8 When the Philistines heard that David had been anointed king over all Israel, they went up in full force to search for him, but David heard about it and went out to meet them.
9 Now the Philistines had come and raided the Valley of Rephaim;
10 so David inquired of God: “Shall I go and attack the Philistines? Will you deliver them into my hands?”
The LORD answered him, “Go, I will deliver them into your hands.”
11 So David and his men went up to Baal Perazim, and there he defeated them. He said, “As waters break out, God has broken out against my enemies by my hand.” So that place was called Baal Perazim.

11 And he went up to Baal-perazim, and David struck them down there. And David said, “God has broken through my enemies by my hand, like a bursting flood.” Therefore the name of that place is called Baal-perazim.

다윗이 왕이 되자 블레셋이 쳐들어왔어요. 위기 앞에서 다윗은 먼저 하나님을 의지하며 기도했어요. 하나님은 블레셋을 다윗의 손에 넘겨주겠다고 약속하셨고, 다윗은 담대히 나아가 크게 승리했어요. 하나님께 묻고 순종하는 다윗을 하나님이 도와주신 거예요. 이것이 사울과 다윗의 분명한 차이예요.
When David became king, the Philistines invaded. In the face of crisis, David first relied on God and prayed. God promised to deliver the Philistines into David’s hand, and David went out boldly and won a great victory. God helped David, who asked and obeyed God. This is the clear difference between Saul and David.

Before becoming king, David had stayed in the Philistine region while fleeing from Saul (1 Samuel 27:1-2, 12). The Philistines were a nation that threatened Israel at the time, possessing more advanced iron weapons and an organized army than Israel. When David became king, the Philistines came to capture him, and before David could even react, their army reached the Valley of Rephaim near Jerusalem. It was a very critical situation. However, in this situation, David first went before God. The expression ‘inquire,’ which frequently appears in Chronicles, can also be translated as ‘seek,’ showing a faith that wholeheartedly relies on God. David knew that the one who protected him during his days as a fugitive was God. Also, knowing well that the outcome of war rested in God’s hands, he asked God. “God, shall I go and fight against the Philistines?” This is the difference between Saul and David. In an emergency, Saul sought out a medium, but David sincerely relied only on God. In response to David’s inquiry, God permitted the war with the Philistines, and with God’s help, David and his army heavily defeated the Philistines. Afterward, David called the place ‘Baal-perazim.’ This means ‘the Lord who breaks through,’ and it is a confession of victory that God broke through the Philistine army as water breaks out. Even in fearful and urgent situations where you feel like you might die, look only to God and rely on Him. You will experience the helping God being with you.

“But David thought in his heart, ‘Now I shall perish one day by the hand of Saul. There is nothing better for me than that I should escape to the land of the Philistines. Then Saul will despair of seeking me any longer within the borders of Israel, and I shall escape out of his hand.’ So David arose and went over, he and the six hundred men who were with him, to Achish the son of Maoch, king of Gath.” (1 Samuel 27:1-2)

First, explain how strong and threatening the Philistine army was at the time. The fact that they reached the Valley of Rephaim near Jerusalem shows that it was a very serious crisis situation. The Philistines, equipped with iron weapons and a well-organized army, were a very fearful and threatening presence to the people of Israel. David had once lived like a fugitive in the Philistine region, and knowing this, the Philistines despised him and attacked upon hearing the news that he had become king of Israel. However, David, who feared God, went before God first when he met a crisis. Because he knew that God is the sovereign of war and that victory or defeat rests in God’s hands. ‘To inquire of God’ means to pray to God and seek His will. When David inquired of God, God gave him the assurance of victory. David fought the Philistines believing and relying on God’s promise, and finally won a great victory with God’s help. ‘Baal-perazim’ means ‘the Lord who scatters’ or ‘the Lord who breaks through,’ and David gave the glory of victory to God.

We don’t always have only peaceful things happen to us. The reason we do not need to be afraid even when we meet difficult and hard situations is because God, the Lord of the whole world, is my God. There is nothing God cannot do, and nothing He does not know. When we confess that God is my God, we can move forward with faith without wavering even in the face of an absolute crisis. Try telling God, who is greater than any situation, about your specific circumstances and ask for help. For example, you can share stories like, ‘I am facing an important decision, what choice should I make?’, ‘I have an important meeting, what should I prepare to say?’, ‘I am not getting along with a friend, how can we become close again?’ and pray together. Please encourage one another not to stop asking God in prayer even in crises big and small. The more urgent the situation, the more swiftly God responds, opens a way of escape, and helps you overcome it completely. You will experience the God of ‘Baal-perazim’ who breaks through and scatters the big and small problems and crises placed before us.
6. 감사하기 (Gratitude)

God, we engrave in our hearts that coming first before God, the sovereign of all things, is the path to victory. We want to pray to God without panicking in moments of emergency. By relying on the Lord of power and obeying the word, please let us experience amazing victory.

1. Try making a four-cut storyboard of the word meditated on today. First, discuss together what content to express in pictures.
2. Family members suggest the content for one cut each, and sketch it with a pencil.
3. Color the sketched drawing.
4. Write a story or speech bubble that fits each picture.
5. Family members take turns telling the story of the contents of the four-cut storyboard.
A storyboard is a method of conveying a story through pictures. If a storyboard is unfamiliar, it is okay to express it like a comic. You may include more pictures and content than four cuts to share richly. It would be good if the fact that we must first stop, ask God, and pray in the face of a crisis is well emphasized.
