If We Become Proud as if We Were God

God, thank You for protecting us even in the sweltering heat. Please help us to gain strength through Your word and not lose our joy and gratitude as we become more tired and exhausted.

7 I am going to bring foreigners against you, the most ruthless of nations; they will draw their swords against your beauty and wisdom and pierce your shining splendor.
8 They will bring you down to the pit, and you will die a violent death in the heart of the seas.
9 Will you then say, “I am a god,” in the presence of those who kill you? You will be but a mortal, not a god, in the hands of those who slay you.
10 You will die the death of the uncircumcised at the hands of foreigners.I have spoken, declares the Sovereign LORD.'”

7 therefore, behold, I will bring foreigners upon you, the most ruthless of the nations; and they shall draw their swords against the beauty of your wisdom and defile your splendor.

9 Will you still say, ‘I am a god,’ in the presence of those who kill you, though you are but a man, and no god, in the hands of those who slay you?

4. 본문 이해 (Understanding the Scripture)
하나님은 교만한 두로 왕을 심판하실 거예요. 두로 왕은 지혜와 총명으로 큰 부를 얻고는 마음이 교만해졌어요. 심지어 자신이 하나님이라도 된 듯 우쭐댔어요. 하나님은 교만한 마음을 싫어하세요. 그래서 잔인한 사람들을 불러서 두로를 멸망시키시고 두로 왕이 한낱 사람에 불과함을 나타내실 거예요.
God will judge the proud king of Tyre. The king of Tyre gained great wealth through wisdom and understanding, and his heart became proud. He even boasted as if he had become God. God hates a proud heart. Therefore, He will call cruel people to destroy Tyre and reveal that the king of Tyre is nothing but a mere human.
■ 인도자를 위한 본문 이해 (Understanding Scripture for the Leader)
에스겔은 제사장 가문 사람으로, 바벨론에 포로로 잡혀갔습니다. 바벨론의 그발강에서 하나님 말씀이 임한 이후 그는 포로 공동체에 하나님 말씀을 전하기 시작했습니다(1:3). 에스겔은 이스라엘을 향한 하나님 말씀뿐 아니라 모압, 암몬, 에돔, 두로 등 주변 나라에 관한 하나님의 심판과 경고의 말씀도 전했습니다. 두로는 지중해 연안의 주요 항구 도시로, 과거에는 바다 쪽으로 나간 섬에 자리 잡았다가 육지와 연결되며 반도가 된 곳입니다. 당시 두로는 해상 무역을 통해 많은 부를 축적했습니다. 두로 왕은 자신이 지혜롭기 때문에 부귀영화를 누린다고 생각했습니다(28:3~5). 많은 재물로 인해 자신이 하나님이라도 된 듯이 우쭐댔습니다. 모든 것을 자신의 힘과 지혜로 이루어 냈다고 생각했기 때문입니다. 이렇듯 교만한 두로 왕을 향해 하나님은 엄중한 심판을 예고하십니다. 바벨론의 왕 느부갓네살을 통해 그를 멸망시키실 것입니다(26:7). 하나님이 더 힘센 민족과 강한 왕을 통해 그를 철저히 멸망시키시면, 그때 두로 왕은 자신이 한낱 사람에 불과함을 알 것입니다. 하나님은 교만한 사람을 대적하십니다. 교만은 패망의 선봉입니다(잠 16:18). 하나님 은혜를 잊어버리고 자신의 힘과 지혜를 자랑하는 것은 어리석습니다.
Ezekiel was from a priestly family and was taken captive to Babylon. After the word of God came to him by the Chebar River in Babylon, he began to deliver God’s word to the captive community (1:3). Ezekiel delivered not only God’s word for Israel but also God’s words of judgment and warning concerning neighboring nations like Moab, Ammon, Edom, and Tyre. Tyre was a major port city on the Mediterranean coast; in the past, it was located on an island extending out into the sea, but it later became a peninsula connected to the mainland. At that time, Tyre accumulated much wealth through maritime trade. The king of Tyre thought he enjoyed wealth and glory because he was wise (28:3~5). Because of his great wealth, he boasted as if he had become God. This was because he thought he had achieved everything by his own power and wisdom. Toward such a proud king of Tyre, God foretells a stern judgment. He will destroy him through Nebuchadnezzar, the king of Babylon (26:7). When God completely destroys him through a stronger nation and a mighty king, then the king of Tyre will realize that he is merely a human being. God opposes the proud. Pride goes before destruction (Proverbs 16:18). Forgetting God’s grace and boasting of one’s own strength and wisdom is foolish.

