12. I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who has given me strength, that he considered me faithful, appointing me to his service.
13. Even though I was once a blasphemer and a persecutor and a violent man, I was shown mercy because I acted in ignorance and unbelief.
14. The grace of our Lord was poured out on me abundantly, along with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus.
15. Here is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners–of whom I am the worst.
16. But for that very reason I was shown mercy so that in me, the worst of sinners, Christ Jesus might display his unlimited patience as an example for those who would believe on him and receive eternal life.

13. though formerly I was a blasphemer, persecutor, and insolent opponent. But I received mercy because I had acted ignorantly in unbelief,

15. The saying is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am the foremost.
16. But I received mercy for this reason, that in me, as the foremost, Jesus Christ might display his perfect patience as an example to those who were to believe in him for eternal life.

Paul uses his own story to illustrate just how amazing the grace of the Lord truly is. He had once persecuted those who believed in Jesus and considered himself the worst of sinners. But the Lord showed him great patience, saved him, and even entrusted him with the role of an apostle. The Lord is merciful—He is patient with sinners and offers salvation.
■ 인도자를 위한 본문 이해 (Understanding Scripture for the Leader)
디모데전서는 바울이 영적 아들이자 동역자인 디모데에게 목회적 교훈을 담아 보낸 편지예요. 에베소 교회를 섬기던 디모데가 여러 가지 목회적인 어려움에 처하자 바울은 아버지의 마음과 선배 목회자의 심정을 담아 편지를 썼어요. 에베소 교회는 진리를 왜곡해 가르치는 거짓 교사들로 인해 어려운 상황에 놓였어요. 바울은 디모데가 그들의 잘못된 가르침에 흔들리지 말고, 오직 진리를 가르치며, 그 진리대로 살아 내는 모범을 보이는 목회자가 되라고 교훈해요. 그러면서 주님의 전적인 은혜와 사랑에 대해 전해요. 바울은 자신이 죄인 중에 괴수였음에도 불구하고 주님이 오래 참으시고 긍휼히 여기심으로 사도가 되었다고 말해요. 당시 거짓 교사들은 율법을 잘 아는 것처럼 말하며 자신들의 우월함과 유익을 챙겼어요. 에베소 성도들은 그러한 가르침은 절대 받아들이면 안 돼요. 그래서 바울은 큰 죄인이었던 자신이 주님의 전적인 은혜로 구원받았음을 간증하면서, 죄인인 우리가 할 수 있는 것은 오직 예수 그리스도를 주님으로 고백하며 믿음으로 나아가는 길임을 말해요.
1 Timothy is a pastoral letter Paul wrote to his spiritual son and fellow worker, Timothy. Timothy was facing various challenges while serving the church in Ephesus, and Paul, with the heart of a father and the wisdom of a seasoned pastor, wrote to encourage and guide him.
The Ephesian church was struggling because of false teachers who distorted the truth. Paul urged Timothy not to be swayed by their errors but to stand firm in the truth and live it out as a faithful example. He emphasized that the grace and love of the Lord are completely undeserved.
Paul confessed that, though he had been the worst of sinners, the Lord had shown him mercy and patience, calling him to be an apostle. Unlike the false teachers who claimed superior knowledge of the law for personal gain, Paul pointed to his own transformation as a testimony to God’s grace. His message to Timothy—and to us—is clear: sinners cannot save themselves; our only hope is to confess Jesus Christ as Lord and walk forward in faith.

Look together at the expressions Paul uses in verse 13 to describe the kind of sinner he was. Explain that Paul is giving his personal testimony to show how great the Lord’s love and mercy are—how Jesus saved even someone like him, the “worst of sinners.” Paul says he was saved to be an example of the Lord’s great patience and mercy.

Paul uses his own life as an example to show the incredible love and mercy of the Lord. He openly admits that he had been a blasphemer, a persecutor, and a violent man. His misguided zeal for God had led him to persecute Christians, and he even played a leading role in the death of Stephen, the first Christian martyr (Acts 7:58–60).
Despite all this, the Lord—rich in mercy—came to Paul and changed his life. Paul makes it clear: it was only because of the Lord’s incredible patience and mercy that he was saved. He describes himself as the worst of sinners so that his story can be a model—a living example—of the Lord’s boundless grace for all who would believe.

▒ 인도자를 위한 해설 (Commentary for the Leader)
우리가 구원받은 것은 우리의 공로나 선행 때문이 아니에요. 하나님의 전적인 사랑과 오래 참으심과 긍휼히 여기심 때문이에요. 우리의 잘못된 모습을 꾸짖지 않으시고 오래 참으시며 변화되기를 기다리시는 하나님 사랑을 기억하길 바라요. 부족하고 연약한 모습에도 불구하고 여전히 우리를 받으시는 하나님의 사랑에 감사하며 우리는 그 사랑에 응답하는 삶을 살아야 해요. 우리가 죄인이었을 때도 여전히 사랑해 주신 하나님의 사랑이 우리를 구원하셨고 변화시키셨음을 기억하세요(롬 5:8). 그리고 나의 변화를 통해 주변 사람들이 사랑의 예수님을 알 수 있도록 예수님을 전하길 바라요.
We are not saved because of anything good we’ve done, but solely because of God’s love, patience, and mercy. God didn’t scold us for our wrongs—He patiently waited for us to change. We should always remember His love that embraces us despite our faults and weaknesses.
Romans 5:8 reminds us that God loved us even while we were still sinners—and it was that love that saved and transformed us.
Let’s live in gratitude for that grace, and share Jesus with others by showing them, through our changed lives, who He truly is.
“우리가 아직 죄인 되었을 때에 그리스도께서 우리를 위하여 죽으심으로 하나님께서 우리에 대한 자기의 사랑을 확증하셨느니라”(롬 5:8).

A cicada begins as a nymph and goes through a transformation to become the insect we recognize. Discuss how we, too, can grow and change in ways that are pleasing to God.
