예루살렘 성벽이 다시 세워지는 것을 싫어하는 대적(원수)이 위협하며 방해했기에 유다 사람들은 한 손에는 무기를 들고 다른 손으로 일했어요. 그럼에도 52일 만에 성벽 공사를 마친 것은 하나님이 그들을 도우셨기 때문이에요. 대적과 주변 나라들은 이것이 하나님이 하신 일임을 알고 두려워했어요.
Because their enemies threatened to stop them from rebuilding the walls of Jerusalem, the people of Judah worked with weapons in their hands. But they finished the wall in 52 days because God helped them. Their enemies and the surrounding nations were afraid because they knew it was God’s work.

When Nehemiah and the Judahites tried to rebuild the wall, Sanballat, the governor of Samaria, and Tobiah the Ammonite were very unhappy (2:10). They thought that if Nehemiah rebuilt the walls of Jerusalem, it would hinder their expansion of power. Also, they felt that if the walls of Jerusalem were rebuilt, the function of the temple would be restored and the people of Judah would be united centered by the temple, and free from their influence. They tried to intimidate Nehemiah with threats, political conspiracy theories, spreading rumors, and even mobilizing the nobles and priests of Judah to sabotage the construction of the walls of Jerusalem. But Nehemiah, who was held strong in God’s hand, was not shaken. Rather, the people of Judah became more united around Nehemiah (4:14) and rebuilt the wall. As a result, the wall was completed 52 days after the work began. As the people of Judah and Nehemiah rejoiced together, the enemies and surrounding nations who opposed the work had mixed reactions. Because they could clearly see that God was at work in their midst, the enemy despaired and feared. Those who participate in God’s work by faith genuinely rejoice in victory after a good fight, but those who are looking out for their own interests and do not consider God’s work will see God’s work as a disaster.
“호론 사람 산발랏과 종이었던 암몬 사람 도비야가 이스라엘 자손을 흥왕하게 하려는 사람이 왔다 함을 듣고 심히 근심하더라”(느 2:10).
10. When Sanballat the Horonite and Tobiah the Ammonite official heard about this, they were very much disturbed that someone had come to promote the welfare of the Israelites. (Nehemiah 2:10, NIV)
“내가 돌아본 후에 일어나서 귀족들과 민장들과 남은 백성에게 말하기를 너희는 그들을 두려워하지 말고 지극히 크시고 두려우신 주를 기억하고 너희 형제와 자녀와 아내와 집을 위하여 싸우라 하였느니라”(느 4:14).

Rebuilding the walls of Jerusalem was the beginning of restoration and a new hope for the people of Judah, but their enemies and neighboring nations didn’t like the idea because they feared it would reduce their wealth and influence. They didn’t believe in God and put their own interests ahead of God’s work.

호론 사람 산발랏은 유다 지역 북쪽에 있는 사마리아 지방을 다스리는 총독이었어요. 도비야는 암몬 사람으로 유다 민족이 회복되는 것을 좋아하지 않았어요. 게셈 사람은 유다 남쪽 에돔 땅에 사는 사람으로, 그 역시 유다 민족이 회복되면 자신에게 이익이 되지 않기에 반기지 않았어요(2:19). 그럼에도 하나님은 다시 유다 민족에게 기회를 주시며 그들의 회복을 도우셨어요. 하나님을 경외하지 않는 사람들은 하나님의 역사에 관심을 두지 않고 자기 이익만 더 중요하게 여겼어요.
Sanballat, a Horonite, was the governor of Samaria, which is north of the region of Judah; Tobiah, an Ammonite, did not like the restoration of Judah; and Geshem, a man who lived in the land of Edom, south of Judah, also did not like the restoration of Judah because it would not benefit him (2:19). Nevertheless, God gave Judah another chance and helped them recover. People who didn’t fear God didn’t care about what God was doing, but were more concerned about their own interests.

믿음으로 행하는 일들이 때로는 믿지 않는 사람들에게 비난받고 무시받을 수 있어요. 그러나 하나님의 사람에게 중요한 것은 하나님의 시선과 평가지, 사람들이 시선과 평가가 아니에요. 믿음으로 결단한 일이 하나님과의 약속에 근거하고 또 하나님의 인도하심임을 확신한다면 어떤 방해가 있더라도 끝까지 믿음의 길을 걸어갈 수 있어요. 방해나 장애물을 만나더라도 좌절하거나 포기하지 말고 오직 하나님께 집중해 믿음이 자라는 기회로 삼길 바라요. 사람들의 무시와 비난 속에서도 하나님께 온전히 집중하는 믿음을 선택할 때 하나님이 우리를 도우세요. 우리 가족이 하나님의 일을 잘 감당하도록 서로 응원해 주세요.
The things we do in faith may sometimes be criticized and dismissed by unbelievers, but what matters to God’s people is what God sees and approves of, not what others see and approve of. If we are confident that what we decide to do in faith is based on God’s promises and led by God, we can stay on the path of faith no matter what obstacles we encounter. Let’s not get discouraged or give up when we encounter obstacles, but instead, focus on God and use them as opportunities to grow in faith. God helps us as we choose to focus our faith on God, even in the face of dismissal and criticism. Let’s support each other as we do God’s work.

God, help our family to be partners in Your good work, not opponents. Give us the strength to follow through on our commitments despite difficulties and obstacles, so that we may be the family always filled with the joy of heaven.

*Preparations: cushions or pillows (3-4), colored tape, big papers, colored pencils, paper plates, candy, flour, destination markers, timer, and gifts.
1. 거실 곳곳에 장애물을 설치합니다.
Set up obstacles around the living room.
