4. 본문 이해 (Understanding the Scripture)
세상 나라의 흥망성쇠는 하나님 손에 달려 있어요. 바벨론이 침공하자 하나님을 의지하지 않고 강대국 애굽(이집트)을 의지한 유다는 결국 바벨론에 멸망당해요. 하지만 높은 이를 낮추시고 낮은 이를 높이시는 하나님은 이스라엘에 새로운 왕을 세우셔서 그분의 통치를 온 세상에 알리실 거예요.
The rise and fall of nations in the world are in God’s hands. When Babylon invaded, Judah, who relied on the superpower Egypt instead of God, was eventually destroyed by Babylon. However, God, who brings down the high and lifts up the low, will establish a new king in Israel to make His rule known to the whole world.
■ 인도자를 위한 본문 이해 (Understanding Scripture for the Leader)

Judah was in decline due to the Babylonian invasion. The king of Babylon captured King Jehoiachin of Judah and made Zedekiah king to serve Babylon. But Zedekiah broke his promise with Babylon and pursued a foreign policy of relying on Egypt. This was a departure from God’s will. When the king of Babylon, Nebuchadnezzar, found out, he deposed Zedekiah. And he killed his sons before his eyes and then plucked out Zedekiah’s eyes and bound him and took him away as a captive (2 Kings 25:7). Later, as Egypt was defeated by Babylon, Babylon became a great empire that no one could mess with. However, God said that even the glory of Babylon would not last forever. God is the one who establishes and deposes kings, and makes nations strong and makes them fall (1 Samuel 2:6-8). The passage uses a metaphor to express that He brings down tall trees and lifts up short trees, and withers green trees and makes dry trees flourish. God will break off a ‘tender twig’ from the top of the cedar and plant it on a high and lofty mountain. God promised that He would establish a new king from the line of David, like Jehoiachin or Zedekiah, in Zion, and this will be fully fulfilled in Jesus Christ. The rise and fall of worldly nations are in the hands of God, the eternal King and Lord of all. Therefore, the one whom Judah must truly rely on, the true King who is alive even now for us to rely on, is God alone.

‘The top of the cedar’ symbolizes the house of David, ‘the high branch’ symbolizes the new king who will come from the house of David, and ‘the tender twig’ is a metaphor for the humility of the Messiah who will be incarnated (verse 22). ‘The high mountain of Israel’ refers to Mount Zion (verse 23). God will establish a new king from the line of David in Zion. The new king promised by God will be a beautiful cedar that bears much fruit because he is faithful to the covenant. The kingship of this world is not perfect. God’s promise of restoration is something that will be fully fulfilled through Jesus Christ. The kingship and kingdom that God establishes through Jesus Christ will be eternal. No matter how strong a king is now, no matter how strong a nation is now, it is never eternal. The eternal things are God, God’s kingdom, and His people. God clearly showed this fact through Ezekiel.

‘들의 모든 나무’는 ‘세상 나라들’을 의미해요. 하나님은 높은 나무는 낮추시고 낮은 나무는 높이시며, 푸른 나무는 시들게 하시고 마른 나무는 무성하게 하시는 주권자예요. 하나님은 왕과 나라를 세우기도 하시고 폐하게도 하시는 분이에요. 모든 것이 전능하신 하나님 주권 아래 있어요. 하나님은 세상 나라들 앞에서 그분의 하나님 되심을 알리실 거예요. 우리는 하나님이 모든 힘과 권세의 근원이심을 기억해야 해요. 유다 왕과 백성은 멸망의 위기에서 진짜 힘을 가진 하나님을 의지하지 않고 힘 있어 보이는 다른 나라를 의지했어요. 위기 앞에서 우리가 할 수 있는 최선은 오직 하나님만 바라보고 그분만 힘 있게 의지하는 거예요. 위기를 만날 때마다 참된 도움이신 하나님을 바라보는 연습을 하길 바라요. 하나님을 먼저 떠올리고 의지하는 훈련은 인생에 어려움이 닥칠 때 다윗의 물맷돌 같은 놀라운 힘을 발휘할 거예요(삼상 17:37, 49).
‘All the trees of the field’ means ‘the nations of the world.’ God is the sovereign who brings down tall trees and lifts up short trees, who withers green trees and makes dry trees flourish. God is the one who establishes and deposes kings and nations. Everything is under the sovereignty of the almighty God. God will make His being known to the nations of the world. We must remember that God is the source of all power and authority. In the face of the crisis of destruction, the king and people of Judah did not rely on God, who had real power, but on other nations that seemed powerful. In the face of a crisis, the best we can do is to look only to God and rely on Him powerfully. I hope you practice looking to God, who is our true help, every time you face a crisis. The practice of thinking of and relying on God first will unleash amazing power like David’s slingstone when life’s difficulties strike (1 Samuel 17:37, 49).
“또 다윗이 이르되 여호와께서 나를 사자의 발톱과 곰의 발톱에서 건져내셨은즉 나를 이 블레셋 사람의 손에서도 건져내시리이다 사울이 다윗에게 이르되 가라 여호와께서 너와 함께 계시기를 원하노라”(삼상 17:37).

* 준비물: 8절 혹은 4절 흰색 종이, 그리기 도구, 동전, 셀로판테이프, 색 테이프(절연 테이프)
1. 큰 종이에 과녁을 그립니다. 과녁의 칸과 너비는 자녀들 나이에 맞게 조절합니다.
2. 과녁을 바닥에 붙이고, 조금 떨어진 곳에 동전을 던질 위치를 색 테이프로 선을 표시합니다.
3. 가위바위보로 순서를 정합니다.
4. 순서대로 선에 서서 동전을 던집니다(원 중앙에 가까이 던질수록 더 높은 점수를 받을 수 있습니다).

<Tossing Coins to Hit the Target>
* Preparations: White paper (size 8-cut or 4-cut), drawing tools, coins, cellophane tape, colored tape (electrical tape)
1. Draw a target on the large sheet of paper. Adjust the sections and width of the target according to the children’s ages.
2. Tape the target to the floor, and use colored tape to mark a line at a slight distance for where to throw the coins.
3. Play rock-paper-scissors to determine the order.
4. Standing at the line in order, throw the coins (the closer to the center, the higher the score).
Write numbers in each section of the target, add up the points from the sections where the coins land, and the player with the highest total wins the game. While focusing on throwing toward the center, share about what it means to focus on God in our daily lives. Then make a commitment to live a life focused on and dependent upon God.
