5-1. 하나님 앞에 가장 큰 죄

이스라엘은 솔로몬이 죽은 후 남쪽 유다와 북쪽 이스라엘로 나뉘었어요. 유다와 베냐민 지파를 중심으로 이루어진 남쪽 유다는 솔로몬의 아들 르호보암이 다스리고, 르호보암에게서 돌아선 나머지 열 지파로 이루어진 북쪽 이스라엘은 여로보암이 다스렸어요. 여로보암은 자기 백성이 유다에 있는 예루살렘 성전으로 예배드리러 갈까 봐 노심초사했어요. 백성이 그곳에 자주 드나들다가 다윗 왕조에 대한 향수와 정통성에 동화되어 자기를 배신할까 봐 두려웠던 거예요. 솔로몬이 건축한 예루살렘 성전은 하나님 임재의 약속이 주어진 중요한 예배 장소이고, 그곳에는 모세가 시내산에서 받은 두 돌판이 들어 있는 언약궤도 있었어요. 여로보암은 자기 백성이 예루살렘 성전에 가지 않아도 될 묘안을 생각해 냈어요. 바로 북 이스라엘에 성소를 짓고 그곳에서 예배드리게 한다면 유다로 가지 않을 것이라는 생각이었지요. 그래서 그는 금송아지를 두 개를 만들어 벧엘과 단에 하나씩 두고, 그 금송아지가 이스라엘 백성을 애굽(이집트)에서 구해 낸 신이라고 속였어요. 북 이스라엘 백성은 더는 예루살렘에 있는 성전을 찾지 않고 여로보암이 만든 성소를 찾아가 금송아지를 섬기며 경배했어요. 여로보암이 금송아지 우상을 만들고 온 백성으로 우상을 숭배하게 한 일은 하나님께 큰 죄가 되었어요. 열왕기에는 북이스라엘 왕들을 언급할 때 “여로보암의 죄에서 떠나지 않았다.”라는 말이 관용구처럼 등장해요(왕상 13:33~34; 15:34; 16:26; 왕하 15:28 등). 여로보암은 자신의 왕위를 보전하기 위해 하나님을 예배하는 신앙을 정치적 도구로 전락시켰고, 그의 죄는 결국 북 이스라엘 왕조 전체에 치명적인 악영향을 끼치게 되었어요.

After Solomon’s death, Israel was divided into southern Judah and northern Israel. Southern Judah, including the tribes of Judah and Benjamin, was ruled by Solomon’s son Rehoboam, while northern Israel, consisting of the remaining ten tribes that had turned away from Rehoboam, was ruled by Jeroboam. Jeroboam was afraid that his people would go to the Jerusalem temple in Judah to worship. The Jerusalem Temple, built by Solomon, was an important place of worship where the promise of God’s presence was given. It contained the Ark of the Covenant and the two stone tablets that Moses received on Mount Sinai. Jeroboam came up with the idea that his people would not have to go to the temple in Jerusalem if he built a temple in northern Israel and had them worship there. Thus, he made two golden calves, one in Bethel and one in Dan, and pretended that the golden calf was the god who had brought the Israelites out of Egypt. The northern Israelites no longer went to the temple in Jerusalem but went to Jeroboam’s temples to worship the golden calf. Jeroboam’s making an idol of the golden calf and having all the people worship it became a great sin against God. In the book of Kings, the phrase “walking in the ways of Jeroboam and in his(the ruling king) sin” becomes an idiom when referring to the kings of northern Israel (1 Kings 13:33-34; 15:34; 16:26; 2 Kings 15:28, etc.). Jeroboam turned worshiping God into a political tool to preserve his throne, and his sin eventually had a devastating effect on the entire northern Israelite dynasty.

“여로보암이 이 일 후에도 그의 악한 길에서 떠나 돌이키지 아니하고 다시 일반 백성을 산당의 제사장으로 삼되 누구든지 자원하면 그 사람을 산당의 제사장으로 삼았으므로 이 일이 여로보암 집에 죄가 되어 그 집이 땅 위에서 끊어져 멸망하게 되니라”(왕상 13:33~34)

“33. Even after this, Jeroboam did not change his evil ways, but once more appointed priests for the high places from all sorts of people. Anyone who wanted to become a priest he consecrated for the high places.
34. This was the sin of the house of Jeroboam that led to its downfall and to its destruction from the face of the earth.“ (1 Kings 13:33-34, NIV)

“바아사가 여호와 보시기에 악을 행하되 여로보암의 길로 행하며 그가 이스라엘에게 범하게 한 그 죄 중에 행하였더라”(왕상 15:34)

“느밧의 아들 여로보암의 모든 길로 행하며 그가 이스라엘에게 죄를 범하게 한 그 죄 중에 행하여 그들의 헛된 것들로 이스라엘의 하나님 여호와를 노하시게 하였더라”(왕상 16:26)
