사울왕은 전쟁터에서 비참한 최후를 맞았어요. 그는 하나님께 죄를 짓고, 하나님 말씀에 순종하지 않았으며, 문제가 생겼을 때 무당(신접한 자)에게 물었어요. 사울의 죽음은 하나님을 무시한 죄에 대한 심판이었어요. 하나님은 그분 말씀에 순종하는 다윗을 사울 대신 이스라엘의 왕으로 세우셨어요.
King Saul met a miserable end on the battlefield. He sinned against God, did not obey God’s word, and when a problem arose, he asked a shaman (medium). Saul’s death was a judgment for the sin of ignoring God. God raised up David, who obeyed His word, as the king of Israel in place of Saul.

The death of King Saul and his sons mentioned in the text is based on 1 Samuel 31:1-6. Saul was the first king of Israel. He was the son of Kish from the tribe of Benjamin, and initially, he was a humble man who lowered himself (1 Samuel 9:21). However, after becoming king, he lost his fear of God and did not obey God’s word (1 Samuel 15:22-23). Furthermore, Saul, overcome with fear in the face of the Philistine attack, did not ask God but sought out a medium (1 Samuel 28:6-7) and even committed the abomination of calling up the dead Samuel. Ultimately, Saul met his death in the Battle of Gilboa against the Philistines, and his sons were also killed in that battle. The chronicler clearly states that Saul’s death was the result of his sin against God. Because Saul inquired of a medium and did not inquire of God, God put him to death and turned the kingdom over to David the son of Jesse. Victory or defeat in war, and life and death, all rest in God’s hands. Saul’s death clearly shows that a person of God must live obeying God’s word and always inquiring of God.

Saul died fighting the Philistines in the Battle of Mount Gilboa. His three sons, Jonathan, Abinadab, and Malchi-shua, were also killed together in that battle. The death of Saul and his sons was not a simple defeat in war but a judgment sent by God. Saul made light of God’s word and did not obey it to the end. Also, in the face of a life crisis, he did not seek God who had established him as king, but sought out a medium. This shows how far Saul had drifted from God by relying on an object God hates for his own safety. Even a king personally appointed by God can be abandoned if he does not live a God-centered life. At the important crossroads of life, the one we must seek first is God. God abandoned the disobedient Saul and raised up the obedient David as the king of Israel.

Have them reflect on what their very first reaction is when a problem arises. In moments like exams, relationship conflicts, career worries, health problems, or fear after making a mistake, some people seek friends or parents first, some rely on the internet or their own experiences, and some cling to their own thoughts and feelings. In the future, it will become more common for children to search for their problems on AI or confide in friends. However, in such moments, please help them reflect on who they truly rely on in the face of a crisis, and to develop a habit of faith to first ask God in prayer and remember God’s word. God rejected Saul, who rejected God’s word (1 Samuel 15:22-23). Therefore, please help them engrave in their hearts the fact that holding onto and prioritizing God’s word first is the most important thing in life.

Write down about three things you want to thank God for and share them together. You can share big and small thanks experienced in daily life, thanks that came to mind during worship, or thanks for the grace of enjoying an ordinary daily life. By sharing gratitude, we remember God’s grace and practice living a God-centered life.
7. 기도 (Prayer)
하나님, 죄에는 심판이 따른다는 것을 기억합니다. 사울왕의 불순종과 실패를 따르지 않고, 하나님 말씀을 생명처럼 여기며 순종하길 원해요. 어려움을 만날 때 문제의 해결자 되시는 하나님 앞에 진실한 마음으로 나아가게 해 주세요.
God, we remember that judgment follows sin. We do not want to follow King Saul’s disobedience and failure, but to consider God’s word as life and obey it. When we encounter difficulties, please let us go before God, the problem solver, with a sincere heart.

* Materials: Drawing paper (for the number of family members), permanent marker, pencil, scissors, coloring tools, etc.
1. Place your hand on the drawing paper and trace it with a pencil with your fingers spread wide.
2. Trace over the penciled hand shape again with a permanent marker.
3. Cut out the hand shape with scissors along the permanent marker line.
4. The following on each finger.

5. Read the words written on the fingers aloud, and resolve to ask God first.