“The word of the LORD came expressly to Ezekiel the priest, the son of Buzi, in the land of the Chaldeans by the Chebar canal, and the hand of the LORD was upon him there” (Ezekiel 1:3).
“네가 다니엘보다 지혜로워서 은밀한 것을 깨닫지 못할 것이 없다 하고 네 지혜와 총명으로 재물을 얻었으며 금과 은을 곳간에 저축하였으며 네 큰 지혜와 네 무역으로 재물을 더하고 그 재물로 말미암아 네 마음이 교만하였도다”(겔 28:3~5).
“You consider yourself wiser than Daniel; there is no secret hidden from you; by your wisdom and your understanding you have amassed wealth for yourself, and have gathered gold and silver into your treasuries; by your great wisdom in trade you have increased your wealth, and your heart has become proud because of your wealth” (Ezekiel 28:3-5).
“주 여호와께서 이같이 말씀하셨느니라 내가 왕들 중의 왕 곧 바벨론의 느부갓네살왕으로 하여금 북쪽에서 말과 병거와 기병과 군대와 백성의 큰 무리를 거느리고 와서 두로를 치게 할 때에”(겔 26:7).
“For thus says the Lord GOD: Behold, I will bring upon Tyre from the north Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, king of kings, with horses and chariots, and with horsemen and a host of many soldiers” (Ezekiel 26:7).
“교만은 패망의 선봉이요 거만한 마음은 넘어짐의 앞잡이니라”(잠 16:18).
“Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall” (Proverbs 16:18).

Please explain that the king of Tyre, who gained much wealth through maritime trade, pretended to be God himself. Have them imagine the surrounding circumstances of why he considered himself like God and harbored a proud heart. Teach them that pride is the sin God hates the most, and have them find in the word what God does to the proud king of Tyre.

많은 재물은 사람을 교만하게 만듭니다. 두로 왕은 자신에게 지혜와 부와 영광을 주신 분이 하나님임을 잊고 교만했습니다. 모든 것을 스스로 이루어 냈다고 여겼으며, 자신의 소유가 영원하다고 생각했습니다. 자신이 누리는 부와 권력 때문에 그는 자기 자신을 하나님 자리에 두고 하나님 행세를 했습니다. 무슨 일이든 마음먹은 대로 할 수 있다고 생각했으며, 많은 이에게 강포를 일삼았습니다. 그러나 사람은 흙으로 지어진 존재입니다. 아무리 하나님인 체해도 사람은 결코 하나님이 될 수 없습니다. 하나님이 포악한 나라를 불러 두로를 치게 하시면, 두로 왕은 자신이 연약한 사람에 불과함을 알게 될 것입니다. 두로 왕은 결국 비참하게 죽어 사라질 무력한 존재입니다. 그의 죽음은 ‘할례받지 않은 자의 죽음'(10절)처럼 치욕스러울 것입니다. 하나님은 교만한 자를 반드시 심판하십니다. 하나님은 경고하신 대로 반드시 이루시는 분이심을 기억해야 합니다.
Great wealth makes a person proud. The king of Tyre forgot that God was the one who gave him wisdom, wealth, and glory, and became proud. He considered that he had achieved everything on his own, and thought his possessions would last forever. Because of the wealth and power he enjoyed, he put himself in God’s place and acted like God. He thought he could do whatever he set his mind to, and committed acts of violence against many. However, a human is a being made of dust. No matter how much one pretends to be God, a human can never become God. If God calls a ruthless nation to strike Tyre, the king of Tyre will come to know that he is nothing but a frail human being. The king of Tyre is ultimately a helpless being who will die miserably and disappear. His death will be as shameful as ‘the death of the uncircumcised’ (verse 10). God surely judges the proud. We must remember that God is the one who surely fulfills what He has warned.

