4-4. 믿음의 말, 불신의 말

본문은 이스라엘이 출애굽한 이후 하나님을 거역한 결정적인 두 사건(아론의 금송아지 사건, 가나안 정탐 사건) 중 하나예요. 하나님은 가나안 땅을 차지하러 바로 올라가라고 하셨지만, 백성은 머뭇거리며 그 땅을 먼저 정탐해 보자고 했어요. 그래서 모세는 다시 하나님의 허락을 받아 정탐꾼을 보냈어요(신 1:21~22). 바란 광야에 머물던 이스라엘 백성은 각 지파에서 한 사람씩 뽑아 열두 명의 정탐꾼을 보냈어요. 그 땅에 어떤 사람이 사는지, 토질은 어떤지, 그곳 성읍은 얼마나 튼튼한지 등을 살펴보게 했어요. 40일 동안 가나안 땅을 정탐하고 돌아온 이들은 그 땅이 젖과 꿀이 흐르는 좋은 땅이라고 보고했어요. 하지만 곧바로 그곳 사람들이 강하고 성읍은 크고 견고해서 자신들이 차지하기에는 어림도 없는 땅이라고 악평했어요. 그러나 갈렙은 하나님이 함께하신다면 그 땅을 차지할 수 있다고 보고했어요. 이스라엘 백성은 악평하는 소리에 마음이 무너져서 밤새도록 하나님을 원망하며 크게 울부짖었어요. 급기야 그들은 모세가 아닌 다른 지도자를 세워 애굽으로 다시 돌아가는 편이 낫겠다고 선동하기 시작했어요(민 14:1~4). 그러자 갈렙과 여호수아는 옷을 찢으며, 하나님이 함께하시기에 그들은 우리의 밥이 될 것이라고 호소했어요. 결국 하나님은 원망하는 백성에게 진노하셨어요. 하나님을 신뢰한 여호수아와 갈렙을 제외한 20세 이상 사람들, 즉 하나님을 원망하며 신뢰하지 않았던 이들은 가나안 땅에 들어갈 수 없게 되었어요. 하나님의 약속과 복은 믿는 사람들에게만 주어진다는 사실을 기억하게 하는 사건이에요.

This is one of the two defining events (Aaron’s golden calf and the spying incident in Canaan) in Israel’s post-exodus
life. God told them to go right up to take possession of the land, but the people hesitated and wanted to spy out the
land first, so Moses got God’s permission again to send out spies (Deut. 1:21-22). While in the wilderness of Baran, the
Israelites sent twelve spies, one from each tribe, to see what kind of people lived in the land, what the soil was like,
and how strong the cities were. After 40 days of spying out the land, they returned and reported that it was a good
land, flowing with milk and honey. But they immediately said that the people were strong and the cities were big and
strong, and that the land was too good for them to take. But Caleb reported that with God, they could take it. The
Israelites were so overwhelmed by their criticism that they cried out against God all night long. They began to agitate
for a leader other than Moses, saying that it would be better to go back to Egypt (Num. 14:1-4). Caleb and Joshua tore
their clothes and pleaded that with God with them, they would be our food. In the end, God was angry with the
people for their complaining. Except for Joshua , who God, everyone over the age of who and not God not allowed to
enter the land of . This is a reminder that God’s promises and are believe.

“너희의 하나님 여호와께서 이 땅을 너희 앞에 두셨은즉 너희 조상의 하나님 여호와께서 너희에게 이르신 대로 올라가서 차지하라 두려워하지 말라 주저하지 말라 한즉 너희가 다 내 앞으로 나아와 말하기를 우리가 사람을 우리보다 먼저 보내어 우리를 위하여 그 땅을 정탐하고 어느 길로 올라가야 할 것과 어느 성읍으로 들어가야 할 것을 우리에게 알리게 하자 하기에”(신 1:21~22).

“온 회중이 소리를 높여 부르짖으며 백성이 밤새도록 통곡하였더라 이스라엘 자손이 다 모세와 아론을 원망하며 온 회중이 그들에게 이르되 우리가 애굽 땅에서 죽었거나 이 광야에서 죽었으면 좋았을 것을 어찌하여 여호와가 우리를 그 땅으로 인도하여 칼에 쓰러지게 하려 하는가 우리 처자가 사로잡히리니 애굽으로 돌아가는 것이 낫지 아니하랴 이에 서로 말하되 우리가 한 지휘관을 세우고 애굽으로 돌아가자 하매”(민 14:1~4).
