□  NIV

16 “Son of man, take a stick of wood and write on it, ‘Belonging to Judah and the Israelites associated with him.’ Then take another stick of wood, and write on it, ‘Belonging to Joseph (that is, to Ephraim) and all the Israelites associated with him.’
17 Join them together into one stick so that they will become one in your hand.
18 “When your people ask you, ‘Won’t you tell us what you mean by this?’
19 say to them, ‘This is what the Sovereign LORD says: I am going to take the stick of Joseph—which is in Ephraim’s hand—and of the Israelite tribes associated with him, and join it to Judah’s stick. I will make them into a single stick of wood, and they will become one in my hand.’

□  ESV

16 “Son of man, take a stick and write on it, ‘For Judah, and the people of Israel associated with him’; then take another stick and write on it, ‘For Joseph (the stick of Ephraim) and all the house of Israel associated with him.’
17 And join them one to another into one stick, that they may become one in your hand.
18 And when your people say to you, ‘Will you not tell us what you mean by these?’
19 say to them, Thus says the Lord GOD: Behold, I am about to take the stick of Joseph (that is in the hand of Ephraim) and the tribes of Israel associated with him. And I will join with it the stick of Judah, and make them one stick, that they may be one in my hand.

(Understanding the Scripture)

After Israel was divided into North and South, they hated each other for a long time. God had the prophet Ezekiel perform an action of joining two sticks together, promising that Judah and Northern Israel would become one. Even relationships that seem impossible to unite through human strength and effort can become one in God.

(Understanding Scripture for the Leader)

This text is the ‘vision of the two sticks’ following the vision of the dry bones. After Solomon, Israel was divided into North and South. The Southern Kingdom of Judah was ruled by the two tribes of Judah and Benjamin, while the Northern Kingdom of Israel was ruled by ten tribes centered around the tribe of Ephraim. The Northern and Southern kingdoms became hostile and thoroughly divided. After Jeroboam, Northern Israel, which was deeply infected with idolatry, was destroyed by Assyria in 722 BC before Judah, and its capital, Samaria, lost its national identity and became a mixed race due to Assyria’s mixed policy. Judah also gradually became corrupt and was destroyed by Babylon in 586 BC, and Jerusalem, where the temple was located, was thoroughly destroyed. In a situation where Israel fell and the people were taken captive, no one could expect or hope that the tribes divided into North and South would become one. However, God showed complete restoration, not only political unity but also spiritual unity, through the vision of the two sticks. The word “they may become one in your hand” (verse 17) emphasizes that the subject of unity is not human effort or diplomatic methods, but ‘God’s sovereign guidance.’ If there is conflict or a feeling of alienation in the family, it is important to acknowledge that God is the only one who can resolve it.

(Sharing)

Like joining two sticks into one, who is the one who unites the divided nations of Judah and Northern Israel? (Verse 19)

Who is the one who joined the two sticks together? (Verse 19)

(Question Guide)

Have them think about what the symbol of two becoming one means. Focus on the fact that the sticks did not join themselves, but God’s mighty hand made them one. I hope you will instill the belief that relationships or situations that seem impossible to reconcile with our own strength can be completely restored when touched by God’s hand. Also, please guide them to have an attitude of faith to seek the Lord’s help first when difficulties arise in relationships.

(Commentary for the Leader)

The ‘vision of the two sticks’ is a scene that promises the complete restoration of the Northern and Southern dynasties, which had been divided into North and South for a long time and hated each other. What is noteworthy here is that the two sticks did not join themselves but ‘become one in God’s hand’ (verse 19). This clearly shows that the power to restore broken relationships and make them one lies not in human effort or diplomatic means, but only in God’s sovereignty and grace. Ezekiel merely obeyed God’s word and acted to join the two sticks together. The same is true for our families. When conflicts arise or hearts are divided among family members, we must seek God’s help first rather than trying to resolve them forcibly with our own strength. When God’s love and power surround us, wounds and walls are torn down, and unity occurs in relationships that seemed impossible to unite. Please tell your children that the basis for us to forgive and love lies in God’s hand that holds us, and take time to pray together for the unity of the family.

Talk about what God would want you to do when you have a fight and fall out with a friend or sibling.

(Question Guide)

Please let them know that even the small conflicts children experience are prayer topics that must be surrendered to God. Help them recall specific relationship difficulties, but guide them by focusing on the need for God’s help rather than criticizing. If parents confess first, “Mom and Dad also need God’s touch when we cannot become one,” children can comfortably open their hearts as well.

(Gratitude)

Write down about three things you want to thank God for and share them together. You can share big and small thanks experienced in daily life, thanks that came to mind during worship, or thanks for the grace of enjoying an ordinary daily life. By sharing gratitude, we remember God’s grace and practice living a God-centered life.

7. 기도 (Prayer)

God, we engrave in our hearts Your will for us to be one. Wherever we are and whatever we do, please help us to respect one another and strive to be one. Whenever our hearts are divided and we grow distant from each other, please help us seek God’s help.
