Love Saving Bankbook
“Make a Love Saving Book”
*Preparation: A4(letter)-sized paper, writing utensils, ruler, heart stickers
1. If you have a bank saving bankbook, take it as a guide and make your own version.
2. Fold the paper in half, and on the outside cover, write “Saving of God’s Love”
3. On the back of the cover, write your own way of expressing your love for God.
4. Create spaces in your journal for dates, items, and times, and make it pretty.
5. Place a heart sticker in your bankbook every time you practice love for God.
6. After a week or a set period of time, praise and encourage the person with the most stickers.
You can express your love for God by QT, praying, preparing for worship, singing, listening to the Word in worship, and serving others in love. Use your Love Saving account in a meaningful way, filling it up with your love for God just like you would a bank account.