우리가 누리는 모든 것은 하나님으로부터 온 것입니다. 우리가 누리는 부와 명예와 성공은 결코 내가 잘나서 얻은 것이 아닙니다. 하나님이 은혜로 주신 것입니다. 하나님이 재물을 주신 것은 가난한 사람에게 베풀라고 주신 것이며, 하나님이 명예를 주신 것은 하나님 나라를 위해 일하라고 주신 것입니다. 이를 기억한다면 교만을 멀리하고 겸손할 수 있습니다. 성공을 자랑하고 싶을 때 우리는 이렇게 고백해야 합니다. “하나님이 하셨습니다! 하나님이 주셨습니다!” 이는 하나님의 주권과 은혜를 고백하는 것입니다.
Everything we enjoy comes from God. The wealth, honor, and success we enjoy are never gained because we are great. They are given by God’s grace. God gave us wealth to give to the poor, and God gave us honor to work for God’s kingdom. If we remember this, we can distance ourselves from pride and be humble. When we want to boast about our success, we should confess like this: “God has done it! God has given it!” This is confessing God’s sovereignty and grace.
6. 감사하기 (Gratitude)
하나님께 감사드리고 싶은 일을 세 가지 정도 기록하게 한 후에 함께 나눕니다. 일상에서 경험한 크고 작은 감사나 예배 중에 생각난 감사를 나누어도 되고, 평범한 일상을 누리게 하시는 은혜에 대한 감사를 나누어도 됩니다. 감사를 나눔으로 하나님 은혜를 기억하고 하나님 중심의 삶을 훈련하게 됩니다.
Write down about three things you want to thank God for and share them together. You can share big and small thanks experienced in daily life, thanks that came to mind during worship, or thanks for the grace of enjoying an ordinary daily life. By sharing gratitude, we remember God’s grace and practice living a God-centered life.
7. 기도 (Prayer)
하나님, 저희가 누리는 모든 것이 하나님으로부터 온 것임을 기억하게 해 주세요. 세상에서 잘나가고 일이 잘 풀릴수록 교만을 경계하고 겸손을 선택하게 해 주세요. 항상 하나님의 영광을 위해 살아가는 저희가 되게 해 주세요.
God, please help us remember that everything we enjoy comes from You. As we become successful in the world and things go well, please help us to guard against pride and choose humility. Please help us to always live for the glory of God.

1. 아이들에게 젠가 놀이 방법을 설명해 줍니다(젠가는 나무 블록을 세 개씩 교차해 한 층씩 쌓아 올린 후, 한 사람씩 돌아가며 탑이 무너지지 않게 블록을 하나씩 빼는 놀이입니다).
2. 먼저 젠가를 함께 쌓으며 하나님 앞에서 높아진 우리의 모습은 없는지 나누어 봅니다.
3. 젠가를 높이 쌓은 후 한 사람씩 돌아가며 블록을 하나씩 뺍니다.
4. 젠가를 무너뜨린 사람은 벌칙을 수행하거나 심부름 등을 합니다.
보드게임 젠가는 어린아이들도 할 수 있는 놀이입니다. 젠가 탑을 쌓듯, 마음이 높아져 교만해지면 하나님을 잊어버리기 쉽다는 사실을 가르쳐 주십시오. 매사에 하나님 앞에서 교만해지지 않도록 스스로 돌아볼 수 있도록 지도해 주십시오.

* Materials: Jenga, penalties or errands to perform
1. Explain how to play the Jenga game to the children (Jenga is a game where wooden blocks are stacked one layer at a time by crossing them in threes, and then each person takes turns pulling out a block one by one without the tower collapsing).
2. First, as you stack the Jenga together, share if there are any aspects of us that have become elevated before God.
3. After stacking the Jenga high, each person takes turns pulling out a block one by one.
4. The person who knocks down the Jenga performs a penalty or runs an errand.
The board game Jenga is a game that even young children can play. Please teach them that just like stacking a Jenga tower, if our hearts become elevated and proud, it is easy to forget God. Please guide them to reflect on themselves so that they do not become proud before God in everything.
