4. 본문 이해 (Understanding the Scripture)
시편 기자는 조상들에게서 배운 하나님 말씀을 다음 세대에게 전했어요. 하나님의 영광과 능력을 알고 하나님이 행하신 놀라운 기적을 기억하면, 바른 신앙의 길을 걸을 수 있기 때문이에요. 믿음의 선배들이 우리에게 하나님 말씀을 전해 준 것처럼, 우리도 다음 세대에게 하나님 말씀을 전해야 해요.
The psalmist passed down the Word of God he had learned from his ancestors to the next generation. This is because knowing God’s glory and power, and remembering the amazing miracles He performed, helps us stay on the right path of faith. Just as the faithful generations before us shared God’s Word with us, we must also pass it on to the next generation.

Psalm 78 is the second longest psalm in the Bible (the longest is Psalm 119), and it contains teachings directed to the people of Israel. The psalmist wanted to share the lessons he had learned from his ancestors with both his own generation and the ones to come. The heart of his message, found in verse 4, is about “God’s glory, God’s power, and the wonders He has done.”
With this as the introduction, the psalmist goes on to summarize Israel’s history (vv. 5–64). Israel’s ancestors failed to remember the law that God had lovingly given them. They forgot the miraculous works of God and lived in disobedience like the surrounding nations, which led to God’s discipline. Israel’s history is a repeated cycle of salvation, sin, discipline, repentance, and restoration.
By reflecting on this history, the psalmist hoped that the current generation would not repeat the mistakes of their forefathers. Remembering what God has done leads us to live in obedience to His Word.

The psalmist deeply desired to pass on the stories of faith he had heard and learned from his ancestors to both his own generation and the generations to come. Verses 1–4 serve as an introduction, and from verse 5 onward, Psalm 78 summarizes the history of Israel—a cycle of salvation, sin, discipline, repentance, and salvation again.
If we fail to learn from this history, we are bound to repeat the sins of those who came before us. The psalmist shared God’s Word with the hope that the people of Israel and their descendants would remember God’s saving grace, keep His law, recall His mighty works, give Him glory, and live with hope in what God will do.

Augustine, who became a great saint through the tearful prayers of his mother Monica, once said, “I believe that God’s truth was passed on to me through my mother’s prayers and the Word of God.” To instill the right faith in children, we must consistently speak to them about who God is from an early age and live as an example of what it means to be a child of God.
The psalmist wanted to pass on to future generations the glory, power, and miracles of God. Remember that when parents faithfully share their personal experiences of God and why He alone is worthy of trust, that faith will carry on to the next generation.
