Timothy was the pastor of the church in Ephesus. Paul, who was imprisoned in Rome, wrote a letter to encourage Timothy, who was living with a pure conscience and a sincere faith. Timothy’s faith was inherited from his grandmother Lois and his mother Eunice. The greatest legacy that parents (or caregivers) can give to their children is faith.

Paul wrote this letter to Timothy, his beloved spiritual son, when he was imprisoned in Rome for the second time. 2 Timothy is Paul’s last letter, written when he knew that his death (around A.D. 67 or 68) was near (2 Tim. 4:6). Paul deeply longed to see Timothy. Timothy, though young, was serving as the pastor of the Ephesian church and was facing many difficulties due to problems within the congregation. Therefore, Paul encouraged and wholeheartedly supported him.
Paul praised Timothy’s faith that remained steadfast even amid the opposition of false teachers. Timothy was a man of God with sincere, unfeigned faith. While false teachers spread wrong doctrines for their own benefit and caused misunderstanding and confusion in the church, Timothy ministered faithfully with integrity. This sincere faith of Timothy had been passed down from his grandmother Lois and his mother Eunice.
Timothy’s father was a Greek, and his mother was a Jew (Acts 16:1). It is believed that when Paul preached the gospel in Lystra during his first missionary journey, Timothy’s entire family converted to the Christian faith. Timothy’s faith was based on the pure faith that he had seen and learned from his grandmother and mother. As a young man, Timothy assisted Paul in his missionary work (Acts 19:22) and grew strong in the truth of the gospel. Although young, Timothy became a leader of the Ephesian church and reminds us of the great importance of faith education within the home.
“For I am already being poured out like a drink offering, and the time of my departure has come.” (2 Tim. 4:6)
“Paul came to Derbe and then to Lystra, where a disciple named Timothy lived, whose mother was a Jewish believer and whose father was a Greek.” (Acts 16:1)
“He sent two of his helpers, Timothy and Erastus, to Macedonia, while he stayed in the province of Asia for a while longer.” (Acts 19:22)

Among Jews, maternal lineage was considered important. So even if the father was a Gentile, a child born of a Jewish mother was regarded as Jewish. That is why, although Timothy’s father was Greek, he is described as having inherited the faith of his Jewish grandmother and mother. From the time a mother held her child and nursed them, she taught about faith in God and the Law. As a result, the mother’s faith was passed on to the child. As Paul mentioned, Timothy’s sincere faith was grounded in the faith education given by his grandmother and mother. Through Timothy’s example, we see how crucial faith education within the family truly is. Because faith is both taught and learned through life itself, it is essential that parents live as role models of genuine faith before God.

In Jewish society, mothers were responsible for teaching their children about God and the Law while nursing and raising them. Therefore, the Jewish identity was traced through the mother’s lineage. Parental faith education is extremely important. The early Church Father Augustine once said,
“Before Satan teaches your children to sin, teach them to fear the Lord.”
This highlights the importance of faith education. Teaching children to revere God and to live a life of faith during their formative years is at the heart of Christian education. Thus, the primary responsibility for Christian education lies not with Sunday school teachers or pastors, but with parents. Parents are the first teachers of faith for their children. For faith to be passed down from generation to generation, parents must first strive to live as examples of faith themselves.
