4. 본문 이해 (Understanding the Scripture)
발람은 이방인 점술가예요. 모압 왕 발락이 이스라엘을 저주하려고 그를 불러왔지만, 하나님이 발람의 저주를 막으셨어요. 이스라엘은 하나님이 선택하시고 복 주신 민족이기 때문이에요. 불순종하고 반역하는 민족임에도 택하신 백성을 향한 하나님 뜻은 미움과 저주가 아닌 사랑과 축복이에요.
Balaam was a Gentile diviner. The king of Moab, Balak, summoned him to curse the Israelites. However, God stopped Balaam from cursing them because Israel was His chosen and blessed people. Even though they were often disobedient and rebellious, God’s will for His chosen people was not judgment and curses, but love and blessing.

이스라엘이 아모리 족속의 왕들을 물리치고 승승장구하자 모압 왕 발락은 두려워졌어요. 그래서 당시 뛰어난 점술가로 명성을 떨쳤던 이방인 점술가 발람을 불렀어요. 모압 평지에 진을 치고 있는 이스라엘을 저주해 그들의 세력을 약화시키려고 한 거예요. 발람은 하나님의 선지자는 아니었지만, 칼을 빼 들고 있는 하나님의 사자를 보고는 하나님을 두려워하게 되었어요. 발람은 발락으로부터 존귀와 권세를 주겠다는 유혹을 거듭 받았지만, 하나님 명령에 따라 이스라엘을 저주하지 않았어요. 첫 번째 장소에서 발람이 이스라엘을 저주하지 않고 도리어 축복하자 발락은 두 번째 장소로 그를 데려갔어요. 본문은 두 번째 장소에서 발람이 모압 왕 발락에게 한 말이에요. 발람의 말에서 하나님이 어떤 분인지 잘 알 수 있어요. 하나님은 사람이 아니기에 후회가 없으시고, 하신 말씀을 번복하지 않으시며, 약속하신 바를 분명히 실행에 옮기시는 분이에요. 하나님이 택하시고 복 주기로 작정하신 백성을 저주하는 것은 불가능하다는 말이에요. 이스라엘을 향한 하나님의 복은 불가항력적이기에 누구도 방해하거나 빼앗을 수 없어요. 그러나 얼마 뒤 발람은 물질의 유혹을 포기하지 못하고 교활한 속임수로 이스라엘 백성을 죄악에 빠뜨리는 일을 하게 돼요(31:16).
After Israel defeated the Amorite kings and continued to win victories, Balak, the king of Moab, became fearful. In response, he summoned Balaam, a well-known Gentile diviner, to curse the Israelites who were camped in the plains of Moab, hoping to weaken them through a curse.
Although Balaam was not a prophet of God, when he encountered the angel of the Lord holding a drawn sword, he became afraid and acknowledged God’s authority. Despite Balak’s repeated offers of honor and reward, Balaam refused to curse Israel and obeyed God’s command.
When Balaam blessed Israel instead of cursing them at the first site, Balak took him to a second location in hopes of a different outcome. The passage in Numbers 23:19–23 records what Balaam said from that second place. Through his words, we learn much about God’s character: God is not human—He does not lie, regret, or change His mind. What He promises, He will do. If God has chosen to bless His people, no one can reverse or revoke it.
God’s blessing on Israel was irrevocable and unstoppable. No curse could touch them because of God’s sovereign will. However, later on, Balaam gave in to material temptation and ultimately devised a plan that led Israel into sin through deception (see Numbers 31:16).

Balaam recognized that Israel was a special people chosen by God. Read verse 19 together and talk about who God is and what His will is for Israel. Remind them that no divination or magic can harm someone whom God has decided to bless (v. 23).

Balaam, though a Gentile soothsayer, was still a powerless human being under God’s sovereignty. That’s why he could not dare to curse someone whom God had not cursed. Balaam explained to King Balak what God is like: God is not a man, so He does not lie. He is not human, so He does not change His mind. God is faithful and always keeps His promises. He even forgives Israel’s faults and rebellion and continues to love them. Because God sovereignly chose and blessed Israel, no one could reverse that blessing or turn it into a curse. Balaam understood who God is and boldly declared that he could not curse or harm the people whom God was with.

God is the source of all blessings. He blesses those He has chosen. Israel was the nation chosen from among all the nations to carry out God’s plan of salvation for humanity. And no one can take away the blessings God has given to Israel. This truth is clearly affirmed through the Gentile soothsayer Balaam, who declared that no magic or divination could curse the people God had chosen to bless.
God has also chosen us, led us to believe in Jesus, and called us to live for His Kingdom. The peace, safety, family, church, wisdom, knowledge, access to information, and material resources we enjoy are all blessings from God. But the greatest blessing of all is that we believe in Jesus and have become citizens of heaven.
God desires His children to thrive and enjoy His blessings (Jeremiah 29:11). But in order to continue living in His blessing, our attitude matters. Listening to God’s Word and living in obedience is the way to walk in His blessings (Deuteronomy 28:1–6).

Preparations: bordered printouts (A4 or half A4 size) for each person, writing utensils, sticky notes
1. Draw lots to decide who will receive the blessing prayer.
2. Each family member takes turns sharing the kind of blessing they would like to receive.
3. Write a blessing prayer for the chosen person, combining the blessing they desire with your own words of encouragement and prayer.
4. Take turns reading the blessing prayers aloud and praying for one another.
Hang the blessing prayers somewhere visible and read them often to bless each other daily. Let this be a reminder that God is the one who gives blessings—and that His blessings can never be taken away.
